Analysis of Radiohead 2+2=5

People admire the best dystopian novels because they are written well and people that

like showing or representing through a picture or drawing can relate to dystopian novels too. We

are fascinated by the terrible things the characters face, and by how some react bravely,

cowardly, or with resignation. Also people admire dystopian novels because, it gives us worst-

case scenarios of the future and just makes you think of ways our lives would be if our world

actually turned out that way. Radiohead 2+2=5 uses an extended metaphor that connects to

Brave New World exploring the ideas of individualism within a dystopian society.

In Radiohead 2+2=5 the extended metaphor shows how things in society are not

making sense and how things are not how they supposed to be. One thing the artist mentions is

January has April showers it is showing how it does not make sense because in January is does

not rain a lot that is called Paradox. Another Paradox he uses is 2+2=5 a metaphor for a self-

contradictory government. Than he also mentions Oh hail to the thief in other states there is a

saying for oh hail to the king/chief because you are supposed to respect the person that is in

charge and has all power but the artist says Oh hail to the thief and a thief is someone who

steals another person's property so that would not make sense because you should not be

respecting and giving your all to someone who has no good power or good representation.

In Brave New World the author Huxley shows a future in society where individual

sacrifices for the cause of state, science controls and all types of history, and the arts outlawed.

Huxley draws dystopia through emotional and political events. He brings a dystopian

setting by the mention of technology and higher authorities. One thing it talks about is the

Calvinist religious belief that God predestines individuals for heaven or hell before birth. Also

how eight-month-old babies wear the Delta castes khaki-colored clothes and nurses present the

babies with books and flowers, Then the babies crawl toward the books and the flowers, cooing

with pleasure, alarms ring shrilly and they suffer a mild electric shock and when the nurses offer

the flowers and books to the babies, they shrink away and wail with terror. The book shows how

the dark side of a successful world, where everyone looks satisfied with excessive pleasures of

technology and how they achieve by sacrificing their personal freedoms.

The artist Radiohead and the author from Brave New World are both trying to get

people to see the truth about the world. Radiohead makes a lot of repetition saying Paying

attention to show and let people know the point he is trying to make when he talks about the

world not being what it seems like because whenever he tries to blend in with others he cannot

do things the same because other things push him away and that Its the Devils way now, there

is no way out because nobody is doing nothing to stop what is wrong and fight for what is right.

Than in Brave New World the author argues that a free life requires suffering and pain. The

authors future describes a world without pain and a world without soul.
