1. Flush Bag Set-Up (stage set-up for administration of next dose IVPB)
a. Primary / secondary infusion set-up using NS flush bag as primary solution
b. Use an empty IVPB bag to represent previously administered medication (connect secondary
tubing above back check valve on primary tubing)
2. Gather Supplies
a. IVPB with ordered medication
b. 1 NS flush
c. Alcohol swab
5. Lower empty IVPB bag below primary bag and back prime primary IV solution into IVPB bag until line
is cleared of mediation from previous infusion
11. After IVPB has completely infused, allow primary solution (NS flush bag) to infuse until line is fully
cleared of all medication (primary bag will automatically begin infusing after IVPB has emptied)
13. Disconnect patient from IV set-up (aseptically cap end of primary tubing after disconnecting from pt)
IVPB Medication Administration via COMPATIBLE Mainline Infusion
5. Lower empty IVPB bag below primary bag and back prime primary IV solution into IVPB bag until line
is cleared of mediation from previous infusion
*Primary solution will automatically begin infusing after IVPB bag has emptied
If no other immediate IV access is available (existing or start new line), follow the steps below:
o Disconnect incompatible mainline infusion
o Using a new primary/secondary flush bag set-up, administer IVPB as IVPB via a capped line
o Following IVPB infusion/flush, disconnect from patient and re-connect mainline infusion
IVP MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION
1. Gather Supplies
b. 2 NS flushes
c. Alcohol swab
4. Flush IV catheter at same ROA as medication to fully clear line of all medication

b. Alcohol swab
4. Using port closest to patient, aseptically administer IVP medication at prescribed ROA
IVP Medication Administration via an INCOMPATIBLE Mainline Infusion
3. Gather Supplies
b. 2 NS flushes
c. Alcohol swab
5. Using port closest to patient, aseptically flush IV line to fully clear tubing of incompatible primary IV
solution
6. Using port closest to patient, aseptically administer IVP medication at prescribed ROA
7. Flush IV catheter at same ROA as medication to fully clear line of all medication
