Stack up the periodic table with these squishy toy blocks! Each block face features the atomic number and
symbol of a different element. The pattern includes instructions for plain blocks and color charts for the
elements Hydrogen (1) through Neodymium (60). The color on these blocks was worked in duplicate stitch for
texture; however, the pattern can easily be adjusted for stranded color knitting by working each face separately.

Materials
One set of 5 size 8 (5.0 mm) double pointed
needles
Stitch marker
Tapestry needle

Gauge
17 stitches and 25 rows = 4x 4

Cube (Finished size is 4 x 4 x 4)

Cast on 17 stitches.
Base: Starting with a knit row, work in plain stockinette for 24 rows, slipping the first stitch on every row to
create a neat edging. Slip the first stitch knitwise on every knit row, and purlwise on every purl row.
Row 25 (knit row): Slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 16, pick up 15 stitches along the left edge of your square, pick up
16 stitches along the bottom and pick up 16 stitches along the right side. Move the last stitch of the first needle
to the second needle, so you have 16 stitches per needle, 64 stitches total. Place a marker at the beginning of
the round.
Sides: Work plain stockinette in the round for 25 rows. On every other row, slip the first stitch on each needle
purlwise, to create an edge that will easily fold outward.
Row 26: Slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 16, bind off the 47 remaining stitches.
Top: Work in plain stockinette for 25 rows, slipping the first stitch on every row.
Bind off, leaving a long tail for seaming. Apply duplicate stitch to faces according to charts.
Stuff cube and seam.

Colorwork
The color border in each chart is 15 stitches wide and 23 rows high. If you prefer to work the cube faces using
stranded color knitting, you can work each cube face separately then seam them together. Each cube face
should consist of 17 stitches and 25 rows.
