MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

"It can happen. It does happen.

But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane.

We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the
last years editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic
excellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are
supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning
and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting
the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to
achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look
forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking
forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in
this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers
are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play
the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive
challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic
needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the
opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on
this path.

My best wishes to all.

Dr. A. Sengupta

HISTORICAL ARTICLE
Werner Heisenberg
Werner Heisenberg was a German physicist and philosopher who
is noted for his crucial contributions to quantum mechanics. He
devised a method to formulate quantum mechanics in terms of
matrices, for which he was awarded the 1932 Nobel Prize for
Physics. Heisenberg is widely considered as one of the most
influential figures in nuclear physics, particle physics and quantum
field theory.
Early Life and Education:
Born in Wrzburg, Germany in 1901, Werner Heisenbergs father
was a prominent secondary school teacher. Heisenberg went to the
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitt Mnchen and the Georg-
August-Universitt Gttingen, where he studied physics and
mathematics from 1920 to 1923. He earned his doctorate in 1923.
Contributions and Achievements:
Werner Heisenberg ranks alongside Niels Bohr, Paul
Dirac and Richard Feynman as far as his influence on contemporary
physics is concerned. He was one of the most important figures in
the development of quantum mechanics, and its modern
interpretation.

3
06-10-2017

Heisenberg formulated the quantum theory of ferromagnetism, the

neutron-proton model of the nucleus, the S-matrix theory in
particle scattering, and various other significant breakthroughs in
quantum field theory and high-energy particle physics are
associated with him. As a prolific author, Heisenberg wrote more
than 600 original research papers, philosophical essays and
explanations for general audiences. His work is still available in
the nine volumes of the Gesammelte Werke (Collected Works).

Heisenberg is synonymous with the so-called uncertainty, or

indeterminacy, principle of 1927, for one of the earliest
breakthroughs to quantum mechanics in 1925, and for his
suggestion of a unified field theory, the so-called world formula.
He won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1932 at the young age of 31.

Heisenberg stayed firmly in Germany during the worst years of the

Hitler regime, heading Germanys research effort on the
applications of nuclear fission during World War II. He also
played a vital role in the reconstruction of West German science
after the war. Heisenbergs role was crucial in the success of West
Germanys nuclear and high-energy physics research programs.

Later Life and Death:

In his later years, Werner Heisenberg assumed various influential

positions in Germany and abroad, giving important lectures on
theoretical physics and other subjects. He died of cancer of the
kidneys and gall bladder on February 1, 1976. Heisenberg was 74
years old.

NEWS UPDATE
Preeclampsia triggered by an overdose of
gene activity: (6th October, 2017)
Preclampsia, the most dangerous form of hypertension during a
pregnancy, is known to originate in the placenta. But the root
causes remain largely a mystery. Findings reveal that it is not a
single disease caused solely by genetic factors: Epigenetically
regulated genes play an important role. The research team also
developed an in vitro model of the disorder which demonstrates
the dysregulation of an important transcription factor.

Cannabis consumption increases violent

behavior in young people in psychiatric care:
(6th October, 2017)
A new study on cannabis use that involved 1,136 patients (from
18 to 40 years of age) with mental illnesses who had been seen
five times during the year after discharge from a psychiatric
hospital demonstrates that sustained used of cannabis is
associated with an increase in violent behavior in young people.
Moreover, the association between persistent cannabis use and
violence is stronger than that associated with alcohol or
cocaine.

DNA damage caused by cancer treatment

reversed by ZATT protein :( 6th October,
2017)
An international team has discovered a new way that cells fix an
important and dangerous type of DNA damage known as a
DNA-protein cross-link (DPC). The researchers found that a

5
06-10-2017

protein named ZATT can eliminate DPCs with the help of

another protein, TDP2.

Predicting when a sound will occur relies on the

brain's motor system:( 5th October, 2017)
Whether it is dancing or just tapping one foot to the beat, we all
experience how auditory signals like music can induce
movement. Now new research suggests that motor signals in the
brain actually sharpen sound perception, and this effect is
increased when we move in rhythm with the sound.

How to decrease the discard rate of donated

organs :( 5th October, 2017)
From 2008-2015, the number of kidneys donated after
circulatory death that were obtained by the country's 58 donor
service areas varied substantially. The outcomes associated with
these organs were generally excellent. The use of these organs
could be increased if 'cold ischemia times' are limited.

Women who get frequent UTIs may reduce risk

by drinking plenty of water :( 5th October,
2017)
Women who suffer from recurrent urinary tract infections may
reduce their risk by drinking more water, according to a new
study.

First cell-type census of mouse brains:

Surprises about structure, male-female
differences:( 5th October, 2017)
Neuroscientists have mobilized advanced imaging and
computational methods to comprehensively map -- 'count' -- the
total populations of specific types of cells throughout the mouse
brain. In a new study, they report two highly surprising findings
regarding distribution of cell types across the brain as well as
male-female brain differences.

DNA-based Zika vaccine is safe and effective

at inducing immune response :( 4th October,
2017)
A new generation DNA-based Zika vaccine demonstrated both
safety and ability to elicit an immune response against Zika in
humans in a phase 1 clinical trial.

Problems with senses may predict older adults'

overall health, ability to function:( 4th
October, 2017)
Researchers have mainly focused on what happens after people
lose one or two of their senses. However, we know that losing
more than two senses occurs frequently for older adults. Until
now, no studies have examined how losing multiple senses affects
older adults. To learn more, a team of researchers designed a study
to focus on just that.

Spiradoline: A role in myocardial ischemia

The opioid system promises to be a major target for
pharmacological intervention in the treatment of myocardial
infarction. Protection from stresses such as ischemia is elicited by
activation of opioid receptors in numerous organs. Opioids are
implicated in both early and delayed cardioprotection. In animal
models of post-infarction cardiosclerosis and stress, spiradoline (8
mg/kg i.p.) had a stabilizing effect on the ventricular fibrillation
threshold, an effect that was also antagonized by
norbinaltorphimine. Spiradoline had inhibitory effects on
epinephrine-induced dysrhythmias in rats which could be
antagonized by the selective -receptor antagonist
norbinaltorphimine, but not by hexamethonium or atropine .In
vitro cardiovascular studies in the isolated rat heart have shown
that spiradoline reduces heart rate and contractility at 100 M. In
addition, it increases PR interval, as well as QRS width, in the
ECG in a concentration-dependent manner. Subsequent findings,
using the patch-clamp method in isolated rat cardiac myocytes,
indicated that spiradoline (15 to 500 M) produces its
antiarrythmic effect via blockade of sodium channels (and at the

8
06-10-2017

higher doses also of potassium currents) in myocardial tissue .This

is further supported by more recent findings where spiradoline
(300 M) produced a tonic and use-dependent blockade of heart
sodium channels expressed in Xenopus oocytes . Further,
spiradoline has been reported to reduce blood pressure and heart
rate, as well as to prolong PR interval and QRS duration in
anesthetized rats in vivo . Nevertheless, it has been suggested by
some investigators that the observed cardiovascular effects of
spiradoline are not dependent on kappa receptor stimulation, since
they can be observed even in the presence of a kappa receptor
antagonist. While a number of studies suggest that
arylbenzacetamide compounds reduce neuronal damage resulting
from ischemia and reduce trauma-related injury the mechanistic
basis for these actions is not well understood. Spiradoline
(U62066) produced dose-related reductions in mean arterial
pressure, left ventricular systolic pressure and heart rate in dogs.
The actions of spiradoline on blood pressure and heart rate depend
upon dose, species, and level of anesthesia; it can raise or lower
blood pressure and heart rate dependent upon the test situation .
