ABSTRACT

Filipinos have, more or less, a sense of brokenness with the way things are happening
in the nation, may it be rampant poverty, high crime rates, low education, low
development, corrupt political leaders, you name it - the Philippines have it. However, it
is an error to look at these things at its face value and surmise that it is, per se, the
roots of all problems. And by the same token, strive to improve it, but to no avail
because the one that were being chopped off were just weed leaves instead of
destroying and cutting the roots
.

It is not the abovestathese minority that constitute most of our society but the average
citizen. And the current health and future fate of our nation is in the average citizens
hands

I identify one nigh-all-encompassing root of our problems: Morality, or the decline

thereof. The inherent nature of these comparatively minor problems; crime, poverty,
corruption, etc., traces their sources back to what a whole group tends to think is right,
wrong, or whether they care at all and therefore, it affects all aspects of societal living.

Id like to point out also that moral decline can be used interchangeably with
increasingly deviating morality. Either conservative values are incrementally changed
over time, deemed less relevant, displaced or even replaced by competing moral
systems.

But deviation means that there was a standard with which one should inform and
conform their conscience with. And thus I cannot merely recommend an arbitrary moral
standard; I advocate for what the founding fathers of the system of our society
designed it for, and what I perceive to be the only suitable moral source: Christianity.

So here is my position: Moral declination is at the root of almost all of our societys
problems if not all. Moral declination is in essence a deviation from a standard by which
we must return to, and the standard Im appealing to is Christian virtues, values, and
principles.

Now for one, an informed conscience is a major necessity for a society to be kept from
degradation in general. Even when the person is willingly going against his, the
legislated laws or the moral law, the conscience is such that it will ravage the person for
violating any perceived and believed law. The conscience is also such that it will take a
lot of effort and repetition before it can be subdued completely.

1
When the American constitution was formulated, at least 50 of 55 of the founding
fathers were Orthodox Christians, or they were heavily affected by a predominantly
Christian heritage. This also applies to the Philippine constitution, which was heavily
modeled after the Americans.

While our Country remains untainted with the Principles and manners, which are now
producing desolation in so many Parts of the World: while the continues Sincere and
incapable of insidious and impious Policy: We shall have the Strongest Reason to rejoice
in the local destination assigned Us by Providence. But should the People of America,
once become capable of that deep simulation towards one another and towards
foreign nations, which assumes the Language of Justice and moderation while it is
practicing Iniquity and Extravagance; and displays in the most captivating manner the
charming Pictures of Candour frankness & sincerity while it is rioting in rapine and
Insolence: this Country will be the most miserable Habitation in the World. Because
We have no Government armed with Power capable of contending with
human Passions unbridled by morality and Religion. Avarice, Ambition
Revenge or Galantry, would break the strongest Cords of our Constitution as a Whale
goes through a Net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People.
It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other

-John Adams, signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and the 2 nd
president of the USA

And it is evident that a democratic society which works through the power of the
majority would be led by whatever values the citizens had, the impact of a societys
moral values acutely affects the whole nation as a result.

Overseas in the United States, sexual freedom has become the norm; they host 60%
of the worlds pornographic pages, lead the world in the production of pornographic
material, and fornication is treated somewhat of a trophy; evidenced by their culture in
their entertainment, their language, their humor, and what is seen as normal;

"Approximately 92% of the 174 songs that made it into the [Billboard] Top 10 in
2009 contained reproductive messages," says SUNY Albany psychology professor Dawn
R. Hobbs in Evolutionary Psychology. That's right--"reproductive messages," our newest
favorite euphemism.
Those 174 top-selling songs were analyzed in order to determine how
many sexy messages they contained in any of 18 sexy categories, including "arousal,"
"sexual prowess," and "genitalia." There was an average of 10.49 sex-related phrases

2
per song, with R&B being head-and-shoulders(-and-maybe-some-other-body-parts)
above the two other musical genres analyzed, country and pop. "Sexual appeal" was
the most popular theme among both R&B and pop songs, while "commitment" (yawn)
was most prevalent in country music.

