Inspiring Stories
The passengers on the bus watched sympathetically as the attractive
young woman with the white cane made her way carefully up the steps.
She paid the driver and, using her hands to feel the location of the
seats, walked down the aisle and found the seat he had told her was
empty. Then she settled in, placed her briefcase on her lap and rested
her cane against her leg.

It had been a year since Safiya, thirty-four, became blind. Due to a

medical misdiagnosis she had been rendered sightless, and she was
suddenly thrown into a world of darkness, anger, frustration and self-
pity. Once a fiercely independent woman, Safiya now felt condemned by
this terrible twist of fate to become a powerless, helpless burden on
everyone around her.

"How could this have happened to me?" she would plead, her heart
knotted with anger. But no matter how much she cried or ranted, she
knew the painful truth her sight was never going to return. A cloud of
depression hung over Safiya's once optimistic spirit. Just getting
through each day was an exercise in frustration and exhaustion. And all
she had to cling to was her husband Meraj.

Meraj was an Air Force officer and he loved Safiya with all of his
heart. When she first lost her sight, he watched her sink into despair
and was determined to help his wife gain the strength and confidence
she needed to become independent again. Meraj's military background
had trained him well to deal with sensitive situations, and yet he knew
this was the most difficult battle he would ever face.

Finally, Safiya felt ready to return to her job, but how would she get
there? She used to take the bus, but was now too frightened to get
around the city by herself. Meraj volunteered to drive her to work
each day, even though they worked at opposite ends of the city.
2
https://academictips.org/blogs/

At first, this comforted Safiya and fulfilled Meraj's need to protect

his sightless wife who was so insecure about performing the slightest
task. Soon, however, Meraj realized that this arrangement was not
working - it was hectic, and costly. Safiya is going to have to start
taking the bus again, he admitted to himself. But just the thought of
mentioning it to her made him cringe. She was still so fragile, so angry.
How would she react?

Just as Meraj predicted, Safiya was horrified at the idea of taking the
bus again. "I am blind!" she responded bitterly. "How am I supposed to
know where I am going? I feel like you are abandoning me."

Meraj's heart broke to hear these words, but he knew what had to be
done. Meraj promised Safiya that each morning and evening he would
ride the bus with her, for as long as it took, until she got the hang of
it. And that is exactly what happened. For two solid weeks, Meraj,
military uniform and all, accompanied Safiya to and from work each
day. Meraj taught her how to rely on her other senses, specifically her
hearing, to determine where she was and how to adapt to her new
environment.

Meraj helped her befriend the bus drivers who could watch out for her
and save her a seat. Meraj made her laugh, even on those not-so-good
days when she would trip exiting the bus or drop her briefcase. Each
morning they made the journey together and Meraj would take a cab
back to his office. Although this routine was even more costly and
exhausting than the previous one, Meraj knew it was only a matter of
time before Safiya would be able to ride the bus on her own. Meraj
believed in her, in the Safiya he used to know before she would lost
her sight, who was not afraid of any challenge and who would never,
ever quit.

Finally, Safiya decided that she was ready to try the trip on her own.
Monday morning arrived, and before she left, she threw her arms
3
https://academictips.org/blogs/

around Meraj, her temporary bus riding companion, her husband, and
her best friend. Her eyes filled with tears of gratitude for his loyalty,
his patience, his love. Safiya said good-bye, and for the first time, they
went their separate ways.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday... Each day on her own went

perfectly and Safiya had never felt better. Safiya was doing it! She
was going to work all by herself!

On Friday morning, Safiya took the bus to work as usual. As she was
paying for her fare to exit the bus, the driver said, "Sister, I
sure envy you."

Safiya was not sure if the driver was speaking to her or not. After all,
who on earth would ever envy a blind woman who had struggled just to
find the courage to live for the past year? Curious, she asked the
driver, "Why do you say that you envy me?"

The driver responded, "It must feel so good to be taken care of and
protected like you are."

Safiya had no idea what the driver was talking about, and asked again,
"What do you mean?"

The driver answered, "You know, every morning for the past week, a
fine looking gentleman in a military uniform has been standing across
the corner watching you when you get off the bus. He makes sure you
cross the street safely and he watches you until you enter your office
building. Then he blows you a kiss, gives you a little salute and walks
away. You are one lucky woman."

