Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the annual conference Rajaswa Gyan Sangam, 2017 in New
Delhi on 1st of Sep. The Conference have been jointly organised by the Central Board of Direct Taxes
(CBDT) and the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC).
The deadline for linking Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar has extended by four months to
31st December announced by the government.
On September 1, 2017 Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Vijay Goelhas announced that a
new Youth Sports Centre to be built at Alipur, Delhi. Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) and Sports
Authority of India (SAI) will jointly create and run this unique Youth Sports Centre.
The Kerala Tourism department has launched a campaign called Yalla Kerala (Yalla means lets go). It has
been launched to target tourists from Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain and
Qatar.
Indias first indigenous sniper rifle was launched at the rifle factory in West Bengal.Its total cost is Rs 2.5
lakh and weighing 6.7 Kg.The rifle has a shooting range of 800 meters.
With an aim to improve the condition of small and marginal farmers, the Union Ministry of Science and
Technology is planning to create Farmer Zone which is a collective open source data platform for smart
agriculture using biological research.
On September 1,2017,Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has approved the constitution of an Empowered
Steering Committee (ESC) on the basis of the recommendations of the interim report of the8-member Task
Force headed by AbinavBindra.It will increase Indias medal prospects in forthcoming Olympic games
including 2020 Tokyo Olympic games.
Environment Ministry will launch an environment awareness initiative. Under which an online environmental
quiz competition named Prakriti Khoj an Environment Quiz to be conducted at the national
level.The quiz is being launched on 5th of September on the occasion of Teachers Day.
On September 3,2017, the cabinet got extended and reshuffled for the third time. Modi expanded his council
of ministers twicefirst on November 9, 2014 and then on July 5, 2016. Nine new Ministers of state were
inducted into the Union Council of Ministers. Four Ministers of state were elevated to the cabinet rank.
On September 2 ,2017 Delhi lieutenant governor Anil Baijal banned dumping of waste at the Ghazipur landfill
site because on September 1 ,2017 a mountain of waste collapsed into a canal, killing two people. Baijal
ordered immediate halt to dumping of solid waste at the landfill and clearing the site within two years.
The Karnataka government has decided to make education free for all girls from Class 1 to graduation level in
all public and aided private schools and colleges from the next academic year announced on 2nd Sept 2017.
Under this scheme, student must pay the fees first at the time of admission and later get it reimbursed by the
government.
Cell for IPR Promotions and Management (CIPAM), which works under the Department of Industrial Policy
and Promotion (DIPP) in the ministry, has started an #LetsTalkIP initiative to promote Indian Geographical
Indications.
Ye India ka time hai event was organized at National Institute of Technology, Raipur Chhattisgarh on 3rd of
Sept.The event was held as per the directives of HRD ministry to mark Indias 70 years of independence and
75 years of the Quit India movement.
Shri Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shipping and Water Resources, River
Development and Ganga Rejuvenation has flagged off a fleet of first batch of 1000 E-rickshaws from Huda
City Centre metro station in Gurugram on 3rd of Sept 2017. The E rickshaw fleet is being operated by
Treasure Vase Ventures Private Limited in partnership of Delhi Metro, under the SmartE brand name.
The Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation constituted a task
force for speedy implementation of various ongoing Namami Gange program.
Namami Gange programme is a program of Union Government aiming at integrating various efforts to clean
and protect River Ganga.