The vast majority of Americans have sex before marriage, including

those who abstained from sex during their teenage years, according to Trends in
Premarital Sex in the United States, 19542003, by Lawrence B. Finer, published in the
January/February 2007 issue of Public Health Reports. Further, contrary to the public
perception that premarital sex is much more common now than in the past, the study
shows that even among women who were born in the 1940s, nearly nine in 10 had sex
before marriage.

The new study uses data from several rounds of the federal National
Survey of Family Growth to examine sexual behavior before marriage, and how it has
changed over time. According to the analysis, by age 44, 99% of respondents had had
sex, and 95% had done so before marriage. Even among those who abstained from sex
until age 20 or older, 81% had had premarital sex by age 44.

This is reality-check research. Premarital sex is normal behavior for the

vast majority of Americans, and has been for decades, says study author Lawrence
Finer, director of domestic research at the Guttmacher Institute. The data clearly show
that the majority of older teens and adults have already had sex before marriage, which
calls into question the federal governments funding of abstinence-only-until-marriage
programs for 1229-year-olds. It would be more effective to provide young people with
the skills and information they need to be safe once they become sexually active
which nearly everyone eventually will.

America is also one of the most acceptant nations in the world regarding
homosexuality. It is so well-received that opposition against the practice is treated as
bigotry and in the same caliber as racism, and meeting them with harsh opposition.

Some of these problems seemed harmless at first, but in reality they strike against the
sanctity of the intended form of sexual relationship, and the very foundation of society;
the family. The purpose of the family in raising children is extremely vital in creating or
ruining a good society through the manner they raise their children, since children are
quite literally the future of a nation.

This deviance from the right sexual norm being a problem in of itself, has also
contributed to the increase of criminal activity which is be traced back to the effects of
a sexually deviant culture. As individuals engage in premarital sex which results in
pregnancy, the biological fathers usually deny their responsibilities as fathers who are
supposed to guide and discipline the children from error. If the mother doesnt
compensate for the lack of a father, the children are more likely to grow up as
delinquents and criminals, and if the future of the nation are raised as such, its no
wonder if the country will suffer violence.

While a number of previous studies have found that unmarried fertility

is associated with unfavorable childhood outcomes, our analysis is one of the first to
measure the long-run effect on crime when these children reach adulthood, Kendall
and Tamura write.

According to the analysis, an increase of 10 out-of-wedlock births per

1,000 live births was associated with up to a 5 percent increase in future murder rates.

4
The researchers find that most of the large increase in the number of murders in the
U.S. during the 1970s and 1980s can be explained by out-of-wedlock births.

The study used crime statistics and birth records from 1923 to 2002 in
the 32 U.S. states that record the marital status of parents.

Single-parent families also tend to draw financial support from the government, thereby
becoming a burden to the whole state, draining funds that could be used for other
projects.

Many single mothers receive government aid in the form of welfare.

More than 75 percent of single teenage mothers receive welfare within five years of
giving birth (J. Jacobson and R. Maynard, Unwed Mothers and Long-Term
Dependency).

Forty percent of nonteenage single mothers are poor, and nearly 60 percent rely on
food stamps or cash welfare payments after the birth of their child.19) Single mothers
generally remain impoverished longer than divorced mothers. Whereas divorced
mothers who receive welfare do so for three to four years, the always-single mother is
less likely to stop receiving welfare and takes longer to exit poverty.20)

Receiving welfare may actually decrease womens employment, a

potential path out of poverty. Women are less likely to be employed in states with high
levels of welfare benefits.21) Findings from an experiment conducted by the U.S. Office
of Income Security Policy show that female heads-of-households responded to income
guarantees by significantly reducing their work effort.22)

5
Its also a no-brainer to perceive that sexual promiscuity also increases the rate and the
ease of the disease to spread throughout the population, which can be prevented
through abstinence.

America even until now still keeps on liberating themselves from their conservative
values, increasing their support for same-sex marriage, abortion, sexual freedom, sex-
culture, no-fault divorce, and so many more. Its global influence through media only
helps to spread its moral corruption worldwide.

