Think Safety, or Risk Injury
Even plumbers are exposed to hazards that
could require personal protective equipment
hen homeowners think of a plumber, their first
image is often a contractor torqueing on a wrench
W to fix a leak under the sink.
They dont think about safety glasses, gloves
and other personal protective equipment (PPE). As plumbing
professionals, however, you know what youre working with
daily and how dangerous some of those tools and techniques
can be. That is why PPE is essential.
Keeping yourself safe isnt just about keeping OSHA
off your back. Its about protecting your business and
most importantly yourself and your staff. Even if you
work primarily in homes where your biggest hazard might
be bumping your head on a cabinet, you should still know
what PPE works best.
Open those eyes: Safety glasses protect your eyes
from caustic chemical splashes, like when the customer
forgets to tell you they poured a cleaning solution
down the drain right before calling you. They also
protect your eyes from being hit by tools, flying debris
and soldering spatters.
Head in the game: You wont need a hard hat too
often, but if you are working on a construction project
or crawling around in an attic or other tight space,
its a good idea to wear one. You might also consider
a bump cap. Its technically not a hard hat and is
not approved by the ANSI, but it can provide light
protection from cuts or a glancing blow.
Boots on the ground: You want a good pair of boots
at all times, and make sure theyre slip resistant
because youre working around water. Look for models
with impact-resistant toes to prevent injury from
dropped tools.

Raising a hand: We know gloves arent the easiest
to work in, but they will save your hands. When
soldering, you dont want hot metal or the torch to
come in contact with your hand the burn could
be serious enough to put you out of work. Gloves
will also protect against cuts and chemical burns.
Can you hear me now?: If you are using power
equipment, you should use hearing protection. If
the noise is consistently louder than 90 decibels for
eight hours, you need earplugs. Just 92 decibels
brings the safe duration down to six hours, and for
115 decibels, its only 15 minutes at a time before
OSHA requires hearing protection. Anything over
140 decibels mandates ear protection at all times.
If you want to see some good examples of wearing the
correct safety equipment, look no further than the profile
on Banghart Plumbing in this issue. Dave Banghart and
his apprentice are both wearing gloves and safety glasses.
When needed, the apprentice also wears a mask for further
protection.
THERE ARE DANGERS
If you have worked without any of this safety gear,
there is a reason to start wearing it. Just think of all the
hazards you could face: hearing loss, eye injuries, electrical
shock, mold infestation, biohazardous materials (if working
in medical facilities) and more.

with a lot of versatility, and he isnt
joking.
Banghart, owner of Banghart Plumbing in
Everett, Washington, has only one employee. But
if you look at the list of services, you might think
the company has a staff of 50. Services range from
the typical plumbing repair and installation all
the way to specialized drain cleaning.
Running a plumbing and drain cleaning
business is something Ive always wanted to do,
says Banghart, who has more than 28 years of
experience in the industry working at various
companies after four years in the U.S. Army.
Plumbing is so much a part of Bangharts life
that he encouraged his two sons to enter the
industry which they did.

BRINGING IN DRAIN CLEANING

Banghart didnt clean a single drain for his
first 20 years in the industry; he was content with
plumbing installations and repairs. He steered
clear of drain cleaning because of the cost of
equipment and training.

One of Dave Bangharts favorite pastimes with
his sons as they were growing up was heading to
several local minor league baseball games each year.
So when that minor league team the Everett
AquaSox contacted him about advertising
opportunities, he jumped at the chance.
We met with them, and they told us what they
could do for us, Banghart says. I had been looking
for a way to do a little bit of branding in the community
and help the community at the same time, so that is
how we got together.
The Everett AquaSox, owned by the Seattle Mariners,
provide signage at the stadium for Banghart. His
companys name is also broadcast on the radio during
game coverage, and fans receive packets that include
coupons for Banghart Plumbing.
Were really proud of this sponsorship, Banghart
says. We usually go to four or five games a year still.

a Facebook page and a website.

tional and trouble-free. We also recommend BIO-CLEAN
(Statewide Supply), which is a bacterial treatment that
keeps pipes free of buildup.

drain cleaning job, we do our best to make
sure the system is back in service.

Banghart Plumbing uses two cable machines: a Spar-
tan Tool 300 for mainlines and larger-diameter pipes, and
a Spartan Tool 700 for smaller drains with sinks. The
Spartan Tool 300 gets the most work, and it is absolutely
the best machine a plumber could invest in, he says.
The company has received drain cleaning referrals from
other plumbers. I dont understand why more dont do it.

