SINGING 4 FUN Tuesday 10th October, 1.15 p.m. in Masham Church. Do you like singing
in the bath? Would you like to meet some new people? Would you enjoy singing in a
group of friendly people? No need to be able to read music. No need to sing like Pavarotti!
Anybody who would like to have a go will be welcome.
CONFIRMATION
Confirmation is about becoming a committed member of the local and worldwide Christian
family: it marks the point in the Christian journey at which you affirm for yourself the faith
into which you have been baptized and your intention to live a life of committed
discipleship. This affirmation is confirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands by the
confirming bishop. The Church also asks God to give you power through the Holy Spirit to
enable you to live in the way of Jesus.
The purpose of confirmation preparation is to ensure that those who are confirmed have a
proper understanding of what it means to live as a disciple of Christ within the life of the
Church of England. Preparation sessions encourage candidates to grow in their Christian
faith through prayer, reflection, studying the Bible, participating actively in the life of the
church and demonstrating their faith in their communities.
Any adult or young person interested in attending a confirmation preparation group please
speak to David Cleeves (01765 689255). Attending the group does not commit you to
eventual confirmation - it is an opportunity to explore the faith with the possibility of
confirmation at the end of the course.

PHILIPPIANS 3:4b-14
If anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the
eighth day, a member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of
Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness
under the law, blameless.
Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. More than
that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my
Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in or-
der that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that
comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God
based on faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of
his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection
from the dead.
Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to
make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that
I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining for-
ward to what lies ahead, I press on towards the goal.
MATTHEW 21:33-46
Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a fence
around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a watch-tower. Then he leased it to tenants and
went to another country. When the harvest time had come, he sent his slaves to the tenants
to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his slaves and beat one, killed another, and
stoned another. Again he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they treated them in the
same way. Finally he sent his son to them, saying, They will respect my son. But when
the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him and
get his inheritance. So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. Now
when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants? They said to him,
He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and lease the vineyard to other tenants
who will give him the produce at the harvest time.
Jesus said to them, Have you never read in the scriptures: The stone that the builders re -
jected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lords doing,and it is amazing in our eyes?
Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people
that produces the fruits of the kingdom. The one who falls on this stone will be broken to
pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they realized that he was speak-
ing about them. They wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowds, because they re-
garded him as a prophet.

REFLECTION Thanksgiving, thanking, expressing our gratitude, making known our
appreciation these are activities which are central to our humanity, to being made in the
image and likeness of God. When we thank someone for what he or she has said or done,
we are affirming that person, and encouraging, strengthening and cheering him or her.
Jacques Maritain said that gratitude is the most exquisite form of courtesy, but it was Isaak
Walton who spotted something yet more important about a mind predisposed to express
thanks: God has two dwellings: one in heaven and the other in a thankful heart.
So the festival of Harvest Thanksgiving bids us to remember our manners, and to give
thanks to God who created this world in love a world capable of giving every man,
woman and child enough and to spare. That so many go hungry in a world of plenty is a
reminder that the spirit of genuine gratitude is very close to the spirit of generosity: as the
old Irish proverb puts it, When the hand ceases to scatter, the mouth ceases to praise.'

DEUTERONOMY 26:1-4 & 10-11
Soon you will go into the land the Lord your God is giving you to own. You will
take it over and live in it. Then you must take some of the first harvest of crops. It
will grow from the land the Lord your God is giving you. Put the food in a basket.
Then go to the place where the Lord your God will choose to be worshiped. Say to
the priest on duty at that time, Today I declare this before the Lord your God. I
have come into the land the Lord promised to give us. He promised this to our
ancestors.
The priest will take your basket. He will set it down in front of the altar of the Lord
your God.
Now I bring you part of the first harvest from this land. Lord, you have given me
this land. Then place the basket before the Lord your God. And bow down before
him. Then you and the Levites and foreigners among you should rejoice. The Lord
your God has given good things to you and your family.
LUKE 17:11-19
Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. Travelling from Galilee to Samaria, he came
into a small town. Ten men met him there. These men did not come close to Jesus,
because they all had a harmful skin disease. But they called to him, Jesus! Master!
Please help us!
When Jesus saw the men, he said, Go and show yourselves to the priests.
While the ten men were going, they were healed. When one of them saw that he
was healed, he went back to Jesus. He praised God in a loud voice. Then he bowed
down at Jesus feet and thanked him. (This man was a Samaritan.) Jesus asked,
Ten men were healed; where are the other nine? Is this Samaritan the only one
who came back to thank God? Then Jesus said to him, Stand up and go on your
way. You were healed because you believed.