Tears of happiness poured down Safiya's cheeks. For although she

could not physically see him, she had always felt Meraj's presence.
Safiya was lucky, so lucky, for he had given her a gift more powerful

than sight, a gift she did not need to see to believe - Gift of Love that
can bring light where there had been darkness ...

The important things in life

A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the
table in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a
very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with
rocks, about 2 inches in diameter.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it
was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into
the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the
open areas between the rocks.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it
was.

The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of
course, the sand filled up the remaining open areas of the jar.

He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded
with a unanimous Yes.

Now, said the professor, I want you to recognize that this jar
represents your life. The rocks are the important things your family,

5
https://academictips.org/blogs/

your partner, your health, your children things that if everything else
was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The
pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house,
your car. The sand is everything else, the small stuff.

If you put the sand into the jar first, he continued, there is no room
for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend
all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room
for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things
that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your
partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the
house, give a dinner party, or fix the disposal.

Take care of the rocks first the things that really matter. Set your
priorities. The rest is just sand.

Give time to our family

After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman

out to dinner and a movie. She said, I love you, but I know this other
woman loves you and would love to spend some time with you.

The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my MOTHER,

who has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my
three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally. That

6

night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie. Whats
wrong, are you well? she asked.

My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a
surprise invitation is a sign of bad news. I thought that it would be
pleasant to spend some time with you, I responded. Just the two of
us. She thought about it for a moment, and then said, I would like
that very much.

That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up I was a bit
nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too, seemed
to be nervous about our date. She waited in the door with her coat on.
She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn
to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. She smiled from a face that
was as radiant as an angels. I told my friends that I was going to go
out with my son, and they were impressed, she said, as she got into
the car. They cant wait to hear about our meeting.

We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and
cozy. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we
sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print.
Half way through the entries, I lifted my eyes and saw Mom sitting
there staring at me. A nostalgic smile was on her lips. It was I who
used to have to read the menu when you were small, she said. Then
its time that you relax and let me return the favor, I responded.
During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation nothing
extraordinary but catching up on recent events of each others life.
We talked so much that we missed the movie. As we arrived at her
house later, she said, Ill go out with you again, but only if you let me
invite you. I agreed.

7
https://academictips.org/blogs/

How was your dinner date? asked my wife when I got home. Very
nice. Much more so than I could have imagined, I answered.

A few days later, my mother died of a massive heart attack. It

happened so suddenly that I didnt have a chance to do anything for
her. Some time later, I received an envelope with a copy of a
restaurant receipt from the same place mother and I had dined. An
attached note said: I paid this bill in advance. I wasnt sure that I
could be there; but nevertheless, I paid for two plates one for you
and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant
for me. I love you, son.

At that moment, I understood the importance of saying in time: I

LOVE YOU and to give our loved ones the time that they deserve.
Nothing in life is more important than your family. Give them the time
they deserve, because these things cannot be put off till some other
time.

The Cockroach Theory for Self Development

At a restaurant, a cockroach suddenly flew from somewhere and sat on

a lady.

She started screaming out of fear.

8
https://academictips.org/blogs/

With a panic stricken face and trembling voice, she started jumping,
with both her hands desperately trying to get rid of the cockroach.

Her reaction was contagious, as everyone in her group also got panicky.

The lady finally managed to push the cockroach away but it landed on
another lady in the group.

Now, it was the turn of the other lady in the group to continue the
drama.

The waiter rushed forward to their rescue. In the relay of throwing,

the cockroach next fell upon the waiter.

The waiter stood firm, composed himself and observed the behavior of
the cockroach on his shirt. When he was confident enough, he grabbed
it with his fingers and threw it out of the restaurant.

Sipping my coffee and watching the amusement, the antenna of my

mind picked up a few thoughts and started wondering, was the
cockroach responsible for their histrionic behavior?

If so, then why was the waiter not disturbed? He handled it near to
perfection, without any chaos.

It is not the cockroach, but the inability of those people to handle the
disturbance caused by the cockroach, that disturbed the ladies.

I realized that, it is not the shouting of my father or my boss or my

wife that disturbs me, but its my inability to handle the disturbances
caused by their shouting that disturbs me.

Its not the traffic jams on the road that disturbs me, but my inability
to handle the disturbance caused by the traffic jam that disturbs me.

