CHAPTER I

Introduction

A. Background of the Study

Schools are ideally placed where healthy lifestyle messages are delivered to student.

Health promoting schools preach of ensuring food and drink supplied by the school canteen is

consistent with, and supports the messages of the good and healthy lifestyle taught in class.

In Australia, National Healthy School Canteen (2013) reported that school canteen is an

obvious place to promote an enjoyment of healthy eating. For students who use the canteen

regularly, the food purchased makes a significant contribution to their total food intake and

nutrition. Therefore, it makes sense to ensure the best food possible is available to enhance their

ability to learn and take in the information presented to them.

Other findings from the National Childrens Nutrition and Physical Activity

Survey (2007) revealed that, overall, children were not consuming the recommended amount of

fruit, vegetables or calcium. A third of a childs daily energy intake occurs during school hours

and a significant proportion of the fruit and calcium the children did consume was during school

hours. Interestingly, only 17% of total vegetable intake was during school hours, suggesting an

opportunity to increase promotion and thereby consumption of vegetables during this time.

Nowadays, school canteens are still selling soft drinks, iced teas and sports waters despite

sugary drinks being banned from public school tuck shops since 2007, while others are offering
cheap meal deals with fried food and cans of drink, prompting concerns that students' diets are

getting worse. Smith A. (2014). The departments of health and education need to get together

and do something about this because the voluntary code obviously isn't working,". Dr. Stanton

(2014).

In Manila, House Bill 3365 is seeking to impose a 10-percent increase in tax on soft

drinks and all sweetened beverage sold in bottle and other container. The author of the bill,

Suansing, claimed that the substances aspartame and caramel coloring found in soft drinks

and the high fructose corn syrup in sweetened beverages has harmful effects on health. It is

higher risks of Type II diabetes, higher caloric intake and body weight and decreases the calcium

in the body. This proposal can be implemented especially in school canteen to minimize the

students whos drinking the unhealthy beverages.

The department of Education had issued new rules for operation of school canteens. One

the rule is that DepED wants canteens in schools to be healthy both in the food they offer and in

their finances. And another is to encourage competition and improve the quality of service, the

order also allows schools with more than 500 students to have more than one canteen.

At first, the above reasons motivated the researchers to study how students will be

satisfied of the services offer by a school canteen. Second, the researchers observed that BSA

students can always be seen inside the canteen, maybe because some of the Presidential scholars

are taking Business and Accountancy courses. Therefore, students from the School of Business

and Accountancy of Colegio de Dagupan were chosen as the respondents of the study.
