AMHARA national regional states planed for growth and transformation plan(GTB)to attain 100
percent clean water supply services for both urban and rural people which requires drilling of
many water wells. in addition, the national and regional governments went to promote irrigation
to mitigate the effort of climate variability and drought to secure the people of the country and/or
the region from poverty and hunger .expansion of small scale irrigation has given priority while
due attention has been given to medium and large scale irrigation to the extent possible.

Even though, the national and/or regional government of the country/region gives attention on
the country/region development by developing water recourses as it mentioned in the growth and
transformation plane(GTP),there are limited number of government or private contractures
which have been participated on these water sector development, even if there are encouraging
national and regional development polices ,strategies and proclamations that favors the private
sector to play key role in the national development. Taking the favorable conditions in to
account, TIS ISAT water works plc is established manly by GAFAT endowment in

Situation analysis
Company, s annual plan performance
TIS ISAT water works plc has planned to perform deep wells drilling, 90 shallow wells drilling,
pump tests and construction of two water supply and one irrigation projects in the budget year in
addition, the company has planned to generate total revenue of EB 34,322,000.00 by expending
EB 24,887,900.00 and expected to get EB 7,434,100.00 gross profit including ABAY Bank
profit dividend of EB 48,000.00. Since TANA Flora PLC and ABAY insurance S.C financial
performance is expected to register loss and MEKEDELA Construction machinery is under re-
establishment process in 2013, their profit dividend is not included into the companys annual
profit plan

According to the plan, the company has been doing drilling of 6 deep wells,80 shallow wells,
one pump installation and performing two water supply and one irrigation projects at different
performance level. as a result of this, the company has generated total revenue of
EB27,674,772.09 by expending EB of 19,829,508.53 and obtained growth profit of
EB7,845,263.56.from this we can deduced that revenue cost ratio is birr 1:0.75.the reason for
relative for relatively low profit compared to list year are vehicles purchased depreciation cost,
considerable number of new employs hiring, cost of material procured for dara water supply
partly considering AMHARA bureau of water resource development as the main Clint of the
company, the preparation of the physical year plan is done with respect to the companys
potential and working capacity.

AMHARA bureau of water resource development bureau has envisaged increasing the rural
water supply coverage from 67% to 80% and urban water supply from 74% to85%,regional
water supply coverage from 68% to 83.76% and modern irrigation from 42,000 hectares of land

OVER ALL INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

How I get in to the company

The university- industry linkage (UIL) and community service is planned to create a good
interaction between universities and industries, and also create students that have the capability
of facing and solving practical problems. Because of these reasons BAHIR Dar University has
given a great deal attention to this program in helping students, starting from searching
companies that are willing to be part of this program to giving essential documents and
schedules.
I get in to the company by sending a letter, which was given to us by the UIL office, to
the companys newly built in BAHIRDAR on KEBELE 16 around BAHIR DAR academy
school called TIS ISAT water works plc. Soon the company positively accepted my request to
work as an intern student.
I decided to work on this company for reasons; first the companys site was located in my
hometown DEJEN. The other reason is, because the company is newly built so that I can follow
works from the beginning and it is well organized in which I can learn a lot from the experienced
engineers and other staff members.

So that, I choose TIS ISAT water works plc .when I went to the company ,I contact the company
manager he asked me clear information about the internship program & give some information
about the company , and he accept me pleasantly and he introduce me to the present site engineer
MAREG and other staff members,

The working section that I have been working in the company

Starting from my arrival in to company. I have been assigned in the site, as site engineer in
DHAWEDIH site, DHAWEDIH is part of north AMHARA region around WELDEYA. Out of
the two main section of the company working section I have been working in the water supply
and distribution section. Since working in the site provides much opportunity to learn and
develop practical skill and upgrade theoretical knowledge,

Introducing the site

DHAWEDIH is located in north WELLO and branch of GUBALAFTO WEREDA. it shares border
with GUBARGA KEBELE to the north, ADAMIE KEBLE to the east, BADEDA KEBELE to the south
and JENETOBER to west. it occupies a total area of 2606 square kilo meter and cover around

The work piece or work tasks I have been executing

The work task I have been executing as an assistance site engineer and consultant and also other
working sector such as;

Discussing on reading and design problems and giving a solution

Supervising the work that have been done

Checking the mix ratio of concrete

Controlling in such of pre casting concrete

Controlling of each measurement

Checking pipe trench excavation

Figure 4 Checking pipe trench excavations

FACULTY OF CIVIL AND HYDRAULICS ENGINEERING

Internship report by GENET ALEMU 2008

The procedures I have been using while performing my work

task
I have been used some technical procedures in performing my work tasks like the following

-discus with site engineer about what things are done in the site

-receive data from my advisor

-analyze the task before starting to execute

-proceed executing .if complicated I will ask my advisor or other site engineer to give me a help
how to proceed it.