Homeless Man Steve

by STEPHEN on SEPTEMBER 20, 2015 36 COMMENTS

This evening as I was leaving Best Buy, I noticed this man going
through the garbage can outside of the store. As I walked to my car I
watched him as he reached in the garbage can and pulled out fast food
trash bags and inspected all that was in the thrown away bags. He did
this for several minutes. He would find a few fries in one bag and a bite
or two of a hamburger in another bag. You can see the hamburger
wrapper by his knee where he was placing the food items hed found.

He never bothered anyone or tried to stop and beg for money as people
entered and left the store. After he went through the entire trash can
he neatly cleaned up the area and wrapped up the food he found in the
dirty hamburger wrapper. My heart literally hurt for him. I am not
someone who just hands out money or even helps homeless people
because so many are not truly homeless. I dont guess Ive ever seen
someone actually go through a garbage can to try to find food to eat.

10
https://academictips.org/blogs/

Steve

I knew I had to help him. I got out of my car and asked him if I could
buy him something to eat. He told me he would appreciate anything I
could get him. He was on a bike and I told him if hed follow me Id buy
him a meal at the fast food place around the block. He followed me and
I bought him the biggest meal they had on the menu. The only request
he gave me for his order was if I could get him a big glass of sweet tea
to go with his meal!

When I brought him his food, he was so thankful. He told me his name
was Steve and hed been homeless ever since his sister died last
September. He was trying to get off the streets, but it was so hard. I
told him God loved him and I would pray for him. He told me again how
much he appreciated the meal.

When I got back in my car, I drove off with such a heaviness in my

heart for this man. I drove down the road and felt compelled to go
back to help this man. When I came back he had finished his meal and
was riding away. I pulled up beside him and asked him if there was any
way I could help him. He told me not really. He never asked me for
money. I asked him if I could buy him a few meals and put it on a gift
card for him. He told me that would be so kind. I drove to McDonalds
and bought him some meals and gave him a gift card.

He broke down crying. He told me that he prayed for me today! I

wasnt sure what he meant (I was assuming he was praying for me for
what I did for him) so I thanked him. He said, No, you dont
understand. I prayed that God would send someone to buy me a hot
meal today and he sent you! I didnt know what to say I was
speechless! Praying for a hot meal wasnt a prayer I had prayed today!
11
https://academictips.org/blogs/

Come to think of it, thats not a prayer Ive ever prayed! I always pray
over my food, but Ive never prayed for a meal its expected! Ive
never doubted that I wouldnt be able to eat Tears began to fill my
eyes! Oh my how blessed am I Maybe God used me to answer this
mans prayer to let him know that He cares for Him and knows what
goes going through! But, maybe God used this man to show me just how
blessed I am and what I take for granted

He said, You see, I have cancer! He pulled up his shirt and pointed to
a huge mass that was poking out from his stomach. He said said he
knew it wouldnt be much longer. I asked him if knew Jesus. He told me
that he did. I asked if I could pray for him and he said that I could.
We prayed right there on the sidewalk of McDonalds. Tears just
poured from his eyes. He told me he knew that he was going to die and
that he was ready to die. He was tired of being in pain and he would be
better off dead because this was no life living this way. I stayed and
encouraged him for a few minutes trying to fight back my tears. My
prayer is that I showed him the love of Jesus today that something I
said gave him a hope.

You see, everybody has a story! I know Steves story now all because
I felt compelled to help him he ended up touching me today!

When I left him, I knew I had done what God wanted me to do! God put
him in my path today I know he did! Ive never felt such a feeling to
help someone as I did today. I was reminded again of how blessed I am!
I have a vehicle that gets me from place to place, I have a roof over
my head, clean clothes, money to buy a hot meal, running water,
electricity, my health, a job, family, and friends! Sometimes God sends

12
https://academictips.org/blogs/

situations our way to remind us of how blessed we are! If youve read

this far, please remember Steve in your prayers!

Yes, I have been blessed, Gods so good to me! Precious are His
thoughts of you and me! Theres no way I could count them, theres not
enough time, so Ill just thank Him for being so kind. God has been
good, so good! I have been blessed!

Black or White

When I was in elementary school, I got into a major argument with a

boy in my class. I have forgotten what the argument was about, but I
have never forgotten the lesson I learned that day.

I was convinced that I was right and he was wrong and he was just
as convinced that I was wrong and he was right. The teacher
decided to teach us a very important lesson.

