Veterans Day Commemorative Event

Many events will be held to celebrate Veterans Day in the San Marcos community.

San Marcos, Texas October 27, 2015: A ceremony will be held in the quad on Wednesday,
Nov 11, 2015 to celebrate Veterans Day. This free event will have a performance from the Armed Forces
Medley and a military flyover.

Veterans Day started on November 1919 when President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the
first commemoration of Armistice Day. The original concept for the celebration was for a day to observe
the parades, public meetings and a brief suspension of business. An act was approved on May 13,
1938, making the eleventh of November in each year a legal holiday, known as "Armistice Day."
Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, the, the Act of
1938 was amended by changing out the word "Armistice" and introducing the word "Veterans" in its
place. On June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

In the San Marcos, Veterans Day is a recognized holiday. That is why each year the Texas State
Student Foundation and the Dean of Students Office sponsor a Veterans Day Commemoration. A
ceremony to provide a moment to recognize the commitments and sacrifices made by our fellow
student, faculty, staff, alumni and community veterans. The program will include a statement from a
distinguished speaker representing one of the military branches as well as University President Denise
M. Trauth. A reception will be held directly after the ceremony in Flowers Hall with military exhibits and
memorabilia on display. Seating will open at 10:30 a.m. and the event will start at 10:50 a.m.