And as we can see, even failure to attend to the problem of sexual immorality, which is
something that seems to not hurt anyone but myself can already lead to higher crime
rates, incur heavier economic strain through welfare support for single-parent families,
spread diseases, and damage to the foundation of society itself, it is demonstrated that
ultimately, the problems of our society can be traced back to the present state of their
moral foundation.

As a rule of thumb, history tends to repeat itself if the same strides are taken and the
same mistakes were made. Thus, it is not a farfetched conclusion that if the same thing
happened in our own country, wed experience the same problems as they did.

Unfortunately at home, sexual immorality is also a very big problem in Filipinos even
among youths, and childrearing at a relatively young age is not uncommon, and the
cultural spillover of the U.S. has also corrupted Philippine values.

Thirty two percent of young Filipinos aged 15-24 had engaged in sex
before marriage, up from 23 percent reported a decade ago. This finding came from the
2013 Young Adult Fertility Study (YAFS 4).

In 2002, the percentage of young women with premarital sex

experience stood at 16 percent, almost half the level found among young men (31.2

6
percent). A decade later, 36 percent of young men reported having engaged in
premarital sex compared to 29 percent among young women. Regional difference in
premarital sex prevalence shows the National Capital Region (NCR) having the highest
prevalence at 41 percent and ARMM, the lowest (7.7 percent).

As a result

One in ten young Filipino women age 15-19 has begun childbearing: 8
percent are already mothers and another 2 percent are pregnant with their first child
according to the results of the 2013 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS).
Among young adult women age 20 to 24, 43 percent are already mothers and 4
percent are pregnant with their first child.

Very young parents tend to be poor providers and poor parents, as they have not yet
reached a certain level of maturity to raise their children, and establish a certain level of
financial stability.

Far from being innocent, Filipinos top the whole world in time spent watching
pornography.

A year's worth of web traffic data shows that the Philippines ranked
ahead of all other countries when it came to the average time spent watching videos on
Pornhub.com.

7
The Philippines really stood out, where the average visit duration spans
a leisurely 12 minutes and 40 seconds. The Philippines outranked all other Asian-Pacific
countries for time spent on the Internet each day (6+ hours) and clearly, a good
amount of that time is being spent on Pornhub," the website said.

That, along with the influence of American pop-culture through music and movies and
the subsequent tolerance of these influences as shown by the increasing
provocativeness of the themes, scenes, and clothing in Philippine soap opera shows,
serves both as symptoms and agents of our moral degradation.

Another problem is a lack of regard for authority, whether it be government authority or

parental authority.

Some teenagers for example disobey and dishonor their parents wishes for them to
take their education seriously, and take in habits such as cutting classes, utter disregard
for the requirements of their subjects, have friends that are the same if not worse
influences, and thus flunking their records and the required skills for certain decent
paying jobs. This may be one of the biggest causes of poverty in the Philippines.

And due to their lack of attention to their parents advices, discipline, and principles, if
not rebellion against them, some delve into deeper levels of wretchedness, becoming
drug users, drug pushers, robbers, scammers, prostitutes, drunkards, deadbeat fathers
and mothers, and the like, contributing to the crime rate of a society.

8
Sometimes, the fault lies on the part of the parents. Due to preoccupations, negligence,
absence either due to marital separation or work overseas, or simple incompetence,
children grow up with little to no moral guidance whatsoever.

Others might point out that corruption is the big problem of our country, but even that
comes from the greed and dishonesty of our government agents, otherwise they
wouldnt be extremely corrupt.

Some might say its just education, but as The Great Evangelist D. L. Moody said: If a
man is stealing nuts and bolts from a railway track, and, in order to change him, you
send him to college, at the end of his education, he will steal the whole railway track."

People with high education may avoid poverty, but it neither persuades them to share
what they acquired nor dissuades them from wrongdoing. If unchecked by morality,
they will simply leave the streets and avoid gross robbery, and instead enter the
political arena and rob the people indirectly.

Now, since immoral behavior is the root of almost (if not all) problems in a nation, we
should ask what went wrong? I see three reasons as to what went wrong that is
leading to our moral declination.

