CHAPTER- 2

Industry overview
2.1 PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE TRENDS

Past

Printing goes back to the duplication of images by means of stamps in very early times. The use
of round seals for rolling an impression into clay tablets goes back to early Mesopotamian
civilization before 3000 BC, where they are the most common works of art to survive, and
feature complex and beautiful images. The printing press is considered one of the most important
inventions in history. This device has made it possible for books, newspapers, magazines, and
other reading materials to be produced in great numbers, and it plays an important role in
promoting literacy among the masses. It was developed based on early principles of printing, and
it has undergone many modifications over the years to meet the needs of people in different eras.
In both China and Egypt, the use of small stamps for seals preceded the use of larger blocks. In
Europe and India, the printing certainly preceded the printing of paper or papyrus. This was also
the case in China. The process is essentially the same - in Europe special presentation
impressions of prints were often printed on silk until the seventeenth century.

A printing press is a mechanical device for applying pressure to an inked surface resting upon a
medium (such as paper or cloth), thereby transferring an image. The systems involved were first
assembled in Germany by the goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-15th century. Printing
methods based on Gutenberg's printing press spread rapidly throughout first Europe and then the
rest of the world, replacing most block printing and making it the sole progenitor of modern
movable type printing. As a method of creating reproductions for mass consumption, The
printing press has been superseded by the advent of offset printing.

Johannes Gutenberg's work in the printing press began in approximately 1436 when he partnered
with Andreas Dritzehena man he had previously instructed in gem-cuttingand Andreas
Heilmann, owner of a paper mill. It was not until a 1439 lawsuit against Gutenberg that official
record exists; witnesses testimony discussed type, an inventory of metals (including lead) and
his type mold.
Present

In todays world, printing technology has evolved tremendously and doesnt seem to be slowing
down at all. All those cool magazines and newspapers we buy everyday come from giant web
printers that are capable of printing hundreds of thousands and even millions of copies. Wide
format printers produce all of those giant banners and posters we see everywhere we go. And its
truly amazing thats theres probably some kind of printer in every corporate office in the world.
And now the current trend in the printing world is to print green and is certainly taking printing
green into consideration. Its no secret that the printing industry has had an effect on our
environment especially with our forests, water and energy supplies. So as time progresses it will
become even more important to make printing green a standard and not a trend. And we here will
do our best to make that happen in order to continue the success and evolution of the worlds
printing industry.

Future
Printing is planning to become a one of the key objectives of almost all organizations today and
creating visibility and memorability. Printing in high quality of multi media advertising .The
challenge on the road is more than just in time delivery and competitive price. It is more about
creating one stop shop for transforming products and services. The best media plans to provide
the target audience with an optimum level of coverage according to full creative approach. Print
media seeks to determine the most appropriate media mix for achieving agreed objectives in
terms of ad weight, awareness, response levels. Lehar advertising will offer a comprehensive
public relations service that goes a long way in making your presence felt in the right media at
the right time. And in future Lehar will span across categories like retailing, and consumer and

consumers through newspapers, magazines, flyers, posters and billboards.

Print advertising has always reflected and evolved in symmetry with societies cultures and
technological advancements. The new post brings together 22 examples, laid out
chronologically, representing the creative and technical development of print advertising
throughout its history. After the development of the printing press, advertisements began
appearing in weekly newspapers and periodical journals in England, notably during the 17th and
18th centuries. These adverts often promoted the publishers other productions, declared new
medicines, or reported the discoveries and inventions of the Enlightenment era. This advert from
the 1760s announces a demonstration of a microscope by John Cuff and his collection of
Objects, Insects and Animalcula. through printing advertisements. In the second half of the
19th Century, trade cards became a popular means of advertising goods. The cards could be
given out in towns and cities, distributed by shops and businessmen, or shared in social circles.
Scented cards were used to promote perfumes, such as this example from the 1880s advertising
Hoyts German Cologne. In contemporary print advertising designers are able to visualize almost
infinite possibilities through digital image manipulation, but some of the best graphics return to
basics to carry a commercial message. The advert made by Nike Basketball League players using