A TALE OF TWO TOWERS
Banghart has had his share of tough jobs; the
two most memorable jobs took place at towers. One
of his favorites was working on the new air traffic
control tower at the Seattle-Tacoma International
Airport, where he was hired to do most of the
plumbing including a pump station on a midstory.
They forgot to put the pump station on the deck
before the concrete was poured for the next story,
so I was assigned to disassemble the pump station
and move it up piece by piece, Banghart says. When

Its an easy question for owner Dave Banghart.
He just went to Costco and bought storable wire racks.
All the shelves I put in myself, he says. I used some
wire racks that are similar to what you see in a restaurant
kitchen. They worked out really nice.
The shelves are installed in both of the companys

are durable not maintenance-free, obviously, but
as close as you can get, he says.

s the baby boomers (those born between 1946
and 1964) retire in droves and Generation X
(born between 1965 and the late 1970s) is solidly
entrenched for the most part in jobs and careers, it is likely
the next employee youll hire will be a millennial. Also
called Generation Y, this group was born sometime between

understanding the general characteristics that define
millennials can help you recruit and retain these special
snowflakes, as the millennials are sometimes called because
of what their elders perceive as a pampered upbringing.

the almost 80 million millennials in the U.S.
Jason Dorsey, researcher at The Center for
Generational Kinetics based in Austin, Texas, says
members of Generation Y can become valuable, loyal
and high-performing employees. Whats most
interesting is that these high-value outcomes are not
tied to compensation, Dorsey writes on his all-things-
millennials website www.jasondorsey.com.
RETENTION IS KEY
Finding good millennial employees is just the
beginning: keeping millennials as employees is the
bigger challenge. Millennials are the first generation
to enter the workforce with no expectation of being employed
their entire working lives by the same company. This atti-
tude shift was caused more by economic changes than lack
of desire.
They have seen enough of their generations parents
and older family members downsized from companies
after decades of loyalty to ever expect a gold watch
at age 65 from the company that hired them at age 20. A
joint survey of human resources professionals conducted
by the research and consulting firm Millennials Branding
and the job and career website Beyond reported that 45
percent of companies experience higher turnover with
millennials than with older generations.
If your company is struggling to fill job openings
and retain good young employees, here are some tips to
help you land quality millennials and strategies for keep-
ing them:

they were 3 or 4 years old. They have no problem follow-
ing rules if theres a good reason for the rules. Because
weve always done it this way is not an acceptable reason
for anything to a typical millennial. They also appreciate
financial transparency, accepting limits on expenditures
when presented with facts about profit margins.
Tear down walls and rework the organizational chart.
Millennials want fewer layers of management and fewer
walls between management and nonmanagement. A were
all in this together team attitude is more attractive.
Make mentorship a two-way street. Realize younger
workers have knowledge to share with older workers, espe-
cially when it comes to technology.
Beef up your brand. Millennials grew up eating Happy
Meals and wearing brand-name clothing from head to toe.
They can be extremely brand loyal and will be impressed
with a potential employer that does branding right.
Have a strong digital presence and up-to-date tech-
nology. A job candidate will Google your company before
even scheduling an interview, and if all they find is an
amateurish and aging website, they will definitely be
turned off. Seeing that a company uses up-to-date tech-
nology and is active on social media platforms is attrac-
tive to young employees. Someone who is skilled in using
the latest accounting software will not want to work for
someone who still fills out ledgers by hand and uses an
adding machine.
Appreciate them. Maybe its because they didnt keep
score and everyone got participation trophies in their youth
soccer days, but many in this generation seem to need fre-
quent validation. Appreciating an employee who goes above
and beyond will enhance company loyalty.
Stress safety. Members of this generation were strapped
into booster seats until they were practically driving age
and wore bike helmets as a matter of course. Safety is sec-
ond nature to them. They were fussed over as kids and
expect high levels of protection on the job as adults, too.
Seeing your workers in questionable safety situations or
flagrantly breaking safety rules will be a real turnoff for
this generation.
Brag about community involvement and environ-
mental awareness. This generation wants to contribute to
society. Many were required to perform community ser-
vice in middle or high school, and the lesson stuck. They
value volunteerism and charitable giving, and they want
to be a part of a company that does, too. This generation