1.)Failure to emphasize the impact of immoral behavior

2.)Failure to emphasize a standard for determining immoral behavior
3.)Failure to emphasize empathy and other drives to moral and righteous behavior

Morality also affects all, and in most cases instigates a persons actions, may it be a
good conscience guided by a fixed set of morals or a subjective conscience governed by
empathy. An impoverished father may either end up working very hard or resort to
unjust or deadly means of breadwinning, and which the person will end up in is going

9
to be dictated by what he holds in conviction is truly good and evil.

But sometimes, we belittle the effects of all our activities. For example, we think that
we have the hold of ourselves, and we can stop at any moment and prevent ourselves
from growing worse, but we dont realize that were all such that we tend to take a mile
when we give ourselves an inch, and by doing so we also desensitize our conscience,
giving way for us to go deafer and deafer to our conscience, which also gives way for
worse behaviors.

We might say to ourselves that it doesnt matter much, since none, or few will be hurt
by our actions. But as demonstrated by the sexual immorality of the U.S., even if it
might not look so serious at a small scale, but when many people do so they
significantly tear the moral fiber of a society even if little by little.

Many people dont realize these things, or they simply suppress the truth in
unrighteousness. We like the thought of kabutihang panglahat but we mostly think
about doing good works for others, but we forget, or choose to forget, about our wrong
actions and how those affect our surroundings. Thus a part of the problem is how weve
failed to emphasize the consequences of our immoral behaviors.

And if some people actively choose to ignore such consequences, then we hope for the
sword of our nation, and that its a sword not blunted by the rust of immoral practices
but sharpened by the whetstone of moral values.

Another part of the problem is how loose our basis for right and wrong is; though many
may profess to hold on to an objective standard, many finally rely on some vague and
subjective basis for empathy or the greater good, all of which are very good if
guided by an objective standard, but it can be very dangerous if it took precedence
over an objective moral standard.

10
Now its not acceptable to simply have generic religious values to solve the problem,
since part of the morality issue is the diversity of moral perspectives; an objective,
fixed, and unified perspective is required since unanchored moral values is part of our
problem for when people leave it to themselves to decide right from wrong, they will
do whats right in their own eyes.

To counteract the moral decay of our society, we need a benchmark or a standard. The
benchmark must be Christian ethics. Now Im not proposing that the Christian faith
should be imposed as a compulsory religion, since that is forbidden by the Separation
of Church and State, and history teaches us that placing a crown on the head of an
organized religion (Especially the kind where human infallibility is involved) has never
worked for the better, to say the least.

Rather, Im proposing that Judeo-Christian based values should be used for three
reasons:

>Ive pointed out earlier how our political system was meant for a Christianity guided
conscience and is not meant for anything else.

>Its also the only true basis for this world that, if followed by itself and correct
reasoning, will provide a peaceful world of equality, justice, and truth, along with the
fact that it is an objective standard with an objective, unchanging Authority.

>And also it is the reason why the modern civilization is the way it is, is due to its
contributions by way of the perception of the world it offers, and its followers who, at
great odds and opposition, countered their culture, bringing a change for the better in
their community, their nation, or even the whole world that was a consequence of its
moral system.

11
Here are some of the contributions of a Christianity based, Christianity consistent
worldview. (Courtesy of D. James Kennedy):

1) Hospitals, which essentially began during the Middle Ages.

Education and literacy for the masses

From the beginning of Judaism, from which Christianity is derived, there

was an emphasis on the written word. But the phenomenon of education for the
masses has its roots in the Protestant Reformation.

In order to promote Bible literacy, Christians have been leaders in

education. This trend was accelerated with the advent of the printing press at about the
same time as the Protestant Reformation. Many of the world's languages were first set
to writing by Christian missionaries in order for people to read the Bible.

In America, the first law to require education of the masses was passed
by the Puritans. The law was called "THE OLD DELUDER SATAN ACT." This name was a
reference to the devil, who Christians believe gets his foothold into people's lives
because of their ignorance of Scripture.

For the first 200 years in America, children's reading texts emphasized
biblical literacy. The emphasis on literacy was so intense in colonial America, that John
Quincy Adams said in the early 1800's that the illiteracy rate was only 4/10th of 1
percent. By comparison, it has been estimated that in America today, 40 million people
are functionally illiterate.

