Internal Test I (27.09.2017, FN)
Answer all the questions and dont mix-up Part-A with other answers.
Only non-programmable calculator is allowed
Part A (Marks: 2 x 5 = 10)
1. Draw the picture of the rocket and show its main airframe components.
2. As per the slender body concept, what is the main body contribution in rocket lift generation.
3. Write the drag equation for a rocket in the subsonic and supersonic regime in the terms of Mach
number.
4. Define sounding rocket.
5. Define stability derivatives.
Part B (Marks: 16 x 2 = 32) M Mo BT
6 (a) (i) List down the different types of drags and describe them. Also write their (4) 2 1
expressions if applicable.
(ii) A rocket with the lengths of sharp nose body, main body and after body (12) 2 3
equal to 1m, 5m and 0.5m respectively; is operating at the Mach number
10. Nose body and after body have the same surface slope and fins are in
the shape of double diamond airfoil of the half wedge angle equal to 30.
If the angle of attack is 100 then find the normal force coefficient for the
entire airframe. Diameter of the main body is 0.5m, and the wing span
length on both sides from body surface is 0.5m. Also, the chord length of
the wings in cruciform design is 1m with no taper in the plan form.
Take = . , = . , and rocket is flying at sea level condition.
Ignore the interference.
(OR)
(b) (i) Explain the importance of specific impulse and mass flow rate in the (4) 1 1
rocket design.
(ii) In the boy, boat and stone experiment, mass of the boy and boat are 60 kg (12) 3 4
and 280 kg respectively. On the boat, there are three stones which are
thrown one after another, are weighing 60 kg, 85 kg and 108 kg
respectively. Find the gain in velocity of the boat with its remaining
weights after each throwing of the stone. All the stones are being thrown
with the same velocity of 85 m/s.
7 (a) (i) Write all the criteria based upon which missiles are classified under (10) 2 2
various categories. Also describe the various classes of missiles based

upon guidance systems by giving brief idea about each of the seven
guidance systems.
(ii) For the rocket flying as described in question no. 6 (a) (ii), estimate the (6) 2 3
wave drag acting on the nose as well as on the wing.
(OR)
(b) (i) Explain the difference between equilibrium and stability. Define static (8) 2 2
and dynamic stabilities and also explain why static stability is the
essential condition for the existence of dynamic stability. Use the graph-
plots to support your answer.
(ii) Discuss in details the tactical and strategic missiles. Also give their (8) 2 2
important features with examples.
Part C (Marks: 8 x 1 = 8)
8 (a) Draw a neat sketch of pyrogen type igniter and explain its working by (8) 1 2
giving sequential operation of its parts.
(OR)
(b) By using typical plot, explain the three phases in the ignition pressure (8) 1 2
transient.
