GRIEF AND LOSS SUPPORT GROUP in Kaslo for 6
weeks, consecutive Friday afternoons, 2:30-4pm, Oct. 13-
Nov. 17. When someone you love has died you will experi-
ence your own form of mourning that can be frightening,
painful and lonely. No words can take away the pain but
trained facilitators and a supportive group can be compan-
ions on your journey. You can learn to adjust to the loss
and also regain hope and energy for the future. This group
is offered free of charge by the Hospice Society of North
Kootenay Lake with thanks to the Community Fund of
North Kootenay Lake, the Victorian Hospital of Kaslo Auxil-

INSURANCE ALERT
ATTENTION BC HOMEOWNERS
I was shocked this summer to learn that I did not have
the fire insurance coverage I thought I did. Did you
know that if your home is destroyed in a forest fire you
must rebuild on the same site in order to collect? This
works fine on lots in cities and towns but if you live in
a forested or recreational area, who wants to rebuild
on a burnt out, blackened, wasteland. Not only is your
property now practically worthless, your insurance only
pays out if you rebuild on the same site. Regardless of
the cause of loss, some people may not wish to rebuild.
There is an inexpensive rider to cover a full payout in-
stead. Myself, I feel it was negligent of the insurance
company (who know where you live) not to mention
this important detail, especially in an area of high rural
and recreational density. They say its all covered in the
fine print.
Policy changes were not allowed all summer long be-
cause of the forest fire situation. All those who are con-
cerned are now able to contact their insurance agent
for immediate clarification and or action.

The purpose of the Fund is to provide local financial support for
important projects that will contribute to the conservation of our
valuable natural areas. Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund
(KLLCF) funding is available for conservation projects that result in the
reduction to a known threat to biodiversity. The themes for the Fund
are water conservation, wildlife and habitat conservation, and open
space conservation.

Kaslo Health Select Committee
September Report
James Morris appeared as a delegation to update
the Committee on the plans of the Health Services
Society, followed by discussion for clarification. The
Committee reissued the invitation for the HSS to sit
as a member of the HSC in order to work together
on shared goals and keep each other up-to-date.
Meetings are held every two months and are open
to the public. If you have an interest in serving on
the committee please attend to check it out. The
next meeting is November 13 on the second floor
of the Kemball Building.
An Open House with Flu Clinic will be held at the
Kaslo Primary Health Centre on November 7th. Look

Telehealth update - Some doctors are engaging
directly with their patients at home via Telehealth;
others use the site at the Primary Health Centre.

the sugar from carbohydrates every day in order to
function properly.
Fact or Fiction: Carbohydrates can be found in
fruits, vegetables, milk, nuts, grains, seeds and
legumes.
FACT! Naturally occurring carbohydrates can
be found in all those foods. Dont shy away from
healthy foods because they may contain carbohy-
drates. In addition to carbohydrates, these foods
contain fibre, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.
Fact or Fiction: Some sources of carbohydrate
are healthier than others.
FACT! Processed foods such as white bread and
fruit juice are less healthy than whole grain and
unprocessed foods. Whole foods are better choices.
They still have all of the nutrients and fibre intact.
Here are some tips to help you make
healthier choices:
Breakfast cereals often contain added sugar. Opt
for oatmeal with fruit or whole grain toast
and nut butter instead.
Read the ingredients list when choosing bread.
Look for 100 per cent whole grain as the first
ingredient.
Eat whole fruits instead of drinking juice.
Aim for fresh, frozen and canned fruits and vege-
tables without added sugar.
Choose plain yogurt and top with fresh or frozen
fruit for sweetness.
Try to have at least one fruit or vegetable with
every meal or snack

 Trust strengthens child care
in the Basin
The Child Care Support Program will help sustain
and grow quality licensed child care in the Basin, said
Johnny Strilaeff, president and CEO, Columbia Basin
Trust. The child care sector has several complex issues,
including affordability of child care for families, inad-
equate supply of child care spaces and a shortage of
qualified professional staff to work in the sector. We are
helping to address those issues with this new program.
Over the next three years, the Trusts new Child Care
Support Program will provide:
Capital grants to support improvements to exist-
ing facilities and construct new child care spaces.
Training support for Early Childhood Educators
to help fill workforce gaps and meet professional
development needs.
A Program Advisor to support child care provid-
ers and work with the sector to find solutions for
common business challenges.
There are 2,600 child care spaces in the Basin, yet
there is demand for more spaces, more staff and
more training for staff.

