Course Description This course tackles the day-to-day activity of thinking things through
which leads to logical conclusions, or to a logical evaluation of
claims that people make to influence our thinking and beliefs, or
courses of action. A core element of this course deals with the
recognition, analysis, evaluation, and formulation of arguments,
which are taken up with the purpose of improving ones reasoning
skills and enhancing effective thinking.
Learning Outcomes At the end of this course, the students are expected to have acquired
the following skills:
disciplined thinking
making judgments, i.e., those that require careful reasoning
grasping the point of an interlocutor
detecting whether an interlocutors argument is sufficiently
supported by evidence, or not
generating reasons for ones claim on specific issues
deciding what information is worthy of acceptance or belief
