Medical Emergency Procedures

The Center Manager will be responsible for leading and ensuring that the procedures are followed. In
the event that the Center Manager is absent, the Assistant Manager will assume responsibility for
supervising the program and emergency procedures.

Emergency Medical Care:

1. Check for severe bleeding or respiratory distress, and take whatever lifesaving
measures are necessary. CPR will be initiated if the person is not breathing and
there is no pulse unless a physicians order for no CPR is in place. Call Health Care
Coordinator for help.

2. Obtain emergency transportation:

a. Call 911.
b. Make a copy of the participant's "Physician Agreement" and the Emergency Card
to give to paramedics.
c. Provide paramedics with a copy of the Advanced Care Directives or POLST.
d. Send the participant to the hospital designated on the Emergency Card.

3. Call the caregiver or other contact persons and have them meet the participant at
the hospital. If the contact persons cannot be reached or are unable to meet the
participant at the hospital, a staff member will escort the participant if possible.

4. The person observing the incident must fill out an "Incident Report". The Center
Manager will be responsible for notifying the Dept. of Human Services and follow
the Vulnerable Adults Procedure if the incident involves suspected abuse or neglect.

Other Conditions Requiring Medical Attention:

1. Administer required first aid.

2. If possible, keep the participant lying down, maintaining normal body temperature.

3. A staff member must stay with the participant at all times to monitor the condition of the person.

4. The Person-in-Charge should call the caregiver or other contact numbers. If the caregiver or other
contact persons are unavailable and immediate medical care is required, call the participant's
usual source of medical care for consultation.

5. Another staff member should continue trying to reach the caregiver or other contact; call the
medical facility to expect the participant if necessary.

and request an assessment.

2. Assign one staff member to monitor every 15 minutes or remain with if necessary.

3. Call the caregiver or other contacts. Ask them to pick up the participant or help them to arrange
a possible ride home.

4. Keep the participant isolated and send home immediately or suggest medical attention at clinic
or Emergency Department if any of the following signs/symptoms are present.

a. Suspected signs of a communicable illness are present.

b. Continued nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
c. Constant cough or difficulty breathing, complaints of sore throat or chest discomfort.

f. Fever.
g. For symptoms other than those listed above, consult the supervising director, alert the
caregiver, and consult the participant's physician for advice, if necessary.

5. Re-admit the participant when asymptomatic, upon request from the caregiver or upon receipt
of authorization from physician.
