Goal:

Producing a concrete like - polymer using plastic as the base.

Purpose:
The purpose of the Project is to address the over population phenomenon in way which
impact positively the environment. Now, it is no secret that as the population increase so
does the plastic waste and the production of concrete, both which in some stage of their
production or life cycle have a negative impact n the planet. So by using plastic wastes to
produce concrete, Im destroying to environmental problems at the same time and
producing an alternative cheap solution for new families to construct. Now, this idea
exists long ago, so my Project will be focused on producing a method a non hydrated
concrete like polymer, preferably using sustainable materials which are found on my local
environment.

Why?
I developed this idea, by using my prior knowledge in the subject. When I was in grade six,
I performed the EXHIBITION on the plastic waste topic, this helped me to understand the
major environmental impact of plastic waste. Last year, I also worked on a project for a
science fair and whilst searching for possible projects, I discovered an initiative in Bogota,
where they use plastic wastes to produce walls and furniture. Also because of personal
interest, I learned of the environmental impact so the production of concrete and
understood that most of plastics are not recycled, and that recycling processes are often
very expensive. I also learned, because of many things, including MUN, that the over the
past years, both global warming and polluting (marine/plastic) have increased with the
population.

Global context and justification

Scientific and technical innovation The product would be focused in producing a
concrete like polymer using plastic as the base, this required scientific and technical
exploration and skills (like experimentation). In addition to this, the purposely is based on
addressing both environmental and social issues by using science as the application
method to produce a sustainable development of the humankind in both small and large
scales.

Inquiry Questions
1.What are the processes and properties of concrete? (consider mostly the environmental
impact of the processes, and the properties that could improve, to achieve a better
technical performance).

2. What are the processes and properties of plastic? (consider mostly the environmental
impact of the processes, and outline the properties which make a certain plastic similar to
concrete in the technical aspects).

3.How could plastic be altered chemically/physically to acquire similar properties to the

ones presented by concrete, in a way which isnt harmful for the environment?