On 5th September 2017, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Home Minister Rajnath
Singhflaged off the first run of the Lucknow Metro from the Transport Nagar Metro Station in
Lucknow.The 8.5-km-long Priority Corridor from Transport Nagar to Charbagh, which is part of the Phase-1
of the project, will be operational for the public from 6 am to 10 pm everyday.
On 5th September 2017, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched two new contraceptives,
an injectible MPA (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate) under the Antara programme and contraceptive
pill Chhaya in New Delhi. The contraceptives are said to be safe and highly effective.
On 5th September 2017, Leader of the Green Revolution Dr.M.S.Swaminathan and Padma Shri
Dr.H.Sudarshan launched the National Nutrition Strategy, along with Vice Chairman of Niti Aayog Dr.Rajiv
Kumar and Member of Niti Aayog Dr.Vinod Paul.
Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani has launched Gyakunj e-class project from Shahpur primary school in
Gandhinagar announced on 4th Sept 2017. Under this initiative, interactive e-class will be launched with
smart board.In the first phase, 550 schools will be covered under the Gyankunj Project and
gradually standard 5th to 9th of every schools of the state will cover under the project.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has inaugurated the Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and
Hospital (SLNMCH) in the tribal-dominated district of southern Odisha on 4th Sept. 2017. The SLNMCH in
Koraput has been established at a cost of Rs. 192 crore.
In Assam, the state govt. has set up a Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) Cell for implementation of DBT across
schemes in the Country. It helps in coordinating efforts at the State Level in taking the DBT initiative forward
with immediate effect.
Assam government will upgrade employment exchanges to Modern Career Centres announced on 6th of Sep.
2017. All modern facilities including counselling will be provided at the proposed career centres.
As part of labour law reforms, the Government has undertaken the exercise of rationalisation of the 38 Labour
Acts by framing 4 labour codes viz Code on Wages, Code on Industrial Relations, Code on Social Security
and Code on occupational safety, health and working conditions.It subsumes 4 existing Laws,
1. The Minimum Wages Act, 1948;
2. The Payment of Wages Act, 1936;
3. The Payment of Bonus Act, 1965; and
4. The Equal Remuneration Act, 1976.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has announced a new programme named Jala Siriki
Haarati. It is a programme offering prayers to water bodies and to create awareness among the public
regarding water preservation announced on 6th sept. 2017. The programme will be held on September 6, 7
and 8 across the state.
On 6th September 2017, an Expert Task Force was constituted with the NITI Aayog Vice Chairman, Dr.Rajiv
Kumar, as its Chairperson to provide a major thrust to job creation by enhancing Indias exports.
On 6th September 2017, Home Ministry announced that Chiefs of central armed police forces like Central
Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Border Security Force (BSF) and other central agencies have been
empowered to spend up to Rs.15 crore for executing major projects and Rs.1 crore for minor works, including
repairing of residential buildings.
Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Andhra
Pradesh Economic Development Board (APEDB) on 6th of Sept. 2017.The pact has been signed to connect
Vijayawada and Amaravati, the new capital of Andhra Pradesh in Guntur district.After conducting the
feasibility study, in the second phase of the project, the company will construct and build the first hyperloop
in the country.
On 8th September 2017, Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Ministry of Water Resources entered into a
Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore for development of
ground water flow models and preparation of aquifer management plans for Karnataka, in New Delhi.
First water ATM has been inaugurated by Telangana State Home Minister N Narasimha Reddy at Nalgonda X
Roads on 7th of Sept. 2017.It will provide affordable, 247 safe water access in Hyderabad.
The government has allowed import of 3 lakh tonnes of raw sugar at a concessional duty of 25% import duty
under Open General License (Tariff Rate Quota) has been allowed through millers/refiners on 7th of Sept.
2017. The imports will be allowed through the ports namely Tuticorin, Karaikal, Chennai, Mangalore,
Kakinada, Gangavaram and Vishakapatnam in the South.
On 8th September 2017, in New Delhi the Ministry of Civil Aviation introduced new rules for the formation
of a national No Fly list that bans unruly passengers from travelling in airplanes.
On 7th September 2017, a new study claimed that one of the biodiversity-rich uninhabited island of
Lakshadweep Parali I has vanished due to coastal erosion.Parali I island of Laskshadweep has been eroded