Colleges and Universities

All but one of the first 123 colleges in colonial America were Christian institutions. While
these universities have lost their Christian identities, it is interesting to read the

12
founding statements of these schools. Harvard, for example, was founded on this
statement: Let every student be plainly instructed, and earnestly pressed to consider
well, the main end of his life and studies is, to know God and Jesus Christ which is
eternal life, John 17:3?

The abolition of slavery in antiquity and in more recent times

Wilberforce and his anti-slavery fight were documented in a recent book

Bury the Chains: Prophets and Rebels in the Fight to Free an Empires Slaves by Adam
Hochschild (2005). Dr Sowell summarizes in a review:

The anti-slavery movement was spearheaded by people who would

today be called the religious right and its organization was created by conservative
businessmen. Moreover, what destroyed slavery in the non-Western world was Western
imperialism. Nothing could be more jolting and discordant with the vision of todays
intellectuals than the fact that it was businessmen, devout religious leaders and
Western imperialists who together destroyed slavery around the world.

The elevation of womens rights, inherent dignity, and worth.

In ancient cultures, a wife was the property of her husband. Aristotle

said that a woman was somewhere between a free man and a slave. According to the
book Reasons for God by Tim Keller (page 249), "It was extremely common in the
Greco-Roman world to throw out new female infants to die from exposure, because of
the low status of women in society. The church forbade its members to do so. Greco-
Roman society saw no value in an unmarried woman, and therefore it was illegal for a
13
widow to go more than two years without remarrying.

But Christianity was the first religion to not force widows to marry. They
were supported financially and honored within the community so that they were not
under great pressure to remarry if they didn't want to. Pagan widows lost all control of
their husband's estate when they remarried, but the church allowed widows to maintain
their husband's estate. Finally, Christians did not believe in cohabitation.

If a Christian man wanted to live with a woman he had to marry her, and this gave
women far greater security. Also, the pagan double standard of allowing married men
to have extramarital sex and mistresses was forbidden. In all these ways Christian
women enjoyed far greater security and equality than did women in the surrounding
culture. See Rodney Stark, The Rise of Christianity." In India, widows were voluntarily
or involuntarily burned on their husbands' funeral pyres. Christian missionaries were a
major influence in stopping these century-old practices and ideas.

Equal human rights to children

In the ancient world, for example in classical Rome or Greece,

infanticide was not only legal, it was applauded. Killing a Roman was murder, but it was
commonly held in Rome that killing one's own children could be an act of beauty.
Through a higher view of life, it was the early Christian church that ultimately brought
an end to infanctide. The modern pro-life movement is largely Christian. This pro-life
view has been true from the very beginning of Christianity. A Christian document called
the Didache, dated from the late first century or early second century, contained

14
instructions against abortion.

Free Enterprise and Work Ethic

Private property rights can be traced to the Ten Commandments in

Exodus 20:15, 17 (Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not covet.")--as well as to other
passages from the Old and New Testaments. Interestingly, there are over 700
references to money in the Bible!

It is noteworthy that Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations was written in

1776, the same year as the birth of America. But many historians credit theologian John
Calvin from 200 years earlier as the person who is most responsible for putting together
the principles that were always in the Bible into a system adapted by the American
founders. For example, the biblical doctrines of self-reliance and self-denial are the
foundation of the famous "Protestant work ethic." These doctrines are at the heart of
our economic (and political) way of life.

A distinction can be made between biblical capitalism and evolutionary

capitalism. The emphasis on biblical capitalism is on the importance of servanthood--a
key teaching of Jesus. Evolutionary capitalism, on the other hand, relies solely on the
survival of the fittest. See our blog article Biblical Capitalism in Uncertain Economic
Times.

Anyone who doubts the relationship of biblical ideas to free enterprise

need only to note the stark contrast with communism. Communism is specifically an
atheistic system that relies on the non-biblical notion that all men are good (thus will
work for the common good). But communism has been an abject economic failure.