She brought us up to the front of the class and placed him on one side
of her desk and me on the other. In the middle of her desk was a large,
round object. I could clearly see that it was black. She asked the boy
what color the object was. White, he answered.

13
https://academictips.org/blogs/

I couldnt believe he said the object was white, when it was obviously
black! Another argument started between my classmate and me, this
time about the color of the object.

The teacher told me to go stand where the boy was standing and told
him to come stand where I had been. We changed places, and now she
asked me what the color of the object was. I had to answer, White.

It was an object with two differently colored sides, and from his
viewpoint it was white. Only from my side it was black.

Sometimes we need to look at the problem from the other persons

view in order to truly understand his/her perspective.

Dont Hope, Decide!

in MARRIAGE , MOTIVATIONAL STORIES

While waiting to pick up a friend at the airport in Portland, Oregon, I

had one of those life-changing experiences that you hear other people
talk about the kind that sneaks up on you unexpectedly. This one
occurred a mere two feet away from me.

Straining to locate my friend among the passengers deplaning through

the jet way, I noticed a man coming toward me carrying two light bags.
He stopped right next to me to greet his family.

First he motioned to his youngest son (maybe six years old) as he laid
down his bags. They gave each other a long, loving hug. As they
separated enough to look in each others face, I heard the father say,

15
https://academictips.org/blogs/

Its so good to see you, son. I missed you so much! His son smiled
somewhat shyly, averted his eyes and replied softly, Me, too, Dad!

Then the man stood up, gazed in the eyes of his oldest son (maybe nine
or ten) and while cupping his sons face in his hands said, Youre
already quite the young man. I love you very much, Zach! They too
hugged a most loving, tender hug.

While this was happening, a baby girl (perhaps one or one-and-a-half)

was squirming excitedly in her mothers arms, never once taking her
little eyes off the wonderful sight of her returning father. The man
said, Hi, baby girl! as he gently took the child from her mother. He
quickly kissed her face all over and then held her close to his chest
while rocking her from side to side. The little girl instantly relaxed and
simply laid her head on his shoulder, motionless in pure contentment.

After several moments, he handed his daughter to his oldest son and
declared, Ive saved the best for last! and proceeded to give his wife
the longest, most passionate kiss I ever remember seeing. He gazed
into her eyes for several seconds and then silently mouthed. I love you
so much! They stared at each others eyes, beaming big smiles at one
another, while holding both hands.

For an instant they reminded me of newlyweds, but I knew by the age

of their kids that they couldnt possibly be. I puzzled about it for a
moment then realized how totally engrossed I was in the wonderful
display of unconditional love not more than an arms length away from
me. I suddenly felt uncomfortable, as if I was invading something
sacred, but was amazed to hear my own voice nervously ask, Wow! How
long have you two been married?

16
https://academictips.org/blogs/

Been together fourteen years total, married twelve of those. he

replied, without breaking his gaze from his lovely wifes face. Well
then, how long have you been away? I asked. The man finally turned
and looked at me, still beaming his joyous smile. Two whole days!

Two days? I was stunned. By the intensity of the greeting, I had

assumed hed been gone for at least several weeks if not months. I
know my expression betrayed me.

I said almost offhandedly, hoping to end my intrusion with some

semblance of grace (and to get back to searching for my friend), I
hope my marriage is still that passionate after twelve years!

The man suddenly stopped smiling.

He looked me straight in the eye, and with forcefulness that burned

right into my soul, he told me something that left me a different
person. He told me, Dont hope, friend decide! Then he flashed me
his wonderful smile again, shook my hand and said, God bless!

A Short Story on Self Confidence

There was a business executive who was deep in debt and could see no
way out.

Creditors were closing in on him. Suppliers were demanding payment.

He sat on the park bench, head in hands, wondering if anything could
save his company from bankruptcy.

Suddenly an old man appeared before him. I can see that something is
troubling you, he said.

After listening to the executives woes, the old man said, I believe I
can help you.

He asked the man his name, wrote out a check, and pushed it into his
hand saying, Take this money. Meet me here exactly one year from
today, and you can pay me back at that time.

Then he turned and disappeared as quickly as he had come.

The business executive saw in his hand a check for $500,000, signed
by John D. Rockefeller, then one of the richest men in the world!

I can erase my money worries in an instant! he realized. But instead,

the executive decided to put the uncashed check in his safe. Just
knowing it was there might give him the strength to work out a way to
save his business, he thought.