is also environmentally aware. Theyve been sorting recy-
clables their whole lives. Tout the role the portable sanita-
tion industry plays globally in saving water and protecting
the environment.
Be more flexible. Millennials place a high value on
a flexible work schedule. This might mean allowing office
workers to work from home occasionally or scheduling
jobs in slower times so workers can put in four 10-hour
days and enjoy a three-day weekend. Maybe it means
allowing a young dad time off during the day to volun-
teer at his daughters preschool and letting him make up
the time later in the week. In general, millennials think
about work differently, but work just as hard as anyone
if they feel respected.
GET TO WORK
Millennials are now the majority generation in the U.S.
workforce. If you are from a slightly older generation and
want the company you built to endure, youre probably
going to have to adapt to their way of working. You may
just find your company is better and stronger because of
the changes they inspire. And if you are a hardworking
millennial, there should be plenty of opportunity out there
for you if you can be a little patient with those that came
before you and dont forget to wear your helmet.

Small Machine Yields Big Results

Compact hot-water, drain cleaning unit jump-started

hen master plumber Greg Schulte started Family
Man Plumbing LLC in early 2012, he envisioned

Schulte also notes that the Crap Shooter is eco-friendly
because it uses only water to clean pipes out to about 70
to 90 percent of their original flow rate. And because there
are no moving parts, theres no pipe-wear erosion.
Its plenty powerful, he says. You dont need too
much power to cut through sludge and debris because it
typically stays wet. I used it at a friends house because he
was having a problem with a wash machine drainline.
Other guys ran rotors 75 feet through, but the problems
continued. The Crap Shooter took care of it the first time
through, and no other problems have occurred since then.
That impressed me.

Schulte says he uses the Crap Shooter for about 90
percent of his drain cleaning work. He also uses a RIDGID
K-400 drum cable machine to handle tough root problems
and a RIDGID K-25 hand-held machine.
The Crap Shooter quickly paid for itself, Schulte
points out. So everything I do with it is 100 percent profit,
aside from my overhead. I cant believe I increased my
revenue that much with such a small purchase.
Schulte now has more business than he can handle,
partly because of the Crap Shooter and partly because of
word-of-mouth referrals. As such, hed like to hire employees
who could help him expand his business even more. But
until then, its just him and his Crap Shooter and a
burgeoning drain cleaning business.
I really cant say enough good things about the Crap
Shooter, he says. Without it, Id still be struggling just
a guy with a van.

Getting to the Root of the Problem

I
n three Oklahoma City parks, combination fittings on
mobile homes tapped directly into 6-inch clay sewers
blocked by massive root intrusions that cracked the
hubs and pipes, causing backups. Broken fittings on some
homes allowed wastewater to discharge on the surface.
Plumbers routinely snaked the lines and drilled holes
through the worst impactions at huge expense to the previous
owners. In places, the mains were no longer serviceable.
When the new owners learned that open cutting to
replace the lines would cost twice as much as buying the
real estate, they called John Johnson of Water Works
Plumbing in Oklahoma City. His company specializes in
pipe bursting residential and commercial sewer lines.

Using a 40-ton ram from Pipe Genie Mfg., the crew

worked six months to replace the most critical lines with
6-inch HDPE SDR17 pipe. Besides roots, they fought a
dense sandstone substrate and undocumented utilities
without interrupting service to homeowners.

WHAT TROUBLE LOOKS LIKE

Project manager Casey Hill uses the Bor-It tool with a 3-inch
backreamer bit attached to an industrial drill to widen the channel
for feeding the pullback cable to the chain. The communications
conduit and two electric lines pass above him.
Throughout the project, Johnsons plumbing crew
arrived once or twice a day to unblock clogged lines and
keep the sewers flowing while his sewer team located
problem areas using an inspection system from Vu-Rite
Video Inspection Systems and NaviTrack locator from
RIDGID. When roots blocked the cameras progress, they
opened a path with a RIDGID K-1500 sewer and drain
cleaner, but even that bound up on some occasions when
trying to pass through the drilled holes.

Workers pipe burst 200 feet of mains in the first park,
then 1,600 feet in the second, and another 2,000 feet in
the third. At each residence, they excavated the sewer
using shovels, cut a hole in the sewer, and ran temporary
laterals from the stubs under the homes to the pipe.
On the second pull in the last park while 220 feet
under three homes, two alleys and a city street progress
went from substantial to awful.
The sewer lay on sandstone under 4 feet of sand,
says Johnson. As it passed under the street for 40 feet,
the compacted roadbed was like granite around the pipe.
Pressure on the 3,000-psi ram increased to more than
2,900 psi as the bursting head struggled to push the
restricting soil aside. At 15 feet under the street, the head
stopped moving as the ram 200 feet away began pushing
into the timber cribbing.