completely and vanished.The island was a part of Bangaram chain of islands, and was 0.032 square km in area
in 1968.
On 9th September 2017, the 21st meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council was held at
Hyderabad International Convention Centre, in Hyderabad. This is the first time the GST Council met after
filing of GST returns.
On 8th September 2017, in New Delhi, the Government announced that it has approved cadre review policy
for Junior Commissioned Officers & other rank-holders in the Army, and Indian Army is to induct women in
military police.The last cadre review for army personnel was done in 1984.The new proposal will allow
women to serve in the non-officer cadre for the first time in India.
Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Anant Geete mentioned that
the government wasconsidering the extension of a scheme to promote electric and hybrid vehicles by another
six months.The schemes phase-I was introduced from April 1, 2015, to March 31, 2017.The phase was
subsequently extended by six months till September end.
On 8th September 2017, Deputy Director General of the National Apex Agricultural Research Body,
Mr.Narendra Singh Rathore announced that ICAR (Indian Council for Agricultural Research) would
undertake major research works on agriculture, in Chennai.
World Bank granted a fund Rs.1100 crore for this project.
On 7th September 2017, Assam passed the Industrial Disputes (Assam Amendment) Bill, 2017, regarding lay
off of employees, in Guwahati. The law enables employers to lay off up to 300 employees without prior
permission from the government.
Minister of State in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jitendra Singh will
inaugurate the North East Calling festival in New Delhi on 9th of Sept. 2017.
The two-day event is being organised by the Ministry of DoNER under its Destination North East series for
this year.
According to the reports, the national average is 23%; Bengal leads the pack with as high as 77% in new tax
registration under the GST regime in India.States such as Gujarat and Maharashtra are behind West Bengal in
GST registration.
On 9th September 2017, Union Water Resources Minister Mr.Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister of
Maharashtra Mr.Devendra Fadnavis announced a project to link rivers in Maharashtra, in Mumbai. Two major
river linking projects in Maharashtra Par-Tapi-Narmada and Damanganga-Pinjal worth Rs.20,000 crore are
about to start.
The Centre has issued a notice, stating that all the SIM cards have to be linked to Aadhaar before February
2018 to avoid deactivation of the phone numbers.It is being done to prevent criminals, fraudsters, and
terrorists from using SIMs in the name of ordinary citizens.
On September 9,2017, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Sri Lankan counterpart Tilak
Marapana held wide-ranging talks to deepen bilateral relationship between the two countries. It is Marapanas
first overseas visit after assuming charge as foreign minister on 15th August. Marapana also met Prime
Minister Narendra Modi concluding the official part of his three-day visit.
On 11th September 2017, The Union Finance Ministry, has announced that is has planned to launch Project
Insight from October, 2017, in a move to restrict black money holdings and transactions.The aim of this
project is to observe and check high value transactions, and track tax evaders with the help of technology to
restrict black money holdings.
On 11th September 2017, Assam government announced that it would provide skill development training to
30,000 surrendered militants.Mission Director of Assam Skill Development, Mr.A.P.Tiwari said that the skill
development training would be given to 30,000 surrendered militants and jail inmates, during an AIR (All
India Radio) talk show.
The traditional Bonderam festival has started in Divar Island of Goa on 9th September 2017.
The word Bonderam originated from the involvement of flags. This festival starts with a flag which is
accompanied by the brass band.

Committees of the Cabinet. Defence minister Nirmala sitharaman and Railway ministerPiyush whose

On September 12,2017 Himachal Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh inaugurated first phase of 65 MW Kashang
Hydel Project in the tribal Kinnaur district. Kashang Project is being executed by Himachal Pradesh Power
Corporation Limited (HPPCL).It is a 195 MW project (three units of 65 MW each).
On September 11,2017, the PFRDA chairman Hemant Contractor announced at a conference in Delhi that the
upper age limit for joining the National Pension System (NPS) has been raised to 65 years from the current
60. The announcement by PFRDA will allow more people to come under the pension cover as currently only
15-16 per cent of employees in India are covered by pension
The cabinet approves the introduction of the Payment of Gratuity (Amendment) Bill, 2017 in the Parliament.
This amendment will be beneficial for persons who are not covered under CCS (Pension) Rules, at par with
Central Government employees.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approves development of six laning of Narasannapeta-
Ranastalam section of National Highway (NH) 16 in Andhra Pradesh
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approves survey of Un-appraised Areas of Sedimentary Basins
of India. Project cost is Rs. 2932.99 crore spread over five years. The Target year is 2019-2020.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approves doubling of Daund-Manmad Railway Line for
promoting Speedy, Reliable & Safe Service. The estimated cost of the project will be Rs.2,081.27 crore and
completion cost of Rs. 2,330.51 crore with 5% escalation per annum.
Cabinet approves hiving off mobile tower assets of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited into a separate company,
fully owned by BSNL.There are around 4,42,000 mobile towers in the country out of which more than 66,000
mobile tower are of BSNL.
Cabinet approves release of additional 1% Dearness Allowance to Central Government employees and
Dearness Relief to pensioners with effect from 01.07.2017. This move of increasing additional 1% from 4% is
to compensate for price rise as suggested by 7th pay commission.

for establishment of this laboratory is Rs.8 crore.