With renewed optimism, he negotiated better deals and extended

terms of payment. He closed several big sales. Within a few months, he
was out of debt and making money once again.

Exactly one year later, he returned to the park with the uncashed
check. At the agreed-upon time, the old man appeared. But just as the

executive was about to hand back the check and share his success
story, a nurse came running up and grabbed the old man.

Im so glad I caught him! she cried. I hope he hasnt been bothering

you. Hes always escaping from the rest home and telling people hes
John D. Rockefeller.

And she led the old man away by the arm.

The astonished executive just stood there, stunned. All year long hed
been wheeling and dealing, buying and selling, convinced he had half a
million dollars behind him.

Suddenly, he realized that it wasnt the money, real or imagined, that

had turned his life around. It was his newfound self-confidence that
gave him the power to achieve anything he went after.

The story of a woodcutter

by STEPHEN on JUNE 4, 2012 70 COMMENTS

in MOTIVATIONAL STORIES

Once upon a time, a very strong woodcutter asked for a job in a timber
merchant and he got it. The pay was really good and so was the work
condition. For those reasons, the woodcutter was determined to do his
best.

19
https://academictips.org/blogs/

His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he supposed
to work.

The first day, the woodcutter brought 18 trees.

Congratulations, the boss said. Go on that way!

Very motivated by the boss words, the woodcutter tried harder the
next day, but he could only bring 15 trees. The third day he tried even
harder, but he could only bring 10 trees. Day after day he was bringing
less and less trees.

I must be losing my strength, the woodcutter thought. He went to

the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was
going on.

When was the last time you sharpened your axe? the boss asked.

Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy

trying to cut trees

Reflection:

Our lives are like that. We sometimes get so busy that we dont take
time to sharpen the axe. In todays world, it seems that everyone is
busier than ever, but less happy that ever.

Why is that? Could it be that we have forgotten how to stay sharp?

Theres nothing wrong with activity and hard work. But we should not
get so busy that we neglect the truly important things in life, like our
personal life, taking time to get close to our Creator, giving more time
for our family, taking time to read etc.

20
https://academictips.org/blogs/

We all need time to relax, to think and meditate, to learn and grow. If
we dont take the time to sharpen the axe, we will become dull and
lose our effectiveness.

Military: A beautiful true love story

STORIES , MOTIVATIONAL STORIES

One day, a young guy and a young girl fell in love.

But the guy came from a poor family. The girls parents werent too
happy.

So the young man decided not only to court the girl but to court her
parents as well. In time, the parents saw that he was a good man and
was worthy of their daughters hand.

But there was another problem: The man was a soldier. Soon, war broke
out and he was being sent overseas for a year. The week before he
left, the man knelt on his knee and asked his lady love, Will you marry
me? She wiped a tear, said yes, and they were engaged. They agreed
that when he got back in one year, they would get married.

21
https://academictips.org/blogs/

But tragedy struck. A few days after he left, the girl had a major
vehicular accident. It was a head-on collision.

When she woke up in the hospital, she saw her father and mother
crying. Immediately, she knew there was something wrong.

She later found out that she suffered brain injury. The part of her
brain that controlled her face muscles was damaged. Her once lovely
face was now disfigured. She cried as she saw herself in the mirror.
Yesterday, I was beautiful. Today, Im a monster. Her body was also
covered with so many ugly wounds.

Right there and then, she decided to release her fianc from their
promise. She knew he wouldnt want her anymore. She would forget
about him and never see him again.

For one year, the soldier wrote many lettersbut she wouldnt answer.
He phoned her many times but she wouldnt return her calls.

But after one year, the mother walked into her room and announced,
Hes back from the war.

The girl shouted, No! Please dont tell him about me. Dont tell him Im
here!

The mother said, Hes getting married, and handed her a wedding
invitation.

The girls heart sank. She knew she still loved himbut she had to
forget him now.

With great sadness, she opened the wedding invitation.

And then she saw her name on it!

22
https://academictips.org/blogs/

Confused, she asked, What is this?

That was when the young man entered her room with a bouquet of
flowers. He knelt beside her and asked, Will you marry me?

The girl covered her face with her hands and said, Im ugly!

The man said, Without your permission, your mother sent me your
photos. When I saw your photos, I realized that nothing has changed.
Youre still the person I fell in love. Youre still as beautiful as ever.
Because I love you!
