ABSTRACT-

Lately, the State Indonesia experienced increased development in various sectors,


transport becomes one of the need for progress for the community. Improving transport must be
accompanied by good management to maintain the continuity and safety of traffic. The road is a
land transport infrastructure that is essential in economic relations and facilitate the activities of
other social activities. Road as an infrastructure has an important function in supporting the
development and economy.

Disruption in the functioning of the road will disrupt transportation and distribution of
goods and services, and will affect the economic sector. The road is a framework plan of a city,
an important part of the progress of the city. But if there is damage to the road will result in not
only the obstruction of other economic and social activities but it can happen accidents for road
users. This study aims to determine the types of road damage, the causes and solutions to
overcome them. The method used is a field research with the results of a survey of primary data.

According to Lewis (1969), the type and extent of damage pavement for highway there
are 19 damage is alligator cracking, bleeding, block cracking, bums and sags, corrugation,
depression, edge cracking, joint reflection, lane/shoulder drop off, longitudinal and transverse
cracking, patching and utility cut patching, polished aggregate, potholes, railroad crossings,
rutting, shoving, slippage cracking, swell, weathering and ravelling. Factors that cause damage in
general is the increase of the volume of traffic, the drainage system is not good, the material
properties of pavement construction unfavorable, climate, soil conditions are unstable, planning
pavement very thin, the implementation process of work that was not relevant to the
specifications cheated by unscrupulous irresponsible. So to improve the road can be done by
various measures such as the crack sealing, surface treatment, patching.