-I have been also cross-check my work as possible

While during my internship period I have been following such a procedure like before all I have
been ask the site engineer what will do and discus some about it and related works. Then on the
time of working I will be there and look each and every activities

-what materials and design criterias are used

And I take note on my note book.

System Design Criteria

Source of water
The source of water for the project areas there is a borehole. The boreholes for the site are drilled
inside the site compound.

Pipe line
Pipeline represents more than 50% of the total investment cost of a water supply system. Therefore,
selection of the right type of pipe is important.

FACULTY OF CIVIL AND HYDRAULICS ENGINEERING

Internship report by GENET ALEMU 2008

Pressure in pipe line

The static pressure in pipeline must be less than the pipe nominal pressure rating. In case of long
pipe where risk are expected, due attention must be given to the pipe material and water hammer
analysis

Flow velocity
The flow velocity should not be scouring and abrasive where the e problem does have negative
effects at the inner walls of the pipe. In addition it should not allow silting and high detention
time in the pipe due to low velocity. Therefore, the minimum flow velocity should be not less
than 0.5m/s and maximum flow velocity should not more than 2m/s during peak hour flow in the
system.

Selection of pipe material

The suitability of any pipe type in a given situation depend on the market, cost, available
diameter & pressure class, ease of construction and repair, carrying capacity and susceptibility to
corrosion or mechanical damage.

Trench depth of pipe

The criteria governing the depth of which pipes are laid are, on the one hand, easy maintenance
and avoidance of excessive earth pressure and live load due to traffic. In these respects, the
following criteria should have been adapted:

Pipes laid in trenches in the soil should have a normal minimum cover 1m depth. Pipes laid in
rocky condition may have a minimum cover of 60cm, or could be laid surface if security an
anchorage concerns are properly addressed Where a minimum cover cannot be achieved a buried
pipeline will be encased in a concrete surround. In areas where the pipe is subjected to vehicular
traffic, the minimum depth of cover to provide is 1.2m above top of pipe.

Figure 7 Excavation of trench depth of pipe

How good I have been during executing my work tasks

On the first days, I was not confident even when I was given small tasks to execute. Gradually I
build up my confidence by observing and learning how tasks can be executed in the site and
office. Through time I showed up gradual performance improvements. The goodness of my
internship period in performing the work tasks are: - I accepted the rules and regulation of the
company, - I regularly attained at work place, - I Work my tasks effectively, that were given by
the company and university mentor/writing weekly reports. I was assigned the tasks of
conducting a site engineer emphasize my ability to work in Varity of setting and I was contact
with many engineer and office to gain new knowledge by per forming tasks, working on

FACULTY OF CIVIL AND HYDRAULICS ENGINEERING

Internship report by GENET ALEMU 2008

projects, and completing as an internship assignment what was good, what could have been
better.

Problems that challenges me while performing my work task

In the company side there was problems such as

Total wells planned to be drilled in the year 2014 in the region is less than by 140 wells

compared to 2013 planned, whereas number of rigs are doubled in 2014 as compared to

2013.this may cause severe market problem on water drilling companies.

Water well drilling and water works constriction may not be directly award nor floated on

newspaper as early as possible in 2014 physical year.

To fully operate the donated one deep and two shallow well drilling rings, there are a

requirement of support truck, light vehicles, tools and equipments and working capitals,

which the company cant afford financially, unless otherwise additional capital will be

injected to the company.

Collateral request for advance payment and working capital shortage can have serious

effect on project implementation,

TIS ISAT water works plc may not be considered as an infant public organization to get

support from government bureaus.