Karnataka.Civet Coffee is made from the feces of a species of cat called Civet Cat.
On 12th September 2017, Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr. Harsh Vardhan
inaugurated a two-day conference on Sustainable landscapes and forest ecosystems: Theory to Practice, in
New Delhi.He launched the Wood is Good campaign.
On 12th September 2017, the Supreme Court declared that the 6-month cooling off period for granting
divorce can be waived, in New Delhi.The Supreme Court declared that the 6 month cooling off period under
the Hindu Marriage Act for getting divorce is not mandatory. The local judges can decide about waiving off
that period.

The Ministry for Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has launched a nationwide
hackathonOpenGovDataHack to support and showcase potential ideas and talent from inner India.The
hackathon aims to enable participants develop their ideas into apps and infographics primarily by the use of
open government data.
On September 12,2017, Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs(CCEA) approved a Dairy Processing &
Infrastructure Development Fund (DIDF) with an outlay of Rs10,881 crore during the period from 2017-18
to 2028-29.This fund will give new impetus to the dairy industry and to people relying on it.The project will
be implemented by National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and National Dairy Development
Cooperation (NCDC).
India is planning to launch major connectivity initiative, connecting Chennai with key Russian
port Vladivostok via sea route with an aim to harness natural resources from Northeast Asia and Western
Pacific region. This effort by government of India will counter chinas OBOR project.

On september13,2017 Managing Director of National High-Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRC) Achal
Khare informed that high-speed rail training centre worth 600 crore for the first bullet train project will be set
up in Vadodara.This centre will come up on the five hectares of land inside the National Academy of Indian
Railways (NAIR).
On September 12,2017 Keralas Health minister K.K. Shylaja announced that kerla is planning to open Indias
first transgender-exclusive clinics at government medical colleges across the state. The first clinic will be set
up at the government medical college of Kottayam within the next two months and will be one of the two
clinics to provide the sex-change surgery.
On 12th September 2017, Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar launched Mission 24to improve the quality
of life in one of Mumbais poorest wards, in Mumbai. The project is carried out by NGO Apnalaya and
Mumbais Municipal body BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation).

The US Trade and Development Agency has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Airports

On september 15,2017 ,The Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh launched the Swachhta Hi
Sewa campaign of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), at ITBP campus, Tigri. ITBP( Indo Tibetian Border
Force) officers and jawans participated in cleanliness drive around the campus. A Swachhta demonstration by
ITBPs women personnel was presented. Theme song created and composed by ITBP personnel on
cleanliness was also presented.
After a two-week-long protest by farmers the Rajasthan government has announced a Rs 20,000 crore farm-
loan waiver.The government has agreed to waive loans for farmers up to Rs 50,000.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has launched first Intelligence Wing of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and
Welfare & Rehabilita tion Board (WARB) App in New Delhi authorized to Protect the shared borders of India
with Nepal and Bhutan.
On 15th September ,2017, The Assam state Assembly passed PRANAM(Parental Responsibility And Norms
for Accountability and Monitoring ) bill that makes it mandatory for state government employees to take care
of their parents and needy siblings or face a cut in their income.
On September 15,2017 Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi inaugurated
Indias first Centre for Animal Law that has been established at the NALSAR University of Law in
Hyderabad.
On September 15,2017 ayurveda sytudents from across the country have set a new Guinness World Record
for maximum number of people receiving nasya panchakarmatreatment at 1st Rashtriya Ayurved Yuva
Mahotsav, the national event for students of ayurveda.The event was hosted by the National Institute of
Ayurveda (NIA) in Jaipur.

