PRE-LISTENING

When you hear the word ‘riddle,’ [post It is a play with words.
visuals] what comes to your mind?

Right. So, could anyone share some [Students will share some riddles in
riddles in class? class]

Okay. As you hear the riddles, what do The answers are not directly stated.
you notice?

Yes, they are not directly stated. You

answered each riddle by drawing
inferences. Now, what is this drawing
inferences that I’m talking about?
Drawing inferences is a big term for
concluding and judging. It is where we
use our background knowledge in
explaining and describing specific
information about things. [Post visuals
on drawing inferences.]

WHILE LISTENING

Listeners make guesses based on what Yes, ma’am.

they hear and what they already know.
Now, as we go on to the lesson, I have
here a riddle for you to answer. All you
have to do is to infer what is being
described by the clues as you listen. It
might be one riddle but you have to
answer each statement separately in
order to come up with the main answer.
Understood?

Okay. Let’s start. Listen carefully.

“First, think of a person who lives in

disguise,
Who deals in secrets and tells naught but
lies.
Next, tell me what’s always the last thing
to mend,
The middle of middle and the end of end.
And finally, give me the sound often
heard
During the search for a hard-to-find
word.
Now, string them together, and answer
me this,
Which creature you would be unwilling to
kiss?”

I know it will be hard for you to answer it

all at one so, let’s have it by statements.

“First, think of a person who lives in

disguise,
Who deals in secrets and tells naught but
lies.”

What do you think it is? Ma’am, an impersonator?

How did you say so? Because it lives in disguise.

Good guess, but incorrect. Who else got Ma’am, is that a spy?
some ideas there?

A spy? Why? Because spies move undercover and

disguised themselves to deceive the
enemies.

That was a great answer. You’re right.

Now, let’s move on the next one.

“Next, tell me what’s always the last Ma’am, the question is logic. The answer
thing to mend, is “d.”
The middle of middle and the end of
end.”

Why did you say so? The last thing to mend is “d,” the middle
of middle is “d” and the end of end is “d.”
That’s the common letter of those words.

That’s a great observation. Correct. Next

is:

“And finally, give me the sound often Ma’am, is that “uhm?”

heard
During the search for a hard-to-find
word.”

Why? Because it’s the sound we usually say

when we’re thinking of what to say next.

Oh, I’m sorry. Your explanation is correct The Japanese use “anno…” or “etto…”
but the answer is wrong. It is something
else so, who could guess?

Sorry, neither of the two. Another? Ma’am I heard some people say “er.”
You got it! Now, let’s move on the last
one.

“Now, string them together, and answer Ma’am, you mean that if we combined
me this, them together, we will get the answer?
Which creature you would be unwilling to
kiss?”

Yes, you could. Spy + d + er. Ma’am, clues!

Use your phonetics. /spi/ + /d/ + /er/… Ah! SPIDER!

Great! You got it right!

POST LISTENING

So, did you enjoy our small activity? Yes, ma’am.

Now that you’re already familiar with [The students will now create their own
drawing inferences, I wanted to you to riddles and present it to the whole class
make you own riddles and each will afterwards.]
present his/her work in front and let the
whole class guess what you have done.

ASSIGNMENT

Before we end the class, please do jot

down your assignment. We’re still not
through yet with drawing inferences. I
would like you to prepare two to three
sentences with unfamiliar words.

So, that’s all for today. Good day, Goodbye and thank you ma’am.