15
As put by D'Spouza, "The system of modern capitalism arose in the
West. To some it is surprising that capitalism developed so easily in conjunction with a
Christian ethic. But capitalism satisfied the Christian demand for an institution that
channels selfish human desire toward the betterment of society. Some critics accuse
capitalism of being a selfish system, but the selfishness is not in capitalismit is in
human nature....While profit remains the final goal, entrepreneurs spend the better part
of each day figuring out how better to serve the needs of their actual and potential
customers. They are operationally, if not intentionally, altruistic....One may say that
capitalism civilizes greed in much the same way that marriage civilizes lust."

Marriage and Family

-As explained by D'Souza, before the Christian era, pederasty and homosexuality
were not considered wrong: "Christianity exalted heterosexual monogamous love, which
would provide the basis for a lasting and exclusive relationship between husband and
wife, oriented toward the rearing of children. We take the family so much for granted
it remains such a powerful ideal in our society, even when actual family life falls short
that we forget the central premises on which it is based. Those premises were
introduced by Christianity into a society to which they were completely foreign."

The condemnation of adultery, homosexuality, and other sexual perversions.

This has helped to preserve the human race, and it has spared many from
heartache.

16) Elevation of the Common Man and The High Regard for Human Life.

16
Then God said; let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness...
-Genesis 1:26

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him, male and
female He created them.
-Genesis 1:27

17) The civilizing of many barbarian and primitive cultures.

The codifying and setting to writing of many of the worlds languages.

The countless changed lives transformed from liabilities into assets to society
because of the gospel.

Which includes Psychopaths, Islamic State Terrorists, Drug Addicts, Prostitutes, Crime
Syndicate Members, Gangsters, etc.; The Gospel does not discriminate from the moral
to the outright wicked, rich or poor, slave or free, stupid or stupendous.

Now, how can this standard be implemented and the deviations corrected?

One would be for the Government to dissuade and illegalize behaviors not in
accordance to Christian principles. The government should be geared towards
maintaining an as pure as possible conscience and imagination, blocking and
discouraging sexually illicit, explicit, or provocative content, encourages in mainstream
media and mainstream internet.

Another would be by emphasizing the GMRC and ESP subjects, improving the
curriculum based on Christian principles, and encouraging the public to honorable,
moral, and good behaviors, and creating programs aimed at these tasks.

17
And another would be by encouraging moral and righteous behaviors such as
marriages, adoptions, good parental guidance, communities, charity, obedience,
diligence, and the like, through encouragement of content that show these things,
encouragements for a wholesome culture, especially for young people, informing the
parents in whose hands lie the future of the nation, and emphasizing these subjects in
the very early stages of the life of a person.

Again, the purpose is to merely create a society that has an informed and reliable
conscience, a predisposition towards moral behavior, and a society that has a good,
objective, and reliable standard, and this be done without changing our Constitution nor
our form of Government; in the form that our forefathers accepted it and its
formulators made and intended it to be.

My stand is this: We have become immoral while staying religious, be more and more
for Lucifer while professing to have been always for God, and all this we have done in
our nonchalance and stupidity and to our own hurt. We must see what has become of
our once most admired Bald Eagle, for he has become a Vulture; feeding off rottenness
and defiling himself, and an Ostrich; careless, senseless, trampling her own nest of
young, nay, lets see him for what he really is; a Rooster, that which proclaims dawn is
ahead, dawn is ahead!, like that who reminded Peter of His betrayal against His Lord,
and thus the one who warns us Dont go any further! See what has happened to me!
Im stuck in this pit, addicted to this poison, and I dont know if I can get out, nay, if I
even want to! Yea, let us take heed and turn. Turn back to safety, turn back to Him,
let us follow Him once more, and though our sins are as scarlet they shall be white as
snow, and though they are crimson they shall be white as wool. Let us turn back and
see if He is good, let us turn again and see if He wont open the floodgates of heaven
and bless this Nation sevenfold! For why must you die, why must you suffer O our
nation? Turn and live! Why do you work for that which does not satisfy? Why do you
hew up for yourselves broken cisterns that hold no water? Turn to me, the fountain of
life! Turn to me and be saved all the ends of the Earth! Turn to me and be saved! Turn

18
to me.
