Art Studies 1 Final Project

Second Semester AY 2016-2017

Cultural Mapping

Cultural mapping makes the local culture and history more visible so it can be utilized n
new productive ways that enable us to discover and respect the community better.
Make a map of a particular site. Identify resources based on the cultural mapping checklist
prepared by Felice Sta. Maria. In the map, note down each of the resource and provide
pertinent information. Cite sources properly. Avoid Wikipedia entries. Consider gathering
data through interviews and site visits.
Reflect on the following:
What makes a place?
What makes it important? What values (aesthetic, scientific, historical, socio-
cultural, etc.) do you ascribe to places?
How does the presence of cultural resources affect the perception of places? How
are these resources accessed by the community? How do they engage with it?
Also think about groups who may not have access to it
In what ways do these resources help define (or not define) the identity of a place?
In making the map, think about your target audience. Who will it benefit from it?
What can insights can they possibly take away from your map?
