Prabhate Karadarshanam ||

This is a morning prayer called karadarshana. One begins the day with this prayer. Kara means the palm
of the hand and it stands for the five karmendriyas, or the organs of action. While looking at the palm, one
invokes the Lord in the form of various deities, thus sanctifying all the actions that will be done during the
day. By acknowledging the Lord as the giver of the capacity to perform actions and as the giver of the fruits
of those actions, one sanctifies the actions. Thus, one prays in the morning to reinforce the attitude that all
actions are performed as a service to the Lord.

This shloka is to be recited in the morning. On the tip of your fingers is Goddess Lakshmi; on the base of
your fingers is Goddess Sarasvati; in the middle of your fingers is Lord Govinda. In this manner, look at your
palm.

So, every morning, one should have a reverent look at ones hand which represents sincere labor.

I bow to Mother Earth, who has mountains and jungles on her body and whose clothing is made by the
ocean. The wife of Lord Vishnu, please pardon me for touching you with my feet.

It is considered propitious to start the day with this sincere prayer.

<Audio of the shloka>

When is this shloka said?

When you first wake up in the morning, before putting your foot on the ground, take a deep
breath, say this shloka. Then place your feet gently down.

What vibrations does this shloka have ?

When recited everyday, this shloka increases awareness of our surroundings and an overall
sense of gratitude especially towards our earth and universe.

Lets see what this shloka means and what it's metaphors are.

Meaning

The key phrase of this shloka is "Kshamasva Me" meaning Please Forgive.

Samudra Vasane - One who has oceans as her garments

Devi - O lady

Parvatha Sthana Mandale - One who has mountains as her bosoms

Vishnu Patni - The wife of Vishnu

Namasthubhyam - I salute to you

Padasparsham - the touch of my feet on you

Kshamasva Me - Please forgive

Inner Meaning

By talking about the Ocean and Mountains, we are shown all the natural resources at our
disposal. The word Vishnu means "all pervading" / "All the time". By calling Earth Vishnu Patni,
a gentle reminder that whatever we want, we can get from Earth. "Sparsha" is a touch - not an
ordinary touch. It's like the touch of a child - soft, gentle. By using the word "Sparsha", Our
ancestors ask us touch the earth like we touch a baby. In other words, be responsible in the
way we use our resources.
Finally - the forgiveness here is not "Forgive me - I will not do this again" equivalent. Its more
like "Please excuse me". The word here is not begging forgiveness. Its a word which carries
strength with it. We are saying,

"I know I will do this. I am going to use you(rs). I will take care not to hurt you in the
process."

In fact this word survives in many Indian languages with the same connotation today
(Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi).

So metaphorically, We are saying - Earth, you give me everything. I will be using your
resources today in many many ways. Thank You for all that you give me. Let me do this
responsibly.

Teaching this shloka to kids with the meaning, we can make them responsible for our
environment from a very early age.

According to Hindu belief , submergence in holy Ganges washes away all sin and mundane
sufferings. The ghats on the bank of river Ganga are pilgrimage places of rights, rituals and
centre of music and learning. One can enjoy a boat ride along the banks of river Ganga to
see the attractions of various ghats.
The famous ghats include Dasaswmedh ghat, Panchaganga ghat, manikarnika ghat, and
harishchandra ghat. Manikarnika and harishchandra ghats are places where the flames from the
burning pyre are seen although out day and night. Manikarnika ghat is considered liberation place
of kashi .According to Hindu mythology, goddess Shiva promised lord Vishnu that, those people
whose last rights will be performed in the burning pyre of manikarnika will get himself released
from the cycle of birth and death and would be blessed with instant passport to heaven. It is
therefore believed auspicious if someone dies in this city or his last rites are performed in burning
pyre of manikarnika. Many dead bodies come for cremation from various parts of the country and
across the globe to the manikarnika. The flames rising from these burning pyres remind the
insignificance of all temporal earthly pleasures and enable us to reevaluate life and search for its
meaning and happiness.

According to the Pauran, Ganga was a goddess residing in Heaven, who came down to Earth in the form of
river to provide the salvation to the seven generations of ancestors of King Bhagirath(ancestors of Lord
Rama). Not only did Ganga come to save King Bhagiraths ancestors, but she also was sent to Earth as a
means of purification for the entire population of human beings.