On his 67th birthday on September 17,2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the Sardar Sarovar
dam built on the Narmada river to the nation at Kevadia in the Narmada district, Gujarat. The project was
accomplished by Gujarat governments Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNL). The height of the dam
was recently raised to 138.68 metres.
Centre has signed a loan deal for $76 million with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), for a
project regarding upgradation of environment management plan at Alang-Sosiya ship recycling yards, in
Gujarat. The total cost of the project would be $ 111 million. Out of which $76 million would be provided as
loan from JICA. The project would be completed by 2022.
Indian Navys INS Garhial carries relief material under operation Insaniyat for Rohingya refugees. Indian
Navy will carry around 86 thousand family packs as relief material in the ongoing operation.
On September 14,2017, The Odisha government passed a bill for starting the first Odia language
university for post-graduate in literature, linguistics and epigraphy. After Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra
Pradesh, Odisha became the fourth state in country to have a special university for development of its
language and literature. The university would be established in Bhubaneswar.
On September 17,2017, The government announced that it has exempted import duty for sports items and a
wide range of goods for the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup India.The following goods will also be
exempted from the integrated tax levied under the GST. The 17th edition of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, has
the slogan Football takes over.
On September 17,2017 Jharkhand Government launched the Shaheed Gram Vikas Yojana at Ulihatu
Village ,Khunti district of Jharkhand. BJP President Amit Shah along with Jharkhand Chief Minister
Raghubar Das launched the initiative.The scheme aims at developing the villages of freedom fighters in the
state . Ulihatu Village is the birth place of freedom fighter and Jharkhands tribal icon, Birsa Munda.
On September 18,2017 ,Tripura became the first state in the country to set up family welfare district
committees to deal with the issue of fake and biased complaints by women against their husbands, in-laws and
husbands relatives.These committees have been formed as per the directives if supreme court.
On Sep 18 ,2017 Jammu and Kashmir governor N N Vohra inaugurated the second International Yoga
Festival and International Yoga Sports Championship 2017 in which about 300 people from various parts of
India, Vietnam, Taiwan, Canada, Bulgaria, USA and Nepal are participating.The festival is being organized
by the Yoga Society of Kashmir at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre.
On September 19 2017, The Government of Singapore is proposed to be set up Skill Center at Guwahati by
the year 2019 and Dr Jitendra Singh,the Ministry of DoNER will coordinate in this initiative.

hubs of sporting excellence.

Power Finance Corporation Ltd (PFC) has sanctioned a term loan of Rs 4,009 crore to the Telangana Power
Generation Corporation Lt (TSGENCO) for setting up a 4000 MW Yadadri thermal power plant announced
on 27th Sept. 2017. The Yadadri plant would generate approximately 29,784 million units of energy to meet
the future power requirement of Telangana.

FOREIGN VISITS
Arun Jaitley visit to Japan 2017
On 4th September 2017, Mr.Arun Jaitley left to Japan for a two day visit. During the meeting issues relating to
the US-2 amphibious aircraft were also figured out.
The two sides also agreed to commence technical discussions for research collaboration in the areas
of Unmanned Ground Vehicles and Robotics.
India plans to buy the US-2 ShinMaywa aircraft from Japan for its navy. Last year, China had reacted angrily
to reports that Japan plans to sell weapons to India at cheaper prices, saying that such a move is disgraceful.
Swiss president Doris Leuthard is on a three-day visit to India
Swiss president Doris Leuthard will begin her three day visit to India on August 6 2017. The visit is
significant as Switzerland is the chair of the Nuclear Suppliers Groupwhere India has been seeking
membership.
Both countries will sign trade agreements and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on railway
infrastructure.

Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), under Ministry of Power, Government of India has launched
UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable Lighting for All) Scheme in the State of Melaka, Malaysia on 6th of Sept.
2017. UJALAs impact in Malaysia will bring about clean energy, contribute to climate change targets and
save the already dwindling energy resources.
Lebanese President Michel Aoun has officially signed an animal welfare and protection law. It guarantees that
domestic and wild animals will be legally protected from abuse in the country announced on 30th Aug 2017.
Recently on 18 July 2017 India and China jointly submitted a proposal to the World Trade Organisation
(WTO) calling for the elimination of farm subsidies by developed countries. In WTO context, this trade
distorting farm subsidies is calledAggregate Measurement of Support (AMS) or Amber Box. It is a
prerequisite for consideration of other reforms in domestic support negotiations.
The worlds largest and powerful X-ray laser- European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) presented in
Hamburg, Germany.The XEFL is series of 3.4-kilometer tunnels up to 38 meters underground near the city of
Hamburg.It took 8 years to build 1.5-billion-euro ($1.7 billion) facility.

Nepal has signed UN assistance package for a USD 635 million for 2018-2022. The UNDAF lays out the
development strategy for the UN Country Team for the next five years.

The Department of Financial Services has fined USD 225 million to Pakistans Private lender Habib Bank and
its New York branch announced on 8th Sept. 2017.The bank has failed to comply with laws and regulations
designed to combat money laundering, terrorist financing, and other illicit financial transactions.
Under the state Urban Development department in Tripura, a new underground water treatment plant has been
commissioned at Sadhutilla in the southern part of Agartala inaugurated on 23rd of Sept. 2017. The built-up
cost of this water treatment plant was Rs. 4 crores 99 lakh.
On 25th September 2017, State Bank of India (SBI) opened its sixth branch in Singapore.

