Preface
Successful Milking

1.5 Successful Milking

Prerequisites for successful milking:
D A properly designed and adjusted milking installation.
The milking vacuum, the pulsation and automatic cluster removal must be
set correctly to suit the animals.
Regular checks and adjustments to meet any herd changes will also ensure
successful milking.
D A cluster suitable for the animal.
D A properly positioned cluster with tube guide and cluster removal.
Good cluster positioning prevents negative torsional and leverage forces
from being exerted on the udder. Poor adhesion, stripping difficulties and
udder problems can be prevented in this way!
Tube guide arms or automatic stripping units make it easier to position the
cluster, follow the movements of the cow and ensure milking success. With
these systems, the cost of achieving an optimum position for the cluster is
low. They make cluster application easier and reduce physical stress on the
operator!
It is generally recommended that the counter-balance hose support be used
during milking!
When laying the tubes keep them as short as possible and avoid
unnecessary sagging.
D A timely maintenance and cleaning of the milking installation.
Regular thorough cleaning and disinfection of the milking installation will
help to improve the health of the animals, the quality of the milk and therefore
milking results.
D When replacing parts, only use original spare parts.
D Setting recommendations must be checked regularly and adjusted if
necessary. They do not apply in connection with products by other
manufacturers.
D Separating of non-saleable milk.
The milk from sick and newly milking animals must be collected separately.
Recommendation: use separate clusters and containers to collect the milk
or a separate dump line.
D Milking routine
Conscientious application of the milking routine has an effect on the milking
result.

Attention!
Always avoid milking without milk flow (blind milking) because it will
very quickly have a negative effect on teat condition and udder
health!

Preface
Successful Milking

Milking routine
1 Visual inspection
Monitor the animals as they enter the milking parlour. Identify any
treatment, injury or udder infection.

2 Clean udder and teats

Remove coarse dirt.

3 Preliminary milking
Check the milk to see if it is saleable and monitor udder health.
Start the stimulation process.
Recommended: Use automatic stimulation.

4 Wipe / dry the teats

For at least 60 seconds before the cluster is applied, with manual
stimulation.

5 Apply and position the cluster

Avoid air inclusion and slipping of the milking cups.

Recommended: Use positioning aids.

6 Check thoroughness of milking

Only when the milk flow has dropped off significantly may there be any
intervention in the milking process (manual or automatic).

7 Remove cluster
No blind milking. Shut the vacuum off first, then remove the cluster.

Recommended: Use automatic cluster removal.

8 Dip teats
Directly after removing the cluster dip each teat to at least 3/4 of its length.

9 Clean the milking place

Disinfect the cluster. Clean the place where the animals stand once they
have left the milking place.
Recommended: Use automatic intermediate cluster
disinfecting.
10 Stress-free animal changeover
Let the animals enter the milking parlour calmly and without any stress.

Functional description

3.4 Functional description

In SwingOver mode the animals are milked alternately in rows. A distinction is

made here between the active side and the passive side of the milking parlour.

Once milking standby has been established, the right-hand side of the milking
parlour is active.
With DemaTron it is possible to set the active side of the milking parlour.
Setting in DPSetup

being changed over.
C

C swing over arm / remote start

once one animal has been milked the swing over arm moves the cluster
over to the opposite milking place and the active side changes.
When the swing-over takes place the integrated remote start (magnetic
switch on Metatron and a magnet in the swing over arm) starts off the
milking process.
(Metatron display: arrow points to the active side)

Automatic change of side Metatron P21

In conjunction with an automatic animal identification system, under certain

conditions the side can change automatically.

Automatic change of side ... Requirement

Once milking standby has D New animals started to be let in on the
been established left-hand side of the milking parlour.
(in rows) left-hand side = active side
After the end of milking D When a new row is let in (yellow indicator
(in rows) light flashes slowly).
This ensures that milking places on the
active side are switched over even if no
animal has been identified at them.
D The passive side has been filled during
the milking process.
At all places where there has D When the cluster is applied to the first
been no milking animal in a new row
At the milking place where D The arm swings over
there has been no milking (remote start activated)

Also read the section on "Safety".

Special hazards during installation:

Warning!
Risk of falling!
During installation work there is a risk of falling, e.g. from a ladder.
Only use equipment which ensures a secure standing position and
adequate safety.
D Injury can be caused by the electrical current from live cable ends and
components.
D Lines which are not laid properly (e.g. bending radius too small) can cause
scorching and electrical fires.
If the bending radius is too small, it should be removed.
D Electrostatic processes can cause damage to electronic components.
Attention!
Only touch the edge of the printed circuit board and avoid static
caused for example by clothing.

D Before working on electrical installations or equipment (components,

housings, etc.), they are to be disconnected from the mains.
Any on/off or emergency stop switches are to be fitted with a lock to
immobilize them in the open position and a warning sign is to be put up.
D Welding work constitutes a fire hazard.
D Components which have been incorrectly set down or which have not been
fastened properly may fall off or twist.

Safety instructions for installation

D Parts loosely placed on top of each other can slip and fall off.
D Components with exposed sharp edges represent a source of injury.
D The central pipelines may be damaged by misuse (e.g. by standing on them
during installation).
Never place any unusual weight on the pipelines.
D Serious injury to personnel or damage to property can be caused if the
incorrect torque is applied when tightening screws.

Working with stainless steel

Attention!
Before metal-cutting work:
- Protect any sensitive surfaces, e.g. from flying sparks.
After metal-cutting work:
- Deburr the edges that have been cut.
- Thoroughly remove all chips and impurities!

Attention!
Risk of corrosion!
Do not use tools to work on stainless steel which were used to work on
steel before!
To work on stainless steel only use special tools (saw blades, cutting
wheels etc.)!

Attention!
Always avoid flying sparks on special steel
surfaces or other sensitive components!
Metal dust on stainless steel surfaces can lead to
corrosion!

Attention!
All screws and nuts made of stainless steel are to
be greased thoroughly to prevent them from
seizing during tightening!

Maintenance
Inspections and preventive maintenance

D Electrostatic processes can cause damage to electronic components.

Note!
Only touch the edge of the printed circuit board and avoid static
caused for example by clothing.

D Incorrectly wired connections can destroy electrical/electronic components.

D There is a risk of the head and hands being knocked or trapped when the
arm swings over.

On completion of the maintenance work, check that:

D Any screwed connections that were loosened earlier have been tightened.
D Any tools, materials and other equipment used have been taken back out
of the working area.
D The working area has been cleaned.
(possibly to remove any fluids or similar substances that came out of the
machine)
D Operation has been checked after maintenance work has been completed
or parts replaced. Produce a full test report if necessary.

9.3 Inspections and preventive maintenance

Carry out regular checks on electrical equipment:

D Re-tighten any loose connections
D Replace damaged lines or cables immediately
D Close off any cable openings that are not being used
As far as animal health and milking results are concerned, it is extremely
important for the milking installation to be inspected and settings checked on
a regular basis.
Keep records of checks in a safe place so that they can be inspected at any time.
Settings and milking equipment are always to be kept in line with the
characteristics of the current herd (milk yield, udder shape etc.). Here are some
examples:
D Vacuum level:
Is the vacuum level set correctly and is the operating vacuum being
displayed correctly by the vacuum gauge? Would it be possible to set the
operating vacuum at a lower level (gentler milking)?
D Automatic cluster removal:
Is it necessary to adjust the settings to suit the milking properties of the
current herd? Milking without milk flow (blind milking) will very quickly have
an adverse effect on teat condition and udder health and therefore really
must be avoided!
