Social Media Day Assignment

Personal thoughts

I have had many new experiences with social media platforms since I
started studying in Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences. I have cre-
ated professional accounts on Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn. The first
two I am familiar with, but LinkedIn I have previously only heard of through
Internet and TV. I think following many Youtube channels and its creators
has made me better aware of the number of different social media net-
works out there, but I have never felt the need of using all of them.
On Social Media Day I realised how important this fairly new feature in all
business is, so I felt obligated to jump on the same train and add these ac-
counts to my previous collection of Facebook-, Instagram-, Youtube-,
Whatsapp- and Snapchat- profiles.

Instagram

Professional Instagram I have updated many times a week with school-

related posts, but I feel like the fact that I have never used Twitter actively
for other than occasional scrolling makes it difficult for me to use it and re-
member its benefits for my future career. The amount of school projects we
have has decreased the use of my personal Instagram quite a bit. I have
tried to make beneficial content there - as that is the idea and concept be-
hind it - but I lack time and energy to do both that and schoolwork. The
idea of Instagram being a place to share pictures instead of text makes it a
unique platform, but as the time has passed it has also become a place of
hidden and false advertising, high-quality photography and unrealistic
beauty standards that a popular profile needs to keep up with. Still, through
the platform the companies of travelling industry as well as other busi-
nesses can build their image and let the customers know them in the most
personal way there is. Commenting pictures is so effortless many leave
their feedback and questions there, and if the company behind the account
answers in a satisfying way, the commenter may become a happy cus-
tomer. Without a doubt the most useful feature of Instagram to any user is
still followers sharing pictures or the account. Tagging friends and ac-
quaintances can make a picture or video go viral all around the globe
reaching thousands of eyes free of charge. Instagram is already getting
more and more commonly used within business industry. To advertise a
product company can negotiate with a popular person with a big number of
followers on the platform and offer them a deal where the content creator
advertises the product in exchange to a commission. I can see this kind of
cooperation getting even more popular in the future.

Youtube

Visual networks in general attract audience. For me personally Youtube

has been my lifeline and way to get my thoughts out of stressful and com-
plex life situations, and that has not changed since I graduated from upper
secondary school. It is not a typical example of a text-based social media
platform, but people do connect through it and share even the most per-
sonal situations in life as well as professional and business-like content in
a video form. It is a great place for advertising and creating certain images

of companies, products and destinations. It works well together with other

websites and social medias as well because the user can share the link of
a video to their Facebook, Google +, Twitter or Tumblr simply by clicking or
tapping a single button. I think Youtube has a lot of potential. More and
more people are finding it every day, as it has diverse content to all audi-
ences and target groups, not only cat videos. Downsides are mostly the
copyright-issues and comments. Anyone can take credit of someone elses
work, even though the rules of Youtube are strict. As most people have
anonymous profiles or nicknames there, comments can be full of suspi-
cious spam links and the user spreading them doesnt get caught.

Facebook

Quite the opposite to Youtube there is Facebook. A platform where most of

the people use their own names and profile pictures and can share de-
tailed information about their life from their wedding day to where they
work. Many people also use its Messenger to chat with each other, as it
doesnt matter where in the globe the other person is. It is the most used
social media network in the world with over 2 billion monthly active users
according to Mark Zuckerbergs post from July 27th this year, so for a
company using it for advertising purposes is almost a must to have a page
in there. It is also a place where they can keep their customers updated
with their campaigns, offers and products, and even changes in their open-
ing hours and contact information. Customers can even rate companies
from one to five stars. Sometimes that can be harmful, because some rate
the company and service badly without first contacting the companys cus-
tomer service so they can figure out a satisfying solution for the issue. The
word can spread quickly in all platforms, but especially in Facebook as it is
such a widespread network.

Social Media tracking tools

I have never used Hootsuite, Tweetdeck or any other tool like that to track
sites, nor have ever heard of them. According to the Hootsuite website, it is
a place to manage ones social media on over 35 commonly used plat-
forms including Twitter, Youtube, Facebook and Instagram. After visiting
the page I do feel like I should start looking into it. Tweetdeck seems like
an interesting place as well. On Tweetdeck one can control their Twitter
account and search tweets by a specific topic. For a popular and active
Twitter user it must be a necessary tool, but I do not feel like I need it just
yet as I am focusing on getting to know the actual website better at the mo-
ment.
