INTRODUCTION

A sport is a game, competition, or activity needing

physical effort and skill that is played or done according

to rules, for enjoyment and/or as a job - Cambridge

Dictionary.

Sports has been an integral part of man. It develops his

several aspects: his recreational, mental, physical,

personal and social beings. It is a medium where men, women,

and the youth get to experience it as a training opportunity

to embody leadership, fair-play, camaraderie and more.

In addition, it encourages a sense of competition

showcasing each individuals skills and abilities. It also

provides amusement to both athletes and sports enthusiasts.

Over time, countless tournaments and sports meets have

been brought about. These sporting events are established by

several athletic associations.

Ozamiz Citys very own Physical Fitness and Sports

Development Council (PFSDC) has been developing and

promoting sports programs within the city. It affiliates

with the national organization, the Philippine Sports

together with other local associations to encourage wide

appreciation and participation of citizens in sports.

To amplify the councils purpose, all fifty-one (51)

barangays in the city have basketball courts and

multipurpose halls since the project of the present

administration is into establishment of multipurpose halls.

There are thirty-two (32) volleyball courts located in

twenty-one (21) barangays, four (4) tennis courts; and one

golf link, the Mt. Malindang Golf Course a nine-hole golf

course located in Brgy. Bagakay.

The city also has four (4) gymnasiums; one (1) public

and three (3) are privately owned. It also has three (3)

privately owned tennis courts and one (1) that is public.

There are also four (4) private swimming pools, eight (8)

fitness gyms, and two (2) billiard halls.

According to the Ozamizs PFDSC coordinator, Mrs. Nancy

Paglinawan, Ozamiz City has been participating in

tournaments and sports events both locally and nationally.

In fact, it has been excelling in various sports like

basketball, lawn tennis, arnis, sepak takraw and more.

Unfortunately, the city lacks the consistency of its

technologies, and facilities to cater every wants and needs

of the inhabitants. It is undoubtedly evident in the city

nowadays.

Thus, this paper is materialized solely to design a

sports complex and cater the needs of the inhabitants. The

project provides facilities that would satisfy the users.

A sports complex is an integration of several sports

facilities. It is a place which hosts sporting events for

competition and entertainment. Moreover, it is a haven for

athletes and sports enthusiasts.

The Proposed Ozamiz City Sports Complex would consist of

a multipurpose sports arena which houses indoor sports

facilities, grandstand, gymnasium, track-and-field oval,

outdoor sports facilities, resto cafe or snack bar, parking

building, vehicular and pedestrian zones.

1.1 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Early stadia trace their history back to VIII Century BC

around a rudimentary athletics track shaped as an elongated

U. Starting and finish line were at the two ends and there

was one only 192 m long and 32 m wide track. Along the

stand with two separate entrances for judges and for

spectators was built for them to watch and cheer throughout

the competition.

As sports became more popular in Greece, many similar

stadia were built but were used for horse and chariot

racing. The facilities soon started to play important roles

within the location.

During the Roman age, the amphitheater came to life.

Levels were built on elevated position often with

superimposed rows. The elliptical layout fully encompassed

the amphitheater and spectators could focus only on the

arena, the central area where gladiators fights were held.

In parallel with the transition from Greece to the Roman

world, the circus was born between the II and the I Century

BC. Circuses were usually built around the walls and

adjacent to the imperial palace, in order to ensure direct

access for the emperor and his court. These circuses were

used for public activities becoming an integral part of the

city life.

The sole purpose of the first-generation stadia was

basically to host a large amount of spectators in an age

television and sports events could be watched live. These

facilities had no architectural value, uncomfortable and

provisions of facilities were basic.

Today, modern olympic games were inspired from the model

established by the Greeks stadion. Due to the vast

acceleration of the world, and with the technological

advancement,stadia were equipped with facilities for

spectators in order to improve their comfort and to host

several sports.

The facilities were made more accessible, safe, and

comfortable which drew more diversified and heterogeneous

spectators.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Ozamiz City has been a home of many athletes and sports enthusiasts. It trains

several athletes, from respective sports events, and sends them to compete to different

cities or municipalities outside Ozamiz. At the same time, it hosts several athletic meets

and tournaments competing different cities and municipalities. Also it has facilities that

people use for amusement and recreation.

However, the researcher observed and even the city sports council admitted that the

city lacks its maintenance in COMPLEX 2017 -2018

terms of the form and function. In fact, it is evident in the city that the sports facilities are

not properly kept in good condition.

In addition, it lacks facilities that would cater these events in one place. Throughout

the years, the sports events in Ozamiz had been hosted in different parts in the city, not in

a specific place.

Thus, the researcher comes up with a study to propose an Ozamiz City Sports

Complex. This study aims to provide a good and high capable facilities that is sensitive to

the needs of its target users, and also to promote local economic progress in the province.

Furthermore, the researcher aims to answer the following

questions:

1. What are the sports complex concepts and principles that will be applied in order

to arrive at a sound site planning and design?

2. What would be the feasible methods that would be economically beneficial to the

location?

3. How should the sports complex spaces be integrated into the master plan?

4. How do the structures accommodate to the needs of the inhabitants, and serve its

purpose as a sports destination?

5. What are the environmental issues and concerns that need to be addressed?

THE STUDY

The principal purpose of this study is to come up with a design of sports complex

that would be able to have satisfactory and functional structures for the users. The

study shall give importance in designing the sports complex

that can be able to serve and understand the impact of

architecture.