Lack of the required knowledge, skill, experience and willingness of employees to work

in hardships to public interest in the company,

Finance related problems;

Delay of advance settlement,

FACULTY OF CIVIL AND HYDRAULICS ENGINEERING

Internship report by GENET ALEMU 2008

Invention adjustment and stock record \inventory counting and period of

counting\,

Purchase of different materials now and then without plan.

Previous year balance sheet account problems\account payables and

receivables,

Unable to collect revenue and receivables timely from clients.

EB 15 million loans which is not directly used to our company, the company can get only
EB 5 million for 2014 work operation which has a potential side effect on reducing the
profitability of the company by incurring loan principal and interest t repayment.
While in my side I faced problems like.
I agreed with TIS ISAT water works PLC in BAHIRDAR; then after then assigned me in
DEGEN site. But the company was not starting works in there. So I have to be shift to
newly beginning project in WELDEYA DEHAWEDIH site. It was very difficult time
because I chose TIS ISAT water works PLC to assigned me in my home town GEDEN
but it was not happening rather I travel to WELDEYA, which is far from DEGIN, there
are also many problems I faced in WOLDEYA, some of them are
The site if far from the city/WOLDEYA/ to reach the site we have to travel by

car for an hour and then we have to travel by wake for 3 hours. plus the roads are

uncomfortable, there was mountains ,muds ,and thorns

There was no public transportation service to the site area from WELDEYA.

There was no residential house in the site so I rented money per month in the town.

The weather was not comfortable it was so hot

The company has no office in WOLDEYA so that we cannot get information

Since, the project is newly built we cannot get web sites or other report datas

FACULTY OF CIVIL AND HYDRAULICS ENGINEERING

Internship report by GENET ALEMU 2008

Remedial measures
In every activity of the work and walk of life there are lots of problems that we should solve
and take measurements against them. In the practice I had experienced many problems
solving mechanism and I got courage when I faced problem like

o how to prorate things and select the better one

o identify different sources of challenges

o identifying with whom can be solved

o How to defense thus challenges and promote it.

Some of the measure solutions by the company side are as follow

Aware the ANRS BOWRD to award water well drilling and water construction projects

as early as possible on the beginning of the year,

Regional government shall give guaranty to the company in order to receive advance

with our collateral,

Tries to receive procured vehicles from suppliers as soon as possible and use rental

vehicles,

Crating a public awareness on the objective, the role and duties of the companies in all

alleviating the live hood of AMHARA region,

Care has to be done to select the right candidate to employee and train and orient on the

Some of the measures I took when I came across with in evitable problems are as
follows.
Concerning to reach the site, we should have to take wake early in the morning before the

sun rises and the weather changes, and for the muds and thorns I chose suitable clothes

and shoes and I take umbrella.

Concerning to the transportation, the only way is waiting the driver to travel me when

he is free since there is no public transportation or private services,

Concerning to the residential house, I live with other intern students in a group so, that

we ranted money for class.

Concerning to the weather condition, the only available way is dressing suitable clothes,

even if its difficult

Concerning to the office, to get the available information I should have to contact with

BAHIRDAR bureau and the company manpower is new he cant give me the information

so I have to contact them presently .and contact them. So I take this measure.

Concerning to the web site there is no solution in my side.

Chapter three

Over all internship benefits

In terms of practical skills;

Actually, I was varying interesting for practical and technical jobs or tasks in the company,

basically during the stay in the university we were not familiar with the practical skills that it was

completely theoretical except some courses and availability of some laboratory and machines in

the compound, through this practice I gained too much knowledge in TIS ISAT water works

PLC and I got some practical benefits while working on this project as listed below;

It should be easy to asses me key skills and experience to determine whether I am

appropriate and motivation and patience to achieve a certain goal.

Improve relationships and communication skills by moving from department to

department in search of data and information analysis and problem solving

mechanism or alternative development skill.

I had developed behavior contract to increase my mental skills to improve my

wellness.

I know how can communicate the manager with the site engineer and labors..

I know how I can select pipes.