Johnson killed the power and called Pipe Genie
inventor Gerry Robinson, who recommended spreading
the pulling force over a larger area and setting the vertical
timbers deeper.
FULL STOP
Naturally, it was a Friday afternoon, and those homes
were still on a disconnected sewer, says Johnson. We
pulled out the ram, brought in a sewage pump and bypassed
the liquid to another main downstream.
Johnson visited a steel scrap yard Saturday morning
to look for two 6-foot I-beams and a 4-by-6-foot by
5/8-inch-thick resistance plate. Meanwhile, another team
member widened the pulling pit to accommodate the
larger plate. Then, they jackhammered two holes in the
sandstone at the head of the pit before setting the I-beams
and plate with an excavator.
The pull resumed at 4 p.m. with the pressure on the
ram hovering near maximum capacity. As soon as the
head crossed the street, the pressure dropped to 900 psi,

which is barely more than an idle, says Johnson. The last
180 feet went flawlessly.
Throughout the job, Johnson used Plasson electrofusion
45-degree saddle wyes on laterals and M.T. Deason Co.
electrofusion couplings to join the separate pulls of pipe.
Obtaining a variance from the states Construction
Industries Board to use the saddles took three months
because the International Plumbing Code prohibits them
on private laterals.
They made all the difference in efficiency and integrity,
says Johnson. We delivered a root-proof product with no
seams or rubber gaskets.
SUCCESS TAKES A TURN
Another uneventful run of 500 feet followed. After that,
I was convinced my men and the ram were bulletproof,
says Johnson. Our next pull was 120 feet at a depth of 4.5
feet with a 90-degree turn centered under a mobile home.
Although risky, I decided to pull through the 90. The pulling
pit was 50 feet from the elbow.
The job went smoothly until the 2.75-inch chain that
was pulling the head tried to line up with the ram, came
out of the elbow and lodged somewhere in the sandstone.
The pull stopped.

With only 18 inches of clearance under the home,
workers increased the headroom by spending two days
digging a 4-foot-deep trench to the elbow. Unable to leave
the pipe running through a backyard, a privacy fence and
into the street, they severed it at the entry pit and relocated
it. They also removed the ram, which allowed the sewer to
flow while they worked.
Once the trench was completed, the crew used a Robert
Bosch Tool Corporation rotary chipping hammer with a
spade bit to excavate through the sandstone to the main.
They used the camera to locate where the chain left the
pipe and chipped down to it.
At one point, it ran under a structural support beam.
The park manager sent his maintenance man to relocate
the beam. Every delay took half a day, says Johnson. The
guys finally freed all of the chain and found the pulling
head another 20 feet away under the home.

Using shovels and the chipping hammer, the crew
excavated a second pulling pit behind the home and aligned
it with the lateral. After requesting a utility locate, they
exposed a marked communications conduit but nicked
one of two undocumented electrical lines. A few sparks

The next morning, project manager Casey Hill drilled
a 1.5-inch pilot hole from the second pulling pit to the
elbow excavation to feed the pullback cable to the chain.
His tool, a Hydro Bore from Pipe Genie Mfg., achieved
20,000 pounds of pushing power with a high-pressure Hot and Cold

dential market grow considerably since opening in 2003.

the plumbing company is owned by sisters Connie and
Joan DePaepe.
Connie serves as managing officer for the company and
has a C36 California Plumbing Contractor License. She is
a hands-on operator out in the field, working on customer
relations at all levels. Her license is for above-ground plumb-
ing and for sewer and drain services. Joan handles the
important duties in the office, including accounting.
American Drain Works, based in Culver City, California,
offers services on water heaters, faucets, and toilets as well
as sewer and drain work, and gas and
water piping.

Q: How have you grown

your customer base?
Case
STUDIES CONNIE: I had been in sales prior to this
business, and from the beginning, we
have been tracking and documenting
every single phone call. We want to know
where our business and referrals are com-
ing from. This tells me what the custom-
ers are looking for. What has kept us
growing is following up with the cus-
tomer, showing up on time, leaving things
clean, and then sending the invoice and
a handwritten thank-you note.

