NAME :

MATRIX NO.: .............................

INSTRUCTION:

Answer all the questions below.

(a) A group of nine bars of piles, 500mm diameter and 12 m length is driven
into a very thick clay layer( C = 50kN/m2, = 0.45 ). If the pile is able to
carry an applied load of 1080 kN, determine the safety factor of the pile,
assuming that the distance between center to center of the pile is 2 times
of the pile width.:

(b) A group of 25 bars of piles is placed from the depth of 1 meter to 13 m

through a 25 m of clay. The pile has a diameter of 0.6 m and the distance
between the piles (c/c) is 2 m. The values of the undrained shear strength
is 170 kN/m2 at the base and the average shear strength values along the
pile is 105 kN/m2. If = 0.45,
i. The ultimate capacity of a single pile ( 2 marks )
ii. The ultimate capacity of a group pile ( block failure ) ( 6 marks )

(c) A group of concrete foundation piles (square in plan) contains

sixteen piles with each pile is 18 meters long and 0.45 m diameter.
This pile embedded at a distance of 1.10 meters (c / c) in the clay
with the Cu = 30kN/m2 (along the pile) and Cu = 40 kN/m2 under the
bed. The unit weight of soil and concrete respectively 19.2 kN/m3
and 24.0 kN/m3. By making appropriate assumptions about the bearing
capacity and pile adhesion factors;.

i. Calculate the load required to cause failure of a single pile if it is

embedded by:
(1) Driven ( 2 marks )
(2) Ground on ( 2 marks )

ii. What is the safe load ( FOS= 3) approved for the pile once it is
driven. (use = 0.9).