The Ministry of Shipping has renamed Kandla Port Trust as Deendayal Port Trust with effect from 25th of
September 2017. Kandla Port, located on the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat, is one of the twelve major ports in the
country.
The Airbus Perlan 2 aircraft has set a new altitude world record for a glider, climbing to 52,172 feet on
3rdSept. in El Calafate, Argentina.The Perlan 2 is a composite-intensive, engineless glider designed to fly at
the edge of space using stratospheric mountain waves.
On 8th September 2017, Jordan launched a project to grow crops from seawater, in Aqaba, port city of Jordan.
They have contributed a major amount of $3.7 million to the project.
On 10th September 2017, Asian Development Bank announced that it would provide $152 million loan to
Nepal, to enhance power transmission, in Kathmandu.

MegaWatt (MW) nuclear power plant in its Punjab province. The fifth nuclear C-4 plant is located at

Oxford and Cambridge named the best universities in the world; IISc, Bangalore tops Indian universities
according to the World University Rankings 2018 was published by the Times Higher Education (THE).
On September 2 ,2017, Forbes an American bi-weeklybusiness magazine published a report stating that India
remains the most corrupt country in the Asia Pacific region. The report was based on a study by Transparency
International.While India remains the most corrupt country in this region, with 69 per cent bribery rates, Japan
came out as the least corrupt nation, with a 0.2 per cent bribery rate, the report said.
India has been ranked 103 on Global Human Capital Index 2017 released by World Economic Forum (WEF).
India has scored the least among the BRICS countries. Norway topped the list.
On 11th September 2017, Global Financial Centres Index 2017 was released, in which London has retained its
1 rank despite major issues regarding Brexit. Mumbai has managed to get 60th rank in the list.
HDFC Bank has retained its No.1 position in the BrandZ India Top 50 report of the year 2017.According to
the reports, the bank is stated to have doubled its brand value from $9.4 billion to $18 billion since 2014.
On 25th September 2017, Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company Rankings was released, with RIL,ONGC
and IOC in the top rankings.1strank was secured by Russian gas firm Gazrpom.2ndrank was bagged by German
utility E.ON.3rdrank was obtained by Indian energy producer, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL). RIL has the
worlds biggest refinery complex.Other Indian firms in the top of the list are Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) in
7th position and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in 11th position.
Acharya Balkrishna, the associate of Baba Ramdev-run FMCG company Patanjali and Radhakishan Damani
of D-Mart are among the top 10 rich people in the country. Balkrishna has ranked eighth in the Hurun India
rich list 2017. His position rose to 8th position from 25th last year after seeing his wealth grow by 173%.
WEF released Global Competitiveness Report 2017 Switzerland at 1st, India at 40th position. On 27th
September 2017, World Economic Forum (WEF) released the Global Competitiveness Report, in Switzerland.
As per HSBC survey India jumps the global rankings by 12 places to take the 14th spot in terms of best
country for expats to live and work in announced on 28th Sept. 2017.The list is topped by Singapore, is part of
HSBCs latest expat explorer survey.
According to a study conducted by a realty consultancy firm Bengaluru is the worlds most affordable
technology hub on 30th Sept. 2017. Among the top 29 global technology hubs covered by the
study, Bengaluru emerged the cheapest in office rentals. Gurugram, another Indian city, comes second.

BANKING & FINANCE


As per the data released by the RBI, old notes worth Rs 15.44 lakh crore were there in the market out of
which 15.28 lakh crore have been received by the bank.It means all but 1.4% of the old Rs 1,000 notes have
come back into the banking system.As per the RBI report about 89 million units of the demonetised Rs 1,000
notes, worth Rs 8,900 crore, had not come back into the system.
On September 1,2017,Fincare Small Finance Bank (previously known as Disha MicrofinLimited) started its
banking operations with about 25 operational branches across Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra
Pradesh.The bank was given final small finance bank (SFB) licence from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in
May this year.Fincare CEO Rajeev Yadav informed that the bank started its operations with 25 branches, out
of which nearly 50 per cent are located in Gujarat.
On September 2,2017, the first project funded by The New Development Bank, set up by India and other
members of the BRICS grouping of emerging economies, has started operation in Shanghai. The $76 million
loan with a maturity length of 17 years was granted to Shanghai Lingang Distributed Solar Power
Project, under an agreement signed in December 2016.
On September 3,2017, Global brokerage firm UBS has lowered Indias GDP growth forecast to 6.6 per cent
from 7.2 per cent.
On September 4,2017, Singapore based bank DBS has got final approval to operate as a wholly-owned
subsidiary (WOS) in India.DBS was the first foreign lender to apply for the new operating WOS model two
years ago and its approval was delayed due to lack of precedent.
China has banned individuals and organisations from raising funds through initial coin offerings (ICO), or
launches of digital currencies announced on 4th of Sept 2017. According to cryptocurrency analysis website
Cryptocompare in total, $2.32 billion has been raised through ICOs, with $2.16 billion of that being raised
since the start of 2017.
RBI has included HDFC Bank in the list of too big to fail lenders, referred to as D-SIB or domestic