We pretty much stay within a 5- to 10-mile radius in
our area using 13 appropriate zip codes.
Everybody seems to be looking for
the local plumber where they can
really know you. There are a lot
of us out there who are really
good at what we do, and our
customers depend on us.
Connie DePaepe
Q: With so much competition out there, what kind
of company offers the biggest competition for you?
CONNIE: That would be other small companies who offer
the same personal service we provide. Customers are
looking for personal service. I dont think the larger
companies and franchises are as popular as some might
think. I just dont think the residential customers connect
as well.
Everybody seems to be looking for the local plumber
where they can really know you. There are a lot of us out
there who are really good at what we do, and our cus-
tomers depend on us.
Q: How do you and your full-time employee
work together and with customers?
CONNIE: I have found that customers want to meet me.
They are intrigued that I am a woman plumber and this
is a women-owned business.

My employee, Lalo Montes, is very experienced and
has worked for a larger company. He shares with me the
things he has seen and done. I show him how I work, and
he mirrors that. We absolutely learn from each other.
With every new customer, I will go out on a job ini-
tially to see what the issue is and talk with the customer
so he or she has an understanding of what the options
are. I may do the work or arrange for Montes to follow
up. He is very well-received with our customer base.
Depending on the size of a job, we might need to bring
in our part-time technician, who sometimes will have 32
or more hours in a week. If we need more help, we have
subcontractors we can include.
Q: What are some of the challenges you face
in the area your company is located?
CONNIE: The biggest problem in Los Angeles and the county
is taking care of and maintaining vehicles. You have to
secure your service equipment and that is very costly and
difficult. My vehicles have been broken into, and service
vans have been stolen.
We have two trucks now, and they are parked in a
secure, gated location. Trying to find affordable storage
is the biggest challenge when it comes to adding vans,
otherwise I could grow this company.
Q: What advice would you give to other
plumbers who are in highly populated regions?
CONNIE: First, love what you do. If you have a passion for
your work, it will show. The customer is completely over-
whelmed when they have a big problem, so listen to the
customer even if you know what the problem is. That way,
you can understand them better, and you can offer a solu-
tion they can understand.
The biggest mistake is to leave a job in a messy con-
dition. Always remember that customers are looking for
that personal service.

Get More Out of Your Jetter
Understanding how nozzles work will help you
clean more efficiently and effectively By Jim Aanderud
W
aterjetting can solve a lot of problems, but simply
owning one doesnt solve anything if you dont
know how to properly use it.
Understanding nozzles and how they work is a key step
to getting the most out of your jetter. Knowing the proper
use of each nozzle will ensure that you always select the right
one for each job. There should be no guessing when selecting
a nozzle for cleaning operations. Nozzles are designed for
specific cleaning applications. If they are not used for their
intended purposes, then they wont be as effective.
In order to understand nozzles, contractors must first
understand the relationship between pressure and flow ratio.
In general drain cleaning and debris removal, you want low
pressure and high flow. As debris accumulates, you want
sufficient flow to move the material down the line.
As you move into harder material such as encrustation,
mortar or even solidified grease you want to operate at
a higher pressure and lower flow to dislodge the material.
Keep in mind that a single nozzle is seldom sufficient.

You need to change nozzles as conditions change. For
example, once encrustation and mortar is removed
from the pipe wall, you need to switch to a nozzle that
can move the material to the downstream manhole to
be vacuumed out.
Many cleaning operators have a favorite nozzle that
they use in a variety of conditions. Just because it cleans
well in one situation, they assume that it will work in
every other situation, but that is certainly not the case.
Cleaning strategies
Jet trajectory is critical to nozzle selection. Jet
angles in the 30 to 45 degree range are ideal for cleaning
pipe walls. However, they provide minimal thrust
and are unable to move the debris down the line.
Jet angles in the 0 to 10 degree range are primarily
designed for thrust to propel a nozzle up the line.
Most penetrators will have jet angles in this range
because they are designed to shoot up the line as fast
and as forcefully as possible to punch
through a root blockage. These angles
are also the most efficient for moving
debris.
A jet in the 15 to 20 degree range can
clean the pipe wall, propel the nozzle and
move debris, but using two nozzles for
each job would be more efficient.
Many of todays nozzles incorporate
a combination of jet angles to perform
multiple functions simultaneously. They
can clean the pipe wall and move debris
while providing the thrust necessary to
perform these tasks.
As part of a regular maintenance plan,
plumber Anthony Steiger secures the jetter
line after successfully cleaning a customers
lateral line.

