Abstract In this study, fatigue behaviors of rectangular plates having circular internal delamination
have been investigated. The experimental studies have been associated with the structural health
monitoring (SHM) system and the passive thermography. Based on experimental results, a finite
clement model has been proposed to evaluate the number of cycles corresponding to final fatigue
failure.
Key words fatigue failure, delamination, SHM, passive thermography
L. Introduction
Interlaminar delamination is one of the most commonly seen failure phenomena in
composite laminates, and such failure may significantly reduce the residual strength and the critical
load-carrying capacity of laminated structures. Specifically, the existence of the delamination may
cause growth of the delamination under in-plane loads, which could lead to ultimate failure of the
composite laminates. In tension load cases the delamination will not grow and will result in a small
stiffness degradation to the structure, In compression, delaminations can allow a sublaminate to
buckle which further drives to the delamination growth, This mechanism of failure, if not accounted
for properly, can lead to uncontrolled delamination growth and premature failure of the structure,
Therefore, predicting the delamination growth can be critical to determining the structural integrity.
Several studies have investigated the growth of flat plates and in shells with axisymmetric
delaminations [1-3]
‘There are mainly two approaches available for studying interlaminar delamination growth
of composite laminates. The first approach is related to damage mechanics, in which the interface
enclosing the delamination is modeled with a damageable material and delamination occurs when a
damage variable reaches its maximum value [4,5]. ‘The second approach, perhaps the most
important and popular approach, is based on the methodology of fracture mechanics [6-8]. In
assessing a possible delamination growth with the second approach, it is generally accepted that one
‘may analytically or numerically determine the total strain energy release rate or the stress along the
delamination front, and compare these results with some critical values used as criteria,

nI the present work, static and dynamic compression tests were conducted on a unidirectional glass
fiber reinforced polymer matrix and on a woven roving glass polymer matrix composites, at
different load rate, The deformation behavior of structures and failure modes were discussed.
For the purposes of this work, a special attention was focused to account for the effect of R. (a,
Sass) ratio. Two special cases are discussed in details, i.
- Tension-compresion cases (R<0)
