FOOD ACTS AND REGULATIONS ON BARLEY PRODUCTS

Based on Canadian Priority Allergen in the regulations of gluten, on Canadian Food And
Drug B.01.010.1(1), any gluten protein from the grain of any following cereal or the grain of
hybridized strain created from at least one of the following cereals :

Barley
Oats
Rye
Triticale
Wheat (all species including kamut and spelt)

Added for allergens, gluten and sulphites in 10ppm or higher, must be declared either in the
list of the ingredients or in the statement contains ... on the products packaging to inform
the consumers.

Next, in the United States Food And Regulation specifically in requirement for cereal,
pulses and legumes and derived products, for barley based product, it stated that the barley
shall be the grain of Hordeum vulgare L shall not contain

a) More than 14.0% m/m moisture


b) More than 4.0% m/m foreign matter
c) More than 4.0% m/m damaged grains

As for in Malaysia, stated in Malaysian Food Act 1983 Food Regulations ( Transferation ) (
no 2) 2009, by section 34 Food Act 1983 [ Act 281 ], that has been officially used by January
1st 2010, the ministers have approved the following regulations in Regulation Transfer 11 no

(a) To insert after the (1)(a) paragraph with the following paraghraph:
(ea) if the ingredients in known to cause hypersensitivity, a statement to indicate
that the product may cause hypersensitivity should be made and
(b) To insert after the sub regulation (4) with the following sub regulation:
to indicate the meaning of paragraph (ea) sub regulation 1, the imgredients
contains in the product that may caused hypersensitivity which includes
a) Gluten based cereal including wheat, rye, barley and oats.
b) Nuts and nut based products includes groundnuts and soy beans
c) Fish and fish based products
d) Milk and milk based products includes lactose and
e) Egg and egg based products