pumped through the adjacent municipal lines.
When selecting a nozzle, consider the type of cleaning
you will be doing. Are you clearing blockages, cleaning
the radiuses of the pipe walls, moving heavy sediment,
removing grease or roots, or eliminating tuberculation
and mineral deposits? Each of these requires a different
type of nozzle:
Breaking blockages: Penetrating nozzles have a
single function: to shoot up a line and break through
a blockage. Their low-degree jet pattern delivers
maximum thrust to provide as much penetrating
power as possible. Most penetrators also have forward
jets, which increase penetrating effectiveness.
Cleaning debris: Nozzles that move debris down
the line also have a low-degree jet pattern. Some of
these nozzles will incorporate multiple angles, but
their primary function is to move heavy sediment

Radius cleaning: Radius cleaning is required when
there are bends in the pipe. Many nozzles tend to
leave debris along the inside of the radius. Effective
cleaning under these conditions requires a nozzle
with 45-degree jets to knock debris off the pipe wall.
This process must be followed with a 10-degree
nozzle to move the debris out of the pipe.
Grease cleaning: There are various nozzle types
that work effectively for cutting through and
removing grease from a pipeline. Spinning nozzles
are the best option for these jobs. Most spinning
nozzles incorporate 30- to 75-degree jets for cutting
and 10- to 20-degree jets for thrust. Chain flails
also work well to knock the grease from the pipe
wall. After a chain flail has been used, a cleaning
nozzle is needed to move the grease down the line.
Light to medium roots: Slow rotational spinning
nozzles work well with light to medium roots. Older
rotating nozzles tended to spin too fast and didnt
work as effectively as the slow-spinning nozzles
available today.
Heavy roots: Chain flails and root saws are the
most effective tools when dealing with heavy roots.
If possible, a camera should be used in conjunction
with these mechanical nozzles to ensure the pipe
is not being damaged.
Nozzle categories
Nozzles are broken down into three tiers based on
efficiency for moving water.
Tier-one nozzles have orifices drilled out in different
locations and sizes, and at different angles, which can
mean inefficient flow dynamics and less performance.
When the water enters the nozzle, it hits into the back of
its interior and then bounces out in the opposite direction
while exiting through the drilled holes. During this process,
a considerable amount of energy is lost. These nozzles are

drilled jet holes wear out and the nozzle becomes ineffective.
Tier-two nozzles are more expensive, but they have
better flow dynamics than tier one nozzles. They have
replaceable inserts that straighten the jet streams as they
exit the nozzle. When the jet orifices wear out, these nozzles
can be restored to their full operating capacity by replacing
the inserts.
Tier-three nozzles are designed to maximize the
efficiency of water flow. Flow dynamics are designed to
significantly increase the water pressure exiting the jets.
Under certain conditions, these nozzles can increase
cleaning efficiency. Their only downside is they can be very
costly. However, the cost is usually offset by increased
efficiency.
Nozzle design has made huge strides in the past few
years. By understanding how nozzles work and staying
informed about available technology, youll be able to clean
lines more efficiently and effectively.

Drain Cleaning

Inspection in Hill City, Kansas, was recently called to a
middle school lunchroom to camera lines in the kitchen
area that were plugging on a monthly basis. He was informed
that the line had recently been cleaned with a jetter, and
they wanted to camera the mainline so they could locate
and map for future reference. While running water in the
branch lines to mark where the lines tied into the main,
water began backing up on the floor.
Solution: Critchfield brought in a wet-dry vac and Bullfrog

with the vacuum until it would take water in the drain. He
then cleaned all of the 2-inch lines in the kitchen while
students ate lunch.

Diego was called to investigate what was causing a 10-inch-

Problem: A major casino-resort facility in Nevada had
developed unmanageable grease and odor problems in the
drainlines and discharge lines going to the central grease
trap. To resolve line blockage, the facility had a contract with
a major drain cleaning company that visited daily to snake
clogged lines. In addition, the 5,000-gallon primary grease
trap that is located in the lower level required weekly pumping
at a cost of $1,500 per week. Odor problems in the upper
floors were so severe that the exhaust hood fans in the food
preparation areas operated 24 hours a day in an effort to
reduce drainline gas production. Despite these efforts, drainline
gas production and bad odors were still being detected over
food preparation odors.
Solution: In order to remove the abundance of roots that had
gathered in the pipes, they had to cut them out. The Pneumatic
Micro-Cutter from Nu Flow Technologies was used to cut
away at the roots. Once complete, the roots could be pulled,
and the cluster was revealed to be 15 feet long.
Result: After the roots were removed from the inside of the pipe,
the customer decided to install a CIPP liner inside the storm
drain to prevent any future roots from penetrating through the