RDCK residents conserve water!
Residents and business owners were successful in con-
serving water in all of the RDCK water systems this sum-
mer. Water conservation measures are normally in place
from June 1 to September 30 every year for RDCK water
systems, and are effective in reducing peak demand as a
result of outdoor irrigation during the hot and dry sum-
mer months. This year, stricter water conservation mea-
sures were in place in the Balfour, McDonald Creek,
Riondel, Woodland Heights, and Erickson Water Systems
due to significant demand increase in combination with

Category 2 fires were again permit-
ted within the Columbia Fire Zone
in the Southeast Fire Centre due
to a decreased risk of wildfire in

Gray Creek Pass reopens
The Gray Creek Pass has reopened after the back coun-
try forest fire closures, combined with a bridge replace-
ment project that occurred between September 2 and 29.
With this new improvement, all nine bridges are now solid
cement. Precast concrete sections for this bridge were sup-
plied by Rapid Span Precast Ltd of Armstrong BC.
The Pass is a seasonal route, usually open between July
1 and mid to late October, depending on early snowfalls
at the 6800 foot summit. Unlike most forest roads, it has
signs, cement curbing and a recreation site at Oliver Lake.
Although the lake is not visible from the road, it is well
worth taking ten minutes to walk through some 400 year
old larches to this tiny alpine gem.

Conserve water contd from pg 36
to the success of the water conservation efforts. Two sum-
mer ambassadors were able to attend community events,
deliver educational workshops, knock on over 500 doors
to provide water conservation information, respond to
overwatering concerns and complete 89 Water Smart
assessments in participating water systems. The main
objective of the 2017 Water Smart program was raising
local awareness of sustainable water use. Xeriscaping, the
practice of planting drought tolerant and native plant spe-
cies which can reduce water usage by 50%, was promoted
to RDCK water users.
In Erickson, water meters installed for 22 properties
with commercial orchards were regularly monitored and
usage was presented to the owner-operators with the aim
to optimize irrigation and reduce peak demand in the
Erickson Water System.
The RDCK appreciates the cooperation of water users
in adhering to the water conservation measures. As of
October 1, all Water Conservation Measures have been
rescinded in the RDCK Water Systems.

ELECTOR REGISTRATION
(For voting day only registration)
There is no need to pre-register to vote as the registration of all electors for this election will take place at the time of voting. You will be
required to make a declaration that you meet the following requirements:
18 years of age or older on general voting day
Canadian citizen
resident of BC for at least 6 months immediately preceding the day of registration
resident of OR registered owner of real property in the Village of Kaslo for at least 30 days immediately
preceding the day of registration, and
not disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or other-
wise disqualified by law.
Resident electors must produce 2 pieces of identification (at least one with a signature). Picture identification is not necessary. The identi-
fication must prove both residency and identity.
Non-resident property electors must produce 2 pieces of identification (at least one with a signature) to prove identity, proof that they are
entitled to register in relation to the property, and, if there is more than one owner of the property, written consent from the majority of the
property owners.
MAIL BALLOT VOTING
Qualified electors may vote by mail if they:
have a physical disability, illness or injury that affects their ability to vote at another voting opportunity, OR
expect to be absent from the Village of Kaslo on general voting day and at the times of all advance voting opportunities.

REQUESTING A MAIL BALLOT PACKAGE:

Before 4 pm on November 3, 2017 you must submit the following information to the Village office by mail (312 Fourth Street, PO Box 576

Address of the property in relation to which you are voting (for non-resident property electors)
Method of delivery of your mail ballot package:

regular letter mail through Canada Post to residential address, OR
regular letter mail through Canada Post to an alternate address that you provide when requesting the ballot package
If you are not on the list of electors, to ensure you receive the correct registration application form in your package, you must indicate
whether you are going to be registering as a resident or non-resident property elector.
The Village will send out mail ballot packages commencing on or about October 20, 2017. To be counted, your mail ballot must be received
by the Chief Election Officer no later than 8 pm on Saturday, November 4, 2017.
