Disinfection of Potable Water Piping system & Tanks

Location: Kuwait international Airport Terminal 2 - MPW Offices

Introduction:

Disinfectant: is an agent applied to inanimate objects to destroy, neutralize, or

inhibit the growth of disease-carrying microorganisms,

Chemical to be used is: Calcium Hypochlorite 70% active ingredient

(Available Chlorine Content) concentration in Granular Form (Disinfectant).

Formula: Ca(ClO)2.

Description: A white crystalline solid, Ca(OCl)24H2O, used as a bactericide,

fungicide, and bleaching agent .Calcium hypochlorite is used for the
disinfection of drinking water or swimming pool water.

International Specification Standard:

AWWA- B300-04: Hypochlorite. This standard describes chlorinated lime,
calcium hypochlorite, and sodium hypochlorite for use in the treatment of
municipal and industrial water supplies.
ANSI/AWWA Standard C651-92-The current industry practice for the
disinfection of potable water distribution lines
Abbreviations used in Method Statement:

1. pH which measure of degree of acidity (pH <7.0) and alkalinity (pH>7.0).

At pH 7.0 water is considered Neutral. pH is recommended to be between 7.2
to 7.6 for chlorine to be effective in achieving disinfection and oxidize
bacteria..
pH reading is measured by pH meter.

2. Free Chlorine (Cl2): Measured by photometer, is the active part to oxidize

bacteria and disinfect water.
The unit for measurements of free chlorine is mg/l (Milligram per Liter) or in
PPM (Parts Per Million) chlorine value is measured by photometer
METHOD STATEMENT:

The following is recommended sterilization procedure for water systems at

each building or tank.

a. Prior to starting work, verify system in completely flushed and clean.

Check pH which should be between 7.2 to 7.6. If not adjust using acid
(HCl) as pH- or Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) as pH+.

b. Fill existing tanks with water, calculate volume of water and prepare
amount of granular chlorine required (Dosage 50-80 mg/l). Dissolve
granular chlorine in small plastic container and pour into the water tank
as liquid. Keep adding until achieving reserve of free chlorine between
50-80 PPM in the water tank.

c. Then allow chlorinated water to pass through all associated pipe work
Until chlorine is detected at each selected outlet at concentration of at
Least 50 mg/l free chlorine reserve.

d. Leave pipe work charged for 24 hours, and test for free chlorine at the
same outlets points within the buildings .Outlets to be tested and should
have have minimum 25 mg/l free chlorine, if not procedure a-d must be
repeated.

e. When level is within this limit, thoroughly flush out with clean water
until the free residual chlorine concentration is no greater than that
present in the incoming city water or maximum 1.0 mg/l.
TESTING PROCEDURE AND REPORTS:

The following tests will be conducted and reported during the course of sterilization
procedure.

a. Testing of the free chlorine reserve & pH of the main water supply prior to
adding hypochlorite solution.

b. Testing for free chlorine reserve in the tank after addition of Hypochlorite
solution to confirm the required level of 50 to 80 PPM.

c. Testing of free chlorine reserve at selected outlets in various floors of the

building to confirm that level is 50 PPM minimum.

d. Test of free chlorine reserve at same selected outlets in the building after 24
hours which should be 25 ppm minimum.

e. Make final testing at the time flushing and after flushing to confirm the
free chlorine reserve at all selected outlets are same as the water suppliers
mains.

f. Report will be issued for every test done during each step of sterilization
procedure and all selected outlets will be clearly mentioned.

g. Bacteria Test will be done at Al Fada Co. Lab (5 Samples) and Official
Third Party Test will be done at Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research
(KISR) lab (3 Samples) after successful completion of disinfection work.

SAFETY MEASURES
- During mixing & adding of chlorine protective gloves and mouth mask will be
used.
- Warning signs will be placed on all floors bathrooms & Kitchens
- Boilers, drinking fountains & filters to be isolated.

TESTING EQUIPMENTS AND CHEMICALS:

- Chemical to be used for sterilization is calcium hypochlorite 70% in Granular form.

- Testing procedure: By using direct reading HR Chlorine photometer and pH meter.
