1. Find the mean for the discrete random variable X having the frequency distribution
fi 2 1 4
2. An event E will occur with probability P (E) = 0.83. What is the P (E)?
3. A bag contains 4 green marbles, 3 orange marbles, and 2 yellow marbles. A marble is drawn at random
and not replaced. What is the probability of drawing 3 green marbles in a row?
4. Find the probability of rolling a 4 at least once in two tosses of a fair die.
5. Find the 35th percentile, P35 , for the data set: 2 2 3 4 5 5 5 6.
6. Box A contains 3 red and 2 blue marbles. Box B contains 2 red and 8 blue marbles. A fair coin is
tossed. If the coin turns up heads, a marble is chosen from Box A; if it turns up tails, a marble is chosen
from Box B. Find the probability that a red marble is chosen.

7. Determine whether the function f (x) = for x = 0, 1, 2 defines a probability distribution function.

8. During a baseball game, the star hitter is expected to go to bat 5 times. The likelihood that she will
make a grand slam is 82%. What is the probability that she will hit a grand slam exactly on her third
time at bat?
9. Ten percent of tools produced in a certain manufacturing process turn out to be defective. Find the
probability that in a sample of 10 tools chosen at random, exactly 2 will be defective using the Poisson
approximation to the binomial distribution.
10. A box contains 7 blue marbles and 4 red marbles. An experiment is performed in which a marble is
chosen at random and its color is observed, but the marble is not replaced. Find the probability using
the Hypergeometric distribution that after 3 trials of the experiment, 4 blue marbles will have been
chosen.
11. In a lottery there are 100 prizes of $5, 10 prizes of $25, and 5 prizes of $100. Assuming that 20, 000
tickets are to be issued and sold, what is a fair price to pay for a ticket?
12. Find the variance of the sum obtained in rolling a pair of fair dice.
13. In a game of poker 5 cards are drawn from a pack of 52 well-shuffled cards. Find the probability that
4 are aces.
14. Find the moment generating function for a binomial random variable with parameter p = 0.6.
15. Use the normal approximation to the binomial distribution to find the probability that if 20% of the
memory chips in a certain plant are defective and 100 are chosen at random for inspection that at most
15 will be defective.

17. A corporation is selling a product in an area where 30% of the people live in the city; the rest live in the
suburbs. 20% of the city dwellers (urbanites) use this product; and 10% of the suburbanites use this
product. Use Bayes theorem to determine what percentage of the people currently using this product
are city dwellers.
18. If 20% of bolts produced by a machine are defective, determine the probability that out of 14 bolts
chosen at random, at least 10 be will defective.
19. An urn contains 4 red, 3 orange, and 3 blue marbles. Two marbles are randomly selected. Let X be
the number of orange marbles selected. Find the formula for the distribution (including the name) and
use it to determine the probability that at most one orange ball will be selected.
20. Use the normal approximation to the binomial distribution to find the probability of getting between 3
and 6 heads inclusive in 10 tosses of a fair coin.

find P (X 1).
22. If a publisher of non-technical books ensures that its books are free of typos so that the probability of
any given page containing at least one such error is 0.01 and errors are independent from page-to-page,
find the probability that at most two pages are with errors assuming each book has 400 pages.