Architects, practicing architects, and those in the

academe has a big role in finding the solution and

expansion of certain design theories that helps in searching

for better design which responds to the needs of the users:

1.3.1 Province of Misamis Occidental

This project would house provincial meets and tournaments which in turn

would boost the provinces economy and tourism.

1.3.2 Local Government of Ozamiz

The approval of this proposal would provide additional reference for the

locality. In addition, the fulfillment of this project surely attracts more development

projects in the future consequently adding up to the citys/municipalitys development

and economic progress.

_____ and their reclamation have great potential in becoming commercial areas that

attract more business investors and may add to the citys sources of income. There will

also be an increase in local employment opportunities and more jobs available in the area.

1.3.4 Athletes and Sports Enthusiasts

Realization of this project would be very helpful to tend and satisfy the needs

and wants of the athletes and sports enthusiasts.

1.3.5 Students

The proposal will bring awareness to the aspirants to

the architectural profession regarding the important factors

to be considered in the planning and designing of spaces.

1.3.6 Future Researchers

The encounter of this kind of planning and design will serve as their

background experience and will aid them in the future at the time they confront a similar

problem.

1.4 SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The study is focused only to the Proposed Ozamiz City Sports Complex, the master

plan of spaces, its components and architectural concept.

The research condition will be limited to the periphery area of Ozamiz City,

particularly Brgy. _______. The researcher will limit his data gathering for first hand data

and interviews.

The researcher does not go into detailed engineering

works. All detailed structural, electrical, mechanical,

electronics and plumbing plans are beyond the researchers

capacity. The researcher only engaged to their

conceptualization.

1.6 PROJECT OBJECTIVES

The project objectives of the study are to identify the key factors that influence the

current and future feasibility of the sports complex and understand the impact on the

community served by the sports complex.

These are the following objectives the researcher would like to achieve:

1.6.1 General Objectives

1.6.1.1 Propose a sports complex in Brgy. ______, Ozamiz City

1.6.1.2 Plan and develop the proposed Ozamiz City sports complex in a

manner consistent with the adopted goals and policies of the national code and city

council.

Transform Ozamiz City into a prime sports destination in Northern

Mindanao

1.6.2 Specific Objectives

1.6.2.1 Provide a sports complex with facilities of high quality capable of

serving the city and the neighboring areas.

1.6.2.2 Preserve and enhance the citys status as a premier tourist

destination.

1.6.2.3 Ensure the sports complexs long term use and efficiency.

1.6.2.4 Encourage the development of sports and recreation in the

community.

1.6.2.5 Comply with international standards for

operational safety and efficiency.

1.6.2.6 Come up a condition were convenience, safety,

environmental impacts, and design quality will be suitable

for future airport needs.

1.7 DESIGN OBJECTIVES

These are the following design objectives the researcher would like to achieve:

1.7.1 Ensure users comfort and convenience in all plans by considering factors.

1.7.2 Promote ample and convenient access to the facilities.

1.7.3 Provide sufficient parking for peak levels of demand that is efficient and

user-friendly.

and facilities that will stimulate the senses of the users.

1.7.5 Create visual patterns through order and arrangement.

1.7.6 Protect natural systems.

1.8 HYPOTHESES/ASSUMPTIONS

The researcher believed that the sports complex can

truly be strategically planned and developed and give good

quality of services. The proposed sports complex will

introduce systems that will serve its ultimate purpose. The

researcher also assumed about growth predictions that will

go beyond for future developments.

1.9 PROJECT AND DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

These are the following factors that need to be considered in planning and designing

the proposed Ozamiz City sports complex:

1.9.1 Orientation

Proper placement, arrangement and positions of zones with respect to the solar,

wind and topographic orientation, the relationship of the facilities with the street, vehicle

access and parking, direction and wind speed, location of the shade elements such as

trees should be of consideration.

1.9.2 Space Planning

Zones and spaces should be taken into account. Spaces should be strategically

be utilized and integrated in the plan with respect to the function, size, flow, and physical

limitations of the users.

1.9.3 Aesthetics

The aesthetics are usually accomplished by the texture, color, shape, type of

material, symmetry and simplicity of the repeated design.

1.9.4 Articulation

Formation of clear and distinct features of the facilities are to be considered.

They should be clear, vibrant and expressive.

1.9.5 Accessibility

Access to zones should be of critical consideration whether private, semi-

private or public. It should also be accessible especially to the PWDs.

1.9.6 Waste Management

Waste disposal should be of consideration from inception to the final disposal.

1.9.7 Safety and Security

It should be the primary consideration of the project to ensure the safety and

security of the users and of the staff and operators of the facilities.

materials is significant to conserve energy and protect the structure. Building materials

should be cost-efficient at the same time durable.

1.9.9 Expansion Potential

The project should be planned in its ultimate form, with reasonable allowance

for future growth and changes.

1.9.10 Walking Distances

Users should have a walking travel throughout the respective zones of the

sports complex. Obstructions and misapplications of spaces should be avoided.

1.9.11 Flow and Circulation

Zones and spaces should be planned in a manner that the users will have ample

and convenient flow and access.

1.9.12 Environmental Concerns

Environmental impacts should be planned with respect to existing and proposed

land use and noise on surrounding residents, wildlife, air and water quality, any historical

features or other features identified by the Department of Environmental and Natural

Resources (DENR).

1.9.13 Wildlife Hazards

The potential for any wildlife hazards, including the risk of bird strikes, should

be well evaluated.
