Disaster Preparedness Plan for Earthquakes

Science and Geography behind Earthquakes

When it comes to earthquakes they can happen at any time. The reason an earthquake

happens is because two parts in the earth slip past each other and cause harsh movement in the

ground. The area where the earth slipped is a Fault. Many earthquakes dont just come in one

single wave or shock Many times we will experience one large earth quake also known as the

mainshock and it will be followed by an aftershock or several aftershocks.

Earthquakes come in many different Magnitudes and they happen every day all around

us. Many are so small that most people dont even notice them until they find out about it on the

news and realize that they were in that exact area where it was and just couldnt feel it. In Utah

we have earthquakes quite frequently around us. Earthquakes are studied by a Seismograph. It

records the movement in the ground.

There was a good-sized earthquake that happened two weeks ago in Park City that

someone I knew was working in a building when it happened and had no idea what to do. They

had never felt one before and at first were confused as to what was going on and how they

should react to it. I think that everyone should have a plan in place and know what to do in case

they are ever caught in an earthquake.

Primary and secondary effects of earthquakes

The primary effects are what happens during the earthquakes buildings collapsing, roads

cracking, highways falling, and many other things Secondary effects are fires that happened

because of the earthquakes, more things collapsing in because of other people trying to get out or

trying to pull people out of buildings.

How to prepare for earthquakes

Analyze what where and when. What is going on, where is it happening and when or when did it

happen. Practice Drop, Cover and Hold on show your kids what to do and do practice runs. Store

medical supplies or emergency bag. Know your location so you can get around safely. Get

medical supplies , water, food and try to have a whistle.
