Preface

Salvador General Hospital has assumed responsibility for the development of


training courses that are responsive to the standards for the delivery of Safe and Quality
care for the community it served.
Since these training courses are designed to provide national guidelines for
training, it is Salvador General Hospitals intention that they be of the highest quality and
be maintained in a current and up-to date status from the point of view of both technical
content and instructional strategy.

Course Goals

This training course guide has been designed and developed to assist the course
coordinator, instructors, and others in planning, managing and teaching the Emergency
Medical Transport Services-Basic: National Standard Curriculum. The goals and
objectives of this curriculum are to improve the quality of emergency medical care.

COURSE NAME: STANDARD FIRST AID
TRAINING HOURS: 8 HOURS

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course has been designed to train the general public to a basic
standard of first aid, to impart a wide spectrum of knowledge spanning the basic principles of
immediate action to be taken in emergency situations, and consolidating such knowledge through
the discussion and hands-on practice of numerous common scenarios.

TARGET PARTICIPANTS: This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of
physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, pharmacists and dentists
involved in the care of patients who require knowledge on standard first aid.

TEACHING MATERIALS:
PowerPoint Presentation on Standard First Aid
Lectures, questioning, observation aided by means of images, simulations and hands-on
practices.

Educational Objectives:
After successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:
Assess an emergency situation quickly and calmly.
Protect him/herself, bystanders and casualties from danger;
Assess the condition of all casualties and identify the need of immediate care;
Administer appropriate care for life threatening injuries relative to consciousness,
airway, breathing and circulation;
Deal with other major conditions mainly bleeding, shock and other emergency
situations.
Obtain medical aid and call an ambulance when necessary.

COURSE OUTLINE:
The learning outcomes of this course are to enable the participants to:

First Aid:
1. Know the basics of first aid, including:
a. Rescuer duties
b. Victim and rescuer safety
c. Phoning for help
d. Finding the problem
e. After the emergency
2. List the first aid steps for medical emergencies, including:
a. Breathing problems
b. Choking
c. Allergic reactions
d. Heart attack
e. Fainting
f. Diabetes and low blood sugar
g. Stroke
h. Seizures
i. Shock
3. List the first aid steps for injury emergencies, including:
a. Bleeding
b. Wounds
c. Head, neck, and spine injuries
d. Broken bones and sprains
e. Burns and electrical injuries
4. List the first aid steps for environmental emergencies, including:
a. Bites and stings
b. Temperature-related emergencies
c. Poison emergencies
5. Demonstrate knowledge on First Aid:
a. Proper use of Personal Protective Equipments.
b. Proper technique on application of bandage and splints
c. How to stop bleeding.
d. Application of wound dressing.

COURSE NAME: BASIC LIFE SUPPORT
TRAINING HOURS: 8 HOURS

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Basic Life Support (BLS) is the foundation for saving lives after
cardiac arrest. It is designed for healthcare providers and trained first responders who provide
care to patients in a wide variety of settings, and teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life
support skills for application in pre-hospital and in-facility settings.

TARGET PARTICIPANTS: The Heart & Stroke BLS course is designed for healthcare
professionals and trained first responders who provide care to patients in a wide variety of both
in-facility and prehospital settings or by those that require BLS certification and CPR training to
enter into a healthcare-related training program

Educational Objectives:
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
Explain the change in emphasis from airway and ventilation to compressions and
perfusion.
Select the correct order of interventions for the victim of cardiopulmonary arrest.
List the steps required to safely operate an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Differentiate between adult and pediatric guidelines for CPR.
Describe how to apply the various pediatric first aid interventions.
Recognize the signs of someone needing CPR
Perform high-quality CPR for an adult

Demonstrate the appropriate use of an AED

The BLS course focuses on teaching the essential skills rescuers need to know to perform high-
quality CPR in a wide variety of settings.

Part I.
Importance of high-quality CPR and its impact on survival
Steps of the Chain of Survival
BLS concepts of the Chain of Survival
Recognizing signs of someone needing CPR
How to do high-quality CPR for an adult

Part II.
The importance of early use of an automated external defibrillator (AED)
The use of an AED
Perform high-quality CPR for a child
Perform high-quality CPR for an infant
Describe the importance of teams in multi-rescuer resuscitation
Perform as an effective team member during multi-rescuer CPR

Part III.
Rescue breathing.
Airway assistive devices.
Provide effective ventilations by using different barrier device
Describe the technique for relief of foreign-body airway obstruction for an adult or child

COURSE NAME: Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

TRAINING HOURS: TRAINING HOURS: Two- sessions/days (8 hours each session)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is a video-based, Instructor-led,
advanced course, builds on the foundation of basic life support (BLS) skills. It emphasizes the
importance of continuous, high-quality CPR and takes healthcare provider training to the next
level- highlighting the importance of high-performance team dynamics and communication,
systems of care, recognition and intervention of cardiopulmonary arrest, immediate post-cardiac
arrest, acute dysrhythmia, stroke, and acute coronary syndromes.

TARGET PARTICIPANTS:
The ACLS Course is designed for healthcare professionals who either direct or
participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies.
This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care, and critical
care units such as physicians, nurses, and paramedics, as well as others who need an ACLS
course completion card for job or other requirements.
It is highly recommended that only those who will use the skills of ACLS within their
scope of practice take the ACLS Course.

survival
The integration of effective basic life support (BLS) with ACLS interventions.

Course Outline and Design:

The course is designed to give students the opportunity to practice and demonstrate proficiency
in the following skills used in resuscitation:

Systematic approach
High-quality BLS
Airway management
Rhythm recognition
Defibrillation
Intravenous (IV)/intraosseous (IO) access (information only)
Use of medications

Reading and interpreting electrocardiograms (ECGs)- Be able to identifyon a monitor and


paper tracingrhythms associated with bradycardia, tachycardia with adequate perfusion,
tachycardia with poor perfusion, and pulseless arrest. These rhythms include but are not
limited to:
Normal sinus rhythm
Sinus bradycardia
Type I second-degree AV block
Type II second-degree AV block
Third-degree AV block
Sinus tachycardia
Supraventricular tachycardias
Ventricular tachycardia
Asystole
Ventricular fibrillation
Organized rhythm without a pulse

Demonstrate a basic understanding of the essential drugs used in:


Cardiac arrest
Bradycardia
Tachycardia with adequate perfusion
Tachycardia with poor perfusion
Immediate postcardiac arrest care
Cardioversion
Transcutaneous pacing
Team dynamics

Participants will practice the application of these and other skills in simulated cases and will
practice both Team Leader and team member roles.

COURSE NAME: Introduction to Emergency Medical Transport Services

TRAINING HOURS: TRAINING HOURS: Three- sessions/days (8 hours each session)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is the training foundation for all ambulance
personnel. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) courses are taught by paramedics and
emergency medical technicians who work in the emergency medicine field.

TARGET PARTICIPANTS:
This course is designed to instruct first-liner emergency medical practitioner to the level
of Emergency Medical Technician-Basic, formerly the EMTS-Ambulance, who serves as a vital
link in the chain of the health care team. It is recognized that the majority of prehospital
emergency medical care will be provided by the EMT-Basic.

Educational Objectives:

After successful completion of the program, the student will be capable of performing the
following functions at the minimum entry level:

Recognize the nature and seriousness of the patient's condition or extent of injuries to
assess requirements for emergency medical care;
Administer appropriate emergency medical care based on assessment findings of the
patient's condition;
Lift, move, position and otherwise handle the patient to minimize discomfort and prevent
further injury; and,
Perform safely and effectively the expectations of the job description.
