The Future Professoriate Program (FPP)

What is it?
The Future Professoriate Program (FPP) is an initiative sponsored by the Graduate
School Programs office and various academic departments at SU. Our department
plays an important role in promoting FPP programming. Participation in the FPP allows
you to gain insight on the role of teaching in higher education, access resources helpful
towards your post-PhD professional goals, and the opportunity earn a certificate of
teaching.
What does it consist of?
FPP program consists of programming, activities, events and activities organized by
your department and other University programs; an annual conference; and the
opportunity to earn the Certificate in University Teaching (CUT). You can find more
detailed information here: http://graduateschool.syr.edu/programs/future-professoriate-
program/certificate-in-university-teaching/.These events and resources are geared
towards SU graduate students aspiring to academic careers in the professoriate.
However, any graduate student is welcome to participate.
Who is eligible?
Any current graduate student is eligible to attend programming (university-wide as well
as anything organized by the department) and the annual conference. In fact, you are
automatically enrolled in FPP each year!
I heard there was money. Tell me there is money!
Yes. If you are a second- or third-year student in good standing with the department
you are eligible to receive a sum of money at the end of Spring semester.
Eligibility is met by the following:
1. Attendance to at least 6 FPP programming events
a. 3 of these MUST be FPP sessions that are sponsored and organized by
the Sociology department.
b. The remaining 3 events can be any of these
i. Job talks, faculty colloquia or pro-seminar sessions (Thursdays 4-
5:30 p.m., except the happy hours or socialization-only events).
ii. FPP sessions organized by other departments.
iii. Events and activities organized or sponsored by the Graduate
School Programs office that are geared towards graduate student
professionalization. These also includes any sessions linked to the
Certificate of University Teaching.
iv. Events and activities organized or sponsored by Syracuse
University office that are geared towards graduate student
professionalization. For example, certain events sponsored by the
office of Career Services.
v. Presentation at an annual conference (such as ASA, SSSP, ESS,
etc.)
2. Remaining in good standing with the department
3. Completing the FPP participation form by the deadline (TBA at the beginning of
Spring semester).
Example 1: Theresa attends 4 FPP panels organized by our department,
1 pro-seminar session, 1 faculty colloquium, 1 talk by the Career Services
on CV preparation and presented 2 roundtables at the ASA conference.
She then turns in the participation form by the deadline.
Theresa has met the requirements to receive a stipend. =)
Example 2: Angie attends the happy hour pro-seminars, presents at 2
conferences, and 3 FPP sessions; one sponsored by the Sociology dept.,
the other 2, by the Anthropology dept. Angie forgot to turn in a
participation form.
Angie has not met the requirements to receive a stipend. =(
What is this Certificate of University Teaching (CUT)?
The CUT is awarded to graduate students who fulfill certain requirements, including
planning and preparing for an independent teaching experience under a faculty mentor
as well as the curating of a teaching portfolio that exemplifies your experience and
credentials as an instructor. It is advised, and recommended, that students begin
planning for their CUT around their 2nd year.
Eligibility to receive the CUT
1. Attendance to 4 of the CUT-organized seminars
a. You can substitute 1 of the CUT seminars by attending the Annual FPP
Conference. CUT seminars as well as information about the Annual FPP
conference is found on the FPP website
http://graduateschool.syr.edu/programs/future-professoriate-
program/about-the-fpp/
2. Evidence demonstrating active engagement in FPP or selected departmental-
sponsored programming. Active engagement can also be met by attendance to
university-organized professionalization events, participation in discipline-related
conferences as well as attendance to other events geared towards development
of your skills as an instructor.
3. Preparation of a teaching portfolio
4. Completion of an independent teaching mentored experience supervised by a
faculty mentor (e.g. your advisor). An independent teaching experience can
consist of teaching as a PTI, TA duties that demonstrate use of pedagogical skills
(e.g. SOC 101 recitations), or a combination of TA duties and guest lecturing.
The current Sociology FPP coordinator will discuss more on FPP, the CUT and the FPP
annual conference at the next SGSA meeting.