I know foundation excavation

I know cement water ratio

I was also leaned in reading plans and taking measurements , construction

equipments , leveling device etc

Supervising others the essential skills;

Pre assignment review

Making the transition

Responsibility of a supervisor

Setting goals

Planning for success

Listening skills

Asking questions

Giving feed back

Ask for what you want giving information

In terms of upgrading my theoretical knowledge;

The practice helped me in reinforcing the theoretical knowledge I already had and gathered
during lecture from different teachers and courses. I can say that we have been given too much in
theory for all courses by our teachers even through there where courses that we skip or pass
touching the highlights due to lack of time and due to lack of course and time management.
Generally it was a great experience in enhancing my theoretical knowledge further from what I
gathered in the campus. Some are as follow;

Enable to extend my theoretical knowledge and skills in communication technology

study skills personal development and career development.

Internship report by GENET ALEMU 2008

Working in real and applicable project.

Problem identification and management effectiveness reality and kindness to assist

and support others. Like site formal, students, etc

I learned how to work out my plan inner character traits and what next year will

have. Generally the opportunity to see the real work of environment.

From participation will gain an insight in to how my own thoughts are developed. It

looks at the way I think the bosses in which I gather information and gives me an

opportunity to learn and discourage new.

Mastering emotional intelligence

Managing my emotions at work

Taking the emotional change out of giving and receiving negative feedback.

How not to let a dislike if a conflict leads to avoid giving feedback or

conforming staff issues. How not to get defensive.

Interpersonal communication skills

Individuals often learn different things through communication. For any individual,
communication is an important way of learning, which can be defined formally as the act,
process, or experience of gaining knowledge or skills. Communication and the subsequent
learning help individual specially engineers move from novices to experts and allow them to gain
new professional knowledge and abilities.

Good communication is the life blood of the engineering profession. Even though, it takes many
forms, such as speaking, writing and listening, it has the following advantages.

To handle information

FACULTY OF CIVIL AND HYDRAULICS ENGINEERING

Internship report by GENET ALEMU 2008

To persuade people

To improve relationships with others

In the construction company, working with any individual peacefully was gained from once
interpersonal communication. I.e. asking open ended questions and listening effectively to the
answers in the great way to show once respect for good experience and ability.

Open ended questions encourage individuals to

Share ideas
Think

Express options

Finally, what I have observed was to communicate effectively, it is essential that I choose the
suitable medium. Selecting the right communication channel is like shopping in the right store. If
one select the wrong store, will not get the items required. Similarly, if a person selects the
wrong communication channel, will not get the result.

My internship shares me such experience like how to communicate with different groups and
professions such as sinner engineers, managers, teams, operators, the surrounding societies,
labors etc.

Especially the challenges facing me have thought me important things about how to shape,
explain, and introduce myself in relation to the nearby individual.

In terms of team playing skill

The company is newly built and most of the design works are operated manually and therefore
they need many office Engineer, project managers, site engineers and coordinators hence it
helps to develop the skill how to contact easily, and adapt with different peoples. While doing
different activity I get it is necessary to do with my friends, coordinators, managers, my advisor
and the employees of the company.

FACULTY OF CIVIL AND HYDRAULICS ENGINEERING

Internship report by GENET ALEMU 2008

I have seen that it is better to work together than alone, two peoples can work more than one can
do, it minimizes work load and helps to finish the work in a short period of time. Generally, I
have developed my team playing skill in same extent.

The amazing thing in my intern was my cooperation with my friends who work with

me in the company were work in group and before taking actions our individual

opinions are comes in to one great idea (by sharing ideas),

I also try to solve some problems in group; I spent most of my times together with

my friends who work in thus company.

In general I have developed my team work skills by

i. Treat each other; just to maintain working relationships.

ii. Encourage team members to share ideas.

iii. Get people each others

In terms of leader ship skill

I have seen the flow of leadership in the whole company especially in the office I was starting
from each employee up to the general manager. After observing the administration methods of
the responsible person of the company I develop a skill to take the responsibility for the future.

I learnt how to satisfy customer and works without any felling which makes them happy and
productive. I also develop the ability how to lead a person who is not willing to take his
responsibility and how to make him a productive worker by giving advice and other
measurements

I have try to trap some of the following good ideas about leadership skills:-

FACULTY OF CIVIL AND HYDRAULICS ENGINEERING

Internship report by GENET ALEMU 2008

1. Some constructive ideas, too much advise gives interferes with two-way communication,

yet some advice can lead to improved performance.

2. Good performance and behavior, may good performance come from the leader displays a

helpful constructive attitude and giving emotional support.

