Nurses voices are urgently
needed to achieve SDGs
The International Council of Nurses (ICN)
has selected Nurses: A Voice to Lead, Achiev-
ing the Sustainable Development Goals as the
theme for International Nurses Day (IND)
on 12 May 2017. The United Nations Sus-
tainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an
opportunity for nurses to demonstrate how
their actions make a difference and how they
help shape decision-making processes and
healthcare policies.
Nurses ability to effect change is equally
as important as the technical ability to deliver
safe and effective care. Policy development is
a practical tool for change, and participation
in policy making is a logical extension and
expression of the nursing professions care
and compassion.
Never has there been a time when the
voices of nurses are more urgently needed
at high levels of policy formation and
decision-making than they are now, said Dr
Judith Shamian, ICN President. To ensure
the achievement of the SDGs and make health
a reality for billions of people across the
globe, we need confident, well-informed
nursing leaders who understand their critical
role and contribution.
This years IND campaign is designed to
increase nurses understanding of the SDGs
and their significance, and how millions of
nurses around the world are already contribut-
ing to achievement of these global goals. ICN
aims to encourage nurses to lead, to inspire
others to take on the SDGs challenge, to
inform colleagues, governments and the public
about how to leverage nursing knowledge, and
to celebrate the work that nurses do every day
to advance global health agendas.

should care, what nurses around the world

further action. ICN urges nurses to order

Celebrated around the world on the anniver-
sary of Florence Nightingales birth, Interna-
tional Nurses Day is an excellent opportunity
for nurses and their associations to inform and
remind the public and policy makers about
how they influence their surroundings and
communities to create a healthier world.
ICN announces its new vision
The mission of the International Council of
Nurses (ICN) is to represent nursing world-
wide, advance the profession and influence
health policy, according to a new vision
statement approved by its Board of Directors
in December 2016.
This is an exciting time for ICN. We are
putting in place many new priority areas of
work and changing the way we do things to
better meet the needs of our members and the
profession, as well as to meet the challenges of
today, said Dr Frances Hughes, ICN Chief
Executive Officer. We are proud of our long
history but we must also look to the future.
Today, it is essential for ICN to play an
even greater role in representing nurses at the
highest policy levels to influence health,
social and economic policy. The safety of
patients and nurses in all settings is of para-
mount importance to our work. Our new
vision is of a world in which every person
lives and works in a safe, healthy and sustain-
able environment.
Founded in 1899, ICN was the worlds
first professional womens organization and
is now the worlds premier and widest reach-
ing international organization for health pro-
fessionals. As the recognized global voice of
nurses, ICN works to ensure quality nursing
care for all, sound health policies worldwide,
the advancement of nursing knowledge, the
presence worldwide of a respected nursing
profession and a competent and satisfied
nursing workforce.
The launch of a new vision reflects ICNs
increasing influence on the development and
implementation of global health policies,
including recommendations of the United
Nations High-Level Commission on Health
Employment and Economic Growth, the
World Health Organizations Global Strategy
on Human Resources for Health, and the
achieve- ment of the Sustainable Development
Goals.
