Miss Brill Characteristics Analysis

Miss Brill was typical deserted lonely middle-age lady. She did not have any spouse yet. It made
her so lonely in her age.

Miss Brill was actually quite able to show her affection even if nobody loved her. She could only
show it to the fur. On how she said that It was nice to feel it again. She had taken it out of its
box that afternoon, shaken out the moth-powder, given it a good brush, and rubbed the life
back into the dim little eyes. She was perfectly full of affection but she did not know to whom
it should be shown and given.

Miss Brill was kind of a shy lady. It was shown implicitly on how Miss Brill even did not have any
light conversation with the park visitor. Instead, she always came to the park but she did not
have any friends there. The lady was better just listening to what the other couple said rather
that talking to them. Because of this characteristic, it could lead as well that Miss Brill was
typically an introvert and queer woman. The author said and it also explained why she had
quite a queer, shy feeling at telling her English pupils how she spent her Sunday afternoons. No
wonder! Miss Brill nearly laughed out loud. She was on the stage. It means that Miss Brill was
quite clumsy and seen as awkward. She only could lie to her pupils that why she made such a
point of starting from home at just the same time each week - so as not to be late for the
performance. It says that the lady cannot talk to other even her friend about her loneliness. She
thought nobody was there for her. The feeling of insecure was also shown may be caused by
her status which was single although she was in her middle age.

People would notice her absence in the park if she had not come yet. However, she knew that
she was rejected by the society. It could be since her way of dressing. People noticed she was
old and faded. From the conversation of a young couple "But why? Because of that stupid old
thing at the end there?" asked the boy. "Why does she come here at all - who wants her? Why
doesn't she keep her silly old mug at home?" means that Miss Brill was kind of isolated by the
society as well.

Miss Brill was sensitive as well. It was showed when a young couple mocking her under their
breath and after arriving back home from the park she was cried.
She was also really imaginative lady. However, sometimes she could have a fight between
which one was the reality and which one was the illusion. Even she had a part and came every
Sunday. No doubt somebody would have noticed if she hadn't been there; she was part of the
performance after all. How strange she'd never thought of it like that before! It shown to us on
how she even built her own world.

By internalizing the characteristic of Miss Brill, I could understand on how complicated the life if
we did not have any partners or friends to share something such as our feeling, our love even
or wealth. But the most important thing is that, we cannot separate from the society. Miss Brill
even really struggled to always blend or at least joined within the society even if she was being
rejected. It was so hard for her to stay trying blending but it was the only thing she could do.
