Police investigate nurse’s death NEWPORT — Police have taken saliva, hair and blood samples from an inmate at the Hamilton County Justice Center this week as part of their investigation imto the death of Retha Welch of New- port. Ms. Welch, 54, a nurse and ordained minister, was found beaten and stabbed in her apartment on Columbia Street on April-13; Police have learned that the man had exchanged letters with Ms. Welch while he was a prisoner at the Chillicothe Correctional Institute for rape and robbery. The man, who has not been charged, was paroled on Jan. 20, the ar- rested for a parole violation on April 16.
