Writing
Writing about statistics
When you write a statistic about a group of people, check if the noun is plural or singular.

If the group of people is a plural noun, use a plural verb:

80% of the students are interested in the news.

Approximately 20% of us get the news from TV.

The majority of students have access to the Internet.

Four out of ten students read a newspaper.

If the group of people is a singular noun, use a singular verb:

80% of the class is interested in the news.

About half of the class is interested in current events.
