Charge stratification

- A stratified charge engine is a type of internal

combustion engine, in which the fuel is injected into
cylinder just before ignition.

- This allows for Higher compression ratios without

knock & leaner A/F ratio than conventional engines.

- Main aim of charge stratification is better ignition and

hence better combustion of charge, i.e. air-fuel mixture.
HCCI Homogenous Charge
Compression Ignition
-In HCCI, A/F ratio is kept very close to
stochiometric
-A well mixed fuel and oxidizer are compressed
to point of auto ignition
-It has the characteristics of combustion of
both spark ignition (petrol) and compression
ignition(diesel) engines.
-Ignition occurs at several places at a time,
mixture burns almost spontaneously, without
Initiation or flame propagation.
- Stable combustion is achieved

Higher efficiency, Lower

emissions,..
Higher peak pressures, Difficult
to control, High heat release
rates,..