On 5th September 2017, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) CEO Mr.Ajay Bhushan
Pandey said that the UIDAI has given banks one more month to open Aadhaar enrolment centres in a
stipulated 10 per cent of branches and will impose Rs.20,000 as fine per uncovered branch after
30th September 2017.
A member of the World Bank Group, International Finance Corporation (IFC) has invested $10 million as
equity in e-commerce firm Power2SME announced on 5th sept 2017. It will helps small and medium

Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (IIM-L) and Yes Bank has tied up with the purpose of spreading

According to the Ujjivan Small Finance Bank it will bring down its cost of funds by up to 150 basis points
during the current financial year.It has replaced 75% of its bank loans with borrowings using money market

Punjab National Bank and BSNL has joined hands to roll out open mobile wallet Speedpay across 10 states in
the country announced on 8th Sept. 2017.PNBs Speedway wallet will operate like any other mobile wallet for
paying bills, recharging phone. Its users will be able to deposit and withdraw money from authorized retail
outlets.
On 8th September 2017, United Bank of India announced that is has removed processing fee for retail home
loans, car loans and two-wheeler loans, in Kolkata. The processing fee waiver will be available till December,
2017.
Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) had imposed Rs 2,423 crore fine on PACL Ltd and its four
directors for illegal fund mobilisation through various schemes.
Exide Life Insurance has announced a partnership with Punjab & Maharashtra Co-operative Bank (PMC
Bank) to offer its protection and savings products to the existing customers.Exide Life Insurance works with
around 50 banks.
SBI Life Insurance has received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India for an IPO of up to
Rs 8,400 crore ($1.3 billion), with launch targeted for the September 20-22 period. ICICI Lombard General
Insurance Company has got approval from capital markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India
(SEBI)s which could be the first by a general insurer in the country.

OTP (One Time Password) for opening e-Insurance Account (eIA) as an alternative to electronic signature, in
New Delhi.

RBI will introduce Rs 100 coins to mark the birth centenary of MG Ramachandran. He was the AIADMK

with one of the projects limited to 60 % of the value of assets.SEBI has also allowed strategic investors to
participate in REITS, similar to InvITs.

would be treated as Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFC).Peer-to-peer lending (P2P) platforms have

Under the Centres affordable housing scheme, the interest subsidy of up to Rs 2.60 lakh on home loans will
now be available to middle income group (MIG) beneficiaries for 15 more months till March 2019.Under
CLSS, MIG beneficiaries with annual income of above Rs 6 lakh and up to Rs 12 lakh would get an interest
subsidy of 4% on a 20-year loan component of Rs 9 lakh.
On 25th September 2017, SBI (State Bank of India) reduced service charges for not maintaining monthly
average (MAB) balance by 20-50%.The minimum balance requirement in metro centres are reduced to
Rs.3,000. The charges for not maintaining MAB at semi-urban and rural centres vary from Rs.20 to Rs.40.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has barred banks from investing in category III alternative investment funds
(AIFs), specified norms for their participation in commodity derivatives clearing on investing in financial
services firms announced on 25th of Sept. 2017. Banks may invest as much as 10% in the paid-up capital/unit
capital in category I and II funds, but cannot invest in category III funds.
ICICI Bank will partner with e-commerce firms to provide automated payday loan-type credit to customers at
the bottom of the digital pyramid. The pay later facility will be available to even those who have not availed
of any loan in the past and for small amounts of up to Rs 20,000.
Markets regulator SEBI has imposed a penalty of Rs 4 lakh on Swagruha Infrastructure Ltd

SWIFT India has announced that Citibank and Standard Chartered Bank have joined the Indian services as

