This research aims to improve the mastery and interest of spelling

syllables using reading cards amongst students in Year 2 Arif in one of
the schools in the Kubang Semang district, Seberang Perai Tengah,
Penang. Respondents in this study consisted of 6 year two students,
three boys and three girls who are categorized as weak and average
achievers. The Kemmis & McTaggart (1998) Model was used as a basic
guide for the research. The researcher has done the research using the
four processes which is found in the model, which are planning, action,
observation and reflection. From the results of the initial survey of the
problem, the researcher found that the respondents were rather weak in
spelling syllables. Therefore, the researcher has devised an action using
reading cards, to increase their ability to spell syllables and interest
through interventions carried out three times. This study is supported by
the use of instruments such as pre and post test, questionnaires,
observations and analysis documents to collect data. The data from this
research is analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social
Sciences (SPSS) and Excel. The findings of the research indicates that
the use of reading cards is suitable to increase students achievement in
spelling syllables. Indirectly, the use of reading cards has increased the
Year Two pupils interest in spelling syllables.
