. A ip / network nomads on a realtime journey
through elsewhere / now camping at Biennale Venezia 1993Artists a8 Nomads
‘We willbe travelling for one or two months
through the south east border region of Europe.
‘A joumey through Hungary to Bulgaria and
‘Rumania ends at the Black Sea (like most "road
movies" -at the beach),
During the trip we will fax entries from our
running travelogue - phofographs and collected
pictures and texts ~ to the Casino Container in
Venice. Although the infrastructure of the
‘countries in which we arc travelling is still
incomplete, we can approximate a live rans-
‘mission using a relatively uncomplicated and
‘mobile system: a digital camera, a portable
‘computer anda faxmodem, which opens the line
to the Container by any telephone outlet.
‘An episodic story atives at the Container,
texts and pictures arranged on tree levels time
lines =o be installed as a fax-collage.

A Way of Life
was the year 1988 when the Biennale die Venzia invited the
network pioneers Don Foresta, Ray Gallon, Robert Adrian and
Roy Ascot to perform a telephone-based network art event on the
subject of concrete poetry.
‘The electronic network in use was formerly defined as the
ectronie Café Intemational (ECD by Californian artists Sherrie
Rabinowitz and Kit Galloway and forthe first time realized as @
‘community project in Los Angeles during the Olympic Games in
1984.
Since then the ECI has developed continuously through the
collaboration of universities, museums, institutions and artists
round the world toa handsome possibility for interactive projects
innetwork art. Once installed, the technique iseasy touse andopen
to everybody who has access toa telephone
In 1992 the Casino Container was built as a mobile, futuristic
Café des Anistes by German designers Reinhard Miller, Meyer‘Voggenreiterand Uwe Wagner. Incollaboration
with Axel Winhs and Sabine Voggenreiter, who
‘workin the field of media art and exhibitions,
and by the belp of Don Forest the architectural
structure ofthe Container changed intoanetwork
hhobo for the ECI. During a five years jouney
through Europe the Casino Containerhas started
to work on experimental solutions for public
‘spaces inthe media age by redefining them as an
extended virtual area and elaborating electronic
nomadism as an upcoming way of life.
‘The 1993 Biennale di Venzia has invited the
Casino Container as an outdoor-contribution to
the main show "I Punti Cardinale dell’ Ante
‘Sited at Riva dei Sette Marri the Container will
‘open a window from Venice tothe world for all
anists of the Biennale, About 30 projects are
‘developed forthe 120 dayswithnetworkpartners
in Los Angeles, Toronto, Pars, Lyon, Helsinki,
‘Aarhus, Cologne, Graz, Sydney, Fukui, Tokyo
and others.
"Asa meeting point and Café des Artistes the
Casino Container will give hospitality to the
travellers, the artists and the people of Venice,
bringing them together in a space which is
completely new for all of them.
‘To remember the historical part ofthe nomad
as a cultural transmitter, as the stranger, the
‘adventurer and the alien with connotations to the
‘enemy, hes the one who seeks for hospitality by
donating ithimselfand some secrets ofthe world
to the settled, who - instead of remaining in
anxious enmity - offers to the nomad the
‘opportunity to change from guest to host by
‘ving him a transitory space.
In times ofa global information society with
itsgrowing tyranny ofprivacy inclosed chambers
‘of one-way-communication the neccessity for
‘breaking through the bariers of fear against the
‘lien into a real travelogue is as evident as never
before.
‘Paul Viriio, the analyser of speed and accele-
ration, mentioned that there are at least (wo
possible solutions for socal and global ite: ifife
‘will not become ar, it will be fascism.
Poipot, we say and go ahead,