3. The main thing that I have got is that a manager or a leader is a coach, not a player.

The leader can still performs some of the tasks but the emphasis is on showing other

peoples on how to accomplish work and then motivating them to sustain their

performance. Example:-

If a team member makes a mistake, the manager does not take over, but

instead offers a constructive suggestion.

If there is, conflict between members/co-workers the manager or leader

must resolve the conflict in a good way with his problem solving method or

negotiate them.

In terms of understanding about work ethics;

In this internship report the main activities performed during the four month, I have gained many
benefits from the internship program in terms of understanding about work ethics and other
related issues and it was an experience I will never find in the classroom.

The most important, I could gain connection with employers the work with the strong

work ethic.

Communicate with the manager helps to gain useful in sights on how a good work ethic,

a willing or ability to work in the morning.

FACULTY OF CIVIL AND HYDRAULICS ENGINEERING

Internship report by GENET ALEMU 2008

I was build motivation and work habits.

I have got practical work/job disciplines that used to me after graduation like:
Punctuality: it has its own benefits

The company will be more productive

Employee will be motivated morally and financially

Bosses will have more confidence to the employee

Employee will improve industrial culture

Generally, the work ethics helps for all in the side of production aspect, quality aspect, cost
minimization, workload, machine safety and good relation between the communities in the
company.

Professional ethics refers to the standards or a set of moral principles for regulating behaviors of
a certain defined profession. In order to consider that an activity to be a profession, it should be
carried out by one who has advanced education, knowledge, and skills. Thus, for developing
healthy working environment and increase productivity, ethical work conducts are important
medium.

The following are some of the common professional ethical principles which are apply in the
design processes:

Impartiality

Transparency and openness

Integrity

Due diligence

business or gain employment in a supervisory or management role.

It will provide me with the practical skills and knowledge to satisfy plumbing

contractors license in water supply.

The construction provides me with practical skills and knowledge to undertake a range of

manual laboring tasks on building and construction sites. I learn about safe work practice.

Successful completion of the site work provides with the opportunity to be self-

employed to manage large plumping project.

To be employed as a consultant

To be employed in a supervisory position or gain employments in environments in

environmental officer with state and local regulatory authority.

Management skill (time, money, energy)

Communication skill (e.g. the ability to sell ideas, search problems and know how to

solve)

The ability to work both as part of a team and independently.

Able to plan coordinate and organize effectively.

Self-motivated and disciplined

The ability to multi task and work under pressure

Conclusion and recommendation

Conclusion
As I finished my internship program in TIS ISAT water works PLC, I get some knowledge from
the company. And also the internship program helps me to gather different things or knowledge
for the next level and To improve or update the self-confidence and to make full understanding
about the outside environment (construction site). The internship program is helps me

how to control the quality of material used in construction

know how to construct the structure

manage the works

Solve problems easily.

Observe how to manage the material used in construction.

Generally I want to say, TIS ISAT water works PLC project on DEHAWEDIH site is more or
less helps me in this internship program .the hard working of all employers and the effectiveness
of management system and the willingness of the employers to help the student what they want
to know.

TIS ISAT water works plc project is starts working in DEHAWEDIH site for reasons some are,

Currently there is no pure water supply system at the project area. Therefore at right time

constructing the project is needed to solve the shortage of water, public health

improvement, time and energy saving for women and children.

FACULTY OF CIVIL AND HYDRAULICS ENGINEERING

Internship report by GENET ALEMU 2008

The overall objective of this project is to design and implement sustainable water supply

and sanitation system for DEHAWEDIH Town by improving the quantity, quality and

level of service.

The DEHAWEDIH town people should be participated actively to facilitate the project

finished on time.

To ensure the availability of sufficient quantities of good quality water, it becomes

imperative in a society, to plan and build suitable water supply schemes, which will

provide potable water to the various sections of the community in accordance with their

demands and requirements.

Recommendation
Since I have completed my internship program under TIS ISAT water works PLC, water supply
department in DEHAWEDIH site, I would like to give a recommendation about my internship
practice from this the following is listed below,

There is no

Computer access

The company has no enough transport services for students and labors

The site if far from the city/WOLDEYA/ to reach the site we have to travel by car for an

hour and then we have to travel by wake for 3 hours. Plus the roads are uncomfortable,

there was mountains ,muds ,and thorns
