Visakhapatnam, February 11- As a step towards encouraging and directing

students to take up Automobile as their career option, SAE GITAM collegiate

club, Department of Mechanical Engineering, GITAM University organised a
Five-day Internship Training Programme on Engine Technology in
collaboration with Rectangle Automotive Technologies. More than 130
students attended this workshop from the field of mechanical Engineering
from various colleges around Visakhapatnam.

The training programme`s main objectives are: Firstly, to motivate and identify
those students who are particularly interested in the field of Automobiles and
providing a platform for them where they can enhance their technical skills.
The programme also strives to create a platform of creativity and innovation
by introducing various recent trends in the world of Automobiles. Secondly, to
update students with latest technologies. Thirdly, To interact with the highly
skilled professionals present at the workshop and learn about the real time
needs and requirements of different aspects of an automobile.

The programme was inaugurated by the chief guest of honour Prof. K.Lakshmi
Prasad, Principal, Gitam Institute of Technology, GU along with Prof.
C.Dharmaraj, Vice-Principal, Gitam Institute of Technology, GU and Prof.
M.R.S.Satyanarayana, Head of the Department, Mechanical Engineering. The
invited resource persons to this workshop are Dr. P.V. Manivannan, Assistant
professor, IIT Madras along with Dr.P.Karthikeyan, Associate Professor, PSG
College of Technology and Mr.S.D.Suraj, Founder and CEO, Rectangle
Automotive Technologies.

Such an initiation is very important to direct those students interested in

Automobile sector. Getting a degree is not sufficient to be successful and stand
out in the crowd. Students need to have practical exposure so that they could
learn better. I hope that with this initiation the students make use the most of
their time for their benefit and scale to great heights. as addressed by Chief
Guest, Prof. K.Lakshmi Prasad, Principal, GITAM University.

Followed by the inaugural, the session was presided over by Dr.P.V.

Manivannan on Automotive Electronics and the hierarchical concepts of IC
Engine. His rich experiences in the field of Electronics gave a kick start to
students learning the topics. The main objective of this lecture was to teach
students the impact of inter-disciplinary learning of IC Engines and Electronics
in the form of Censors, electronic systems etc. Dr.Manivannan started the
session by introduction to basic components of an automotive vehicle.
Followed by that he helped students broaden their focus on Censor Systems
and Actuator Mechanisms.

The afternoon session was taken over by the speaker Dr.P. Karthikeyan, who
explored the world of Fuel-Cell Technology. His lecture on the different types
of Fuel-Cell technologies in the market and a live Demonstration of a fuel-cell
in the classroom helped students to have a comprehensive approach to
learning.

Day-2 Session was continued on the Industrial point of view of Materials and
Manufacturing Methods by Mr. Raghavendra Rangaswamy, who`s rich
experience in TATA Motors and TVS helped students understanding the real
time aspects and importance of materials in industry and how material
management and selection of materials is responsible for the successful
running of an automobile.

Followed by his lecture, A lecture on Hybrid Engines and Drive Trains was taken
over by Dr. Ravindra S.Kulkarni, who`s experience in guiding students in
fabricating the Formula Hybrid vehicle , helped students in understanding the
concept of Hybrids. He made his lecture quite informative by making students
think of the unthinkable. His approach to Hybrids helped students
understanding the importance of Hybrid technology in the present scenario.

Day-3 and Day-4 was fun oriented with informative interactions. The theory
session was presided over by the Mr.S.D.Suraj, CEO of Rectangle Technologies.
Followed by the Afternoon sessions of practical exposure of Dis-Assembling
and Assembling 8 engines in 2 sub-divisions of 8 teams, each with a student
team of 8 members. The teams enjoyed learning the internal components of
an engine. The Engines brought for this practical days are TATA Indica, Hero
Honda Splendor, TVS Victor, Pulsar series 180 & 220, 1.2 L and1.4 L petrol and
diesel engines.

Day-5 Session was innovative as well as inspiring too.Dr. M Vijay Tarak,

Catterpillar inc, presided over the lecture of the last day. His lecture on
Turbochargers and Emmision control systems will broaden the scope of
environmental safety and industrial point of measures in minimizing the
emmisions caused by the engine.
