Job Position: Permanent position (CDI) of Library Assistant at Mohammed VI Library

Mohammed VI Library invites internal and external applicants for the position of Library
Assistant.

Reporting Line

The Library Assistant reports to the User Services Supervisor.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

To carry out general reserve and circulation transactions: check in and check out, renew
booked materials, place holds, etc;
To do shelve-reading, sort books, publications, and other items according to established
procedures and see to it that the collection is well organized;
To process on-line reserve materials for faculty using FTP server;
To guide and instruct patrons how to find and use library resources, including reference
materials, audiovisual equipment, computers, electronic resources, card catalogs, OPAC
(On-line Public Catalog-);
To inspect returned books for condition and due-date status, compute and collect any
applicable fines;
To attend workshops about library databases, electronic resources, Millennium modules
and library collection development;
To enforce respect of rules and regulations by library patrons;

To provide library Instruction Workshops to library patrons);


To create Millennium account for Library users;
To lead orientations, tours and visits inside the library;
To provide assistance and training to part time job students;
To Collaborate with Technical Services staff;
To prepare monthly and annual statistics of library use;
To perform other tasks, duties and various projects as assigned.
Knowledge:

Basic knowledge of library services, practices and procedures;


Basic knowledge of Library classification system (Library of Congress);
Basic knowledge of Millennium cataloguing, circulation and reserve modules;
Familiarity with searching and using the OCLC system;
Basic knowledge of library on-line databases;
Good knowledge of English.

Skills:

Good verbal and written communication skills in English, French & Arabic;
Good computer skills;
Customer service orientation (actively looks for ways to help users);
Adaptability and flexibility.

Abilities:

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers,


supervisors and patrons;
Ability to handle multiple tasks;
Team spirit, attention to details; organization, time & stress management, and self-control.

Education and professional certifications:

Required: A bachelor's degree or equivalent:

Preferably good command of English and any English Certificate is a plus.

Preferred: Library science degree.

Type and Length of experience:

Preferred: No previous experience is required for this position

A. Working Environment:

Strong team spirit, cooperation and integrity are main vehicles for success. Position
requires the ability to move and shelve heavy books. Position works varying work schedules and
includes evening and weekend duties.
B. Tools & Equipment:

The tasks and duties of the Library Assistant are performed using specific techniques and
tools. The tools and equipment used include, but are not limited to, Library automated system,
telephone, fax, Intranet, Internet, scanner and photocopier.

C. Supervision:

Supervision Received: The Library Assistant reports directly to the User Services
Supervisor. The nature of supervision received ranges from close to moderate. Supervision by the
User Services Supervisor is exercised on a daily basis and is mainly about collection organization,
fine collection, library notices, online course reserves.... The work involves minimal autonomy
and independent judgment.

Supervision Exercised: No direct supervision is exercised by the Library Assistant, apart


from providing some assistance and training to part time job students.

D. Problem Solving, Decision making and creativity:

Decisions and/or problem resolutions are repetitive and simple and typically guided by
standard operating policies and procedures. Cases which deviate from established methods are
referred to supervisor.

E. Interactions:

The position requires daily interactions with the internal public mainly. These
interactions can be face to face, in workshops, via emails, fax, by telephone, etc):

Internally:

i. Patrons: about circulation transactions, reserved items, fine complaints, research


material;
ii. AUI employees: library transactions and use of OPAC (Online Public Access
Catalog);
iii. Faculty: library transactions and on-line course reserves;
iv. Business Office: fine deduction and library clearance;
v. Enrollment, Housing and OIP: students information;
vi. EEC: loan transactions.

Externally:

i. Occasional contact with Alumni about using the universitys library resources
ii. Researchers and PHD students from other universities who can have access to the
librarys facilities and resources.
F. Impact on Institutional Mission:

The positive impact of actions carried by the position of traibissAaaraLbiL can be can be
measured through user satisfaction level (students, faculty, and staff) of with the performance of
staff. The negative impact carried by this position can be shown in errors that may result in
dissatisfied library users, workflow disturbance and loss of time to find and correct mistakes.
