DIAMOND DRILLING

INTRODUCTION

Diamond drilling (diamond drilling) is one of the most widely used drilling
methods par excellence in mining activity, due to the greater information it is able
to provide to geological engineers for the discovery, verification, study and cubing
Of mineral deposits; Providing them with valuable information for the further
design of the operating system to be applied.
The principle of diamond drilling is based on the erosion or wear of geological
formations or friction rocks as an immediate effect of the rotation and thrust
pressure to which the drill or diamond crown is subjected to rock. These forces
cause abrasion or crushing of the formations into tiny particles called cuttings or
detritus, which are removed with the drilling fluids.

IMPORTANCE OF DIAMOND DRILLING

Determine zones of anomaly.
Define geology of the reservoir.
Determine areas of alteration.
Determine degree of fracturing.
Determine the mineralogy of the deposit.

DEFINITION

Diamond drilling is drilling using a diamond drill bit to drill the rock, obtaining a
control of the rock, which is extracted, registered and placed in watch cases for
proper protection and storage inside coreshak (coreshak). For drilling diamond
drills are used because the diamond is the existing material with greater hardness
and thermal conductivity on the planet, which allows it to act as a cutting tool with
great effectiveness to cut the rock that is required and to conveniently extract the
samples or cores of the mineralized deposit.
Once cut the useful section is prepared identifying targets with sample and
countersample for comparison in accredited laboratories with the necessary
requirements that the QA / QC demands to give consistency to the investigation.

INSTALLATION OF DIAMOND EQUIPMENT

The drilling equipment must be installed on a fully level platform or surface
and without loose material that may alter the normal movement of persons,
equipment or machinery.
When installing the probe at the point to be drilled, a polyethylene or
geomembrane should be placed underneath the latter to completely cover
the bottom of the probe to avoid contamination by oil, grease or additives
spills.
The platform where the work should be done, should have the regulatory
dimensions to be used with comfort.

SAMPLE RECOVERY AND RQD
The recovery of the sample is represented graphically, this being a percentage
relation between the length of the recovered sample and the length of the
perforated section.
The RQD (Rock Quality Designation), is a measure of the degree of fracture of
the rocky mass, proposed by Deere, D. (1964)
Classification Table From the RQD index, we can classify rock mass: RQD Rock
mass quality <25% very poor 25-50% poor 50-75% fair 75-90% good 90-100%
excellent

COST
In the case of diamond, the cost of the meter is more expensive, between US $
200 and US $ 250 per meter of sounding

CONCLUSIONS
Diamond drilling is one of the most used drilling methods par excellence in
mining activity.
Heavy Equipment: These are high-powered equipment with larger diameter
drilling capabilities such as PQ.
The diamond drilling will allow the extraction of the witnesses that will give
us the relevant information of the deposit.
Diamond drilling is the most costly to determine if a reservoir is
economically exploitable or non-exploitable.
Do not treat to reduce the expenses in the drilling since it depends on the
development of the project if yes
