The Digital Divide
the gulf between those who have ready access to technology and the Internet,
and those who do not.
The Digital Divide
Who is affected most?
The Rich and the Poor
Educated vs. Uneducated

For children in low-income school districts, inadequate access to

technology can hinder them from learning the tech skills that are crucial
to success in todays economy.
The Digital Divide
While smartphones have helped to bridge the Digital Divide - however, if
education or access to resources to pay for technology is lacking, there is
still a gap between meaningful use

Pros to digital technology -

Able to gain understanding for concepts that may be hard to grasp -
Google
Information sharing is more readily available
Communication with people from all over the world
The Digital Divide
Cons
Access to adequate internet in many areas of the world are
challenging
Example: Many First Nations communities in Canada report having
inadequate access to the Internet
Technology does have a tendency to fail - user error, server problems
etc.
Misinformation and hatred can be spread quickly and it is hard to
undo
WHAT HAPPENS ON THE INTERNET STAYS ON THE INTERNET
FOREVER
Role of the Media in Communication and Diversity
You task

As a class, we will be viewing different clips from different news agencies on

the same topic.

You will be analyzing the ways that they present the topic.

Do you notice any biases? Body language? Any overt opinions?

Before we get started...
Preamble
We are going to be watching a clip about 9/11
It is long, but it shows the different news networks responding to 9/11
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHcQ89pxjd4
What do you notice about the ways that this coverage is happening?
Media Coverage and Hysteria
Post 9/11, the world changed

9/11 changed the ways that we consume news. 24 Hour News channels like
CNN, FOX News and MSNBC were turned on constantly.

Since then, minority groups - especially those who appear to follow the Islamic
faith have been targeted of hysteria and Islamophobia.

Techno-Isolation
American vs. Canadian Media
Ever wonder why you are hearing more Canadian based artists on the radio?
Why Nickelback exploded into popularity and you cant stop hearing them?

CRTC - Canadian Radio-Televisions and Telecommunications Commission

Mandates that a certain number of Canadian content must be played on the

radio during the day,
Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
Canadas national public broadcasters
are the Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation (CBC) and la Socit
Radio-Canada(SRC), the
French-language network.
The CBC and SRC use radio, television,
and Internet technologies to express
Canadian perspectives.
Public Funding for Public Broadcasters
There is debate about the extent to which the
government should finance public broadcasters. Should
they be supported at all?
Some Canadians who argue in favour of national public
broadcasting:
For Public Broadcasting
Against Public Broadcasting
Diverse Cultures Use Communications
Technology
Access to technology enables diverse groups and
individuals to connect and share their cultural values
and languages with people around the world.
For example, the Aboriginal Multi-Media Society
(AMMSA) is a Canadian-based Aboriginal
communications society that uses Internet, radio, and
print media to promote Aboriginal cultures.
APTN: Canadas Aboriginal Network
The Aboriginal Peoples Television
Network (APTN) is another example
of how media and communications
technology affect cultural diversity in
Canada.
APTN attempts to reflect the cultures,
languages, and communities of diverse
Aboriginal peoples across Canada.
APTN: Canadas Aboriginal Network
The network was launched in September 1999 and is the
worlds first national Aboriginal television network, with
programming by, for, and about Aboriginal peoples.
The network offers news, entertainment, sports, and
childrens programming to Canadians. Through satellite
technology, viewers all over the world can see APTN.
Sixty per cent of APTNs programming is broadcast in English,
25 per cent is in a variety of Aboriginal languages, and 15 per
cent is in French.
Pop Culture
What is pop culture?

Short for popular culture - the culture of the people.

Pop culture is the result of the cultural trends that result because of mass
media consumption.

The clothes you wear, the music you listen to, basically everything that you do
is the result of popular culture and trend setting
Americanization?
Because of the internet, print media and satellite tv has enabled the spread of
popular culture to take over the world.

Now, the most popular of pop culture appears to be anything that was
created in the United States. This is a phenomenon of the Universalization of
Popular culture.
Think of popular bands - you havent really made it until you make it in the
USA. Specifically los Angeles or New York.

Think of your favourite shows - whether on TV, Netflix, what have you,

Has anyone ever tried to access the American Netflix?

Case Study: Sesame Street
Can you identify these characters?
Has anyone not seen Sesame Street?

Sesame Street was actually

groundbreaking for its time, because
of its focus on diversity.

So many children around the world

were able to relate to characters and
the messages they shared about
friendship and acceptance.

Now, Sesame Street merchandise is

everywhere!
Sesame Street and Hybridization
Sesame Street has exploded into the global community. But not everyone
speaks English!

As a result, sometimes the shows are dubbed into new languages or they gain
rights to the content and produce their own shows to reflect the country and
culture that the show is being broadcasted in!

Language at the core of identity
If languages are to be lost, then a large part of a persons being, a communal
holding of identity, something that only a select people can relate to would be
lost.
Task
Brainstorm to create a list of reasons why languages have been lost. In
your session, talk about the consequences for the identity of members
of a language groups when their language is lost. Then list four positive
steps that members of a group might take to affirm their language and
identity

How can non-members of a group assist in the preservation of language?