On 27th September 2017, IDBI Bank said that it has sold 9 % stake in Small Industries Development Bank of
India (SIDBI). The amount for which the 9 % stake was sold is undisclosed. This has been done in a move to

On 29th September 2017, The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) allowed Sovereign Wealth
Funds and other long term Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) to buy up to Rs.9,500 crore worth corporate debt
in infrastructure sector. This has been done, following the Reserve Bank of Indias (RBIs) decision to
exclude masala bonds (foreign investment in rupee denominated bonds) from the Combined Corporate Debt
Limit (CCDL).
The state-owned Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (Ireda) became the first Indian financial
institution to raise funds overseas announced on 30th Sept. 2017. The five-year dated bond raised
approximately $300 million (Rs19.5 billion), with a coupon of 7.125%.It became the first Green Masala Bond
to be listed on the International Securities Market (ISM).
State Bank of India (SBI) has raised shares worth over Rs 99 crore as part of a share buyback programme by
its subsidiary SBI DFHI on 29th Sept. 2017. Currently, SBI holds the largest shareholding of 72.17% in the

HCL has announced that it has agreed to buy Datawave a business unit of ETL Factory Limited, a UKbased
company to accelerate data integration and migration for their clients.
On 6th September 2017, State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) partnered with Coriant, a US-based
packet optical and mobile routing solutions company to study and deploy 5G-based industrial internet
applications for enterprise customers in New Delhi.
On 8th September 2017, Tierra Agrotech Private Limited, a Hyderabad based company acquired Monsanto
Holdings, a US based cotton Seed Company, in New Delhi.
On 11th September 2017, Infosys announced that it has acquired London-based product design firm Brilliant

The Gujarat government has signed a MoU with Google India for Digital Gujarat movement under Digital

Assam government has signed a MoU with Google India Pvt. Ltd. to increase digital literacy and takeInternet

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has constituted a steering committee to monitor and coordinate the
states drug de-addiction and rehabilitation programme announced on 26th of Sept. 2017. The decision to set up
the committee, headed by the state chief secretary, was taken by the chief minister at a meeting of the State
Board of Drug De-addiction and Rehabilitation.
On 28th September 2017, a committee headed by Mr.T.K.Viswanathan, submitted a report to the Home
Ministry, regarding new laws or amendments to deal with hate speech on the internet, in New Delhi.The
committee has suggested that section 78 of the IT Act needs to be substituted and Section 153 & 505A of the
Indian Penal Code needs to be amended.
Insurance regulator IRDAI has formed a ten-member committee to help in implementing the new risk-based
capital (RBC) regime and it will also enhance protection to policyholders. The RBC Committee headed by
Dilip C Chakraborty. He suggested that the industry should move ahead with RBC to ensure that capital held
by a company will take into account its overall risk profile.

Karnataka government will merge the existing seven health schemes to launch a unified health scheme-
Arogya Bhagya. It will cover all 1.4 crore households of the state. The main theme of the Arogya Bhagya

Sweden hosts huge war games exercise with NATO. It is biggest military exercise in more than 20 years with
support from NATO countries.Sweden is not a member of NATO but the exercise, called Aurora, involves
19,000 troops and will replicate an attack from the east on the Baltic island of Gotland, near the Swedish

submarine rescue operations and called Dynamic Monarch.It will take place in Turkish waters in the
Mediterranean Sea off the resort city of Marmaris.
On 26th September 2017, INS Tarasa, a Water Jet Fast Attack Craft (FAC) was commissioned into the Indian
Navy by Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command at the
Naval Dockyard, in Mumbai.INS Tarasa is 50 m long.It is powered by three water jets, with speed more than
35 knots (65 km/hr).It is equipped with a 30 mm main gun and several light, medium and heavy machine

A new interceptor boat (V-409) which is built by Bharathi Defence and Infrastructure Limited (BDIL)
waslaunched at a function held at the Mangaluru Coast Guard yard on The 28-metre long, V-409 interceptor
boat has aluminium hull and fitted with new generation of Arneson Surface Drive (ASD) which is drive by
two powerful diesel engines of 1650 KW each.
Pakistan and Russia will hold a two-week long military exercise which mainly focuses on counter-terrorism
operations. It enhances defence ties between the two countries.The joint exercise DRUZBA 2017 between
special forces of Pakistan and Russia Armies started in Minralney Vody, Russia.
