Attendance

You are expected at your lesson every week at your assigned time, unless it is a school holiday. If you must cancel your lesson,
email Mr. Garza at least 24 hours before the lesson.

Expectations

Each student will receive one half-hour lesson or hour lesson per week. At this lesson, we will cover basic vocal technique for
solo singing at an age-appropriate level including body and breath awareness, basic piano skills, and basic music theory and ear
training skills including sight singing. Students may bring music that they would like to work on, such as musical theatre pieces,
folk songs, or songs for UIL solo and ensemble auditions. Mr. Garza can also assign them music to work on. Mr. Garza must
approve any music that a student would like to work on in their lessons and will not approve a piece that will not benefit the
students vocal health.
About Me

Juan Garza, Baritone is a native of El Paso, TX. He is recent graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University with a BM in Vocal
Performance. While at SFA, he was a student of Dr. Scott LaGraff. During his studies, Juan performed the title role in Gianni
Schicchi, Kezal in The Barterded Bride, Joe in The Most Happy Fella, and Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors. Last spring,
Juan performed the role of Mr. Ford in The Merry Wives of Windsor. In 2014, Juan was accepted as an Apprentice Artist at
Opera in the Ozarks, where he performed The Baker and The Steward in Into the Woods, and Marco in Gianni Schicchi. With the
Gilbert and Sullivan Company of El Paso, he has performed the roles of The Judge in Trial by Jury, Tom Brown in The Zoo, Don
Alhambra in The Gondoliers, Sir Rodric in Ruddigore, and Dick Deadeye in H.M.S Pinafore. Most recently, Juan is a winner of the
2017 SFA Concerto/Aria Competition and has been a four-time finalist at the Texoma Regional NATS auditions and a two-time
finalist at the Rio Grande District NATS in El Paso. Currently, Juan is a member of the Houston Grand Opera Chorus and teaches
private voice in Houston. Aside from performing, I am very passionate about teaching private voice lessons, and have taken
numerous courses in vocal pedagogy at the collegiate level. I am very excited to get to know your student and to introduce her
or him to the exciting world of solo classical voice!

Required and Suggested Materials

Students should bring a three-ring binder for organizing vocal repertoire as well as a pencil to each lesson. Students may also
wish to bring a recording device to their lessons so that they can listen back to their lessons, hear the repertoire they are
working on, and listen to their own progress. A smart phone set to silent is acceptable for recording.

Fees and Attendance

Mr. Garzas lesson fee is $15/half-hour or $30/hour. Students and parents are required to pre-pay for lessons by month. Cash
or check made out to Juan Garza is accepted. At the end of each month, students and parents should prepay for the next
month of lessons in order to secure their future lesson slots. Late payments will not guarantee that your lesson slot will
continue.

Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance. If a student cancels after the 24-hour window has passed, they must
pay for the missed lesson. If a student is planning on missing a lesson, email Mr. Garza at garzajc22@gmail.com

Availability

For Fall 2017, Mr. Garza will be teaching at Albright Middle School on Monday thru Thursday from 4:00 to 6:30 and other times
