WHAT SEPEP TEACHERS AND STUDENTS SAID ABOUT PUBLICITY a Publicity Officers stl ax. I think the concept is great but tt 's not reaching its full potential because of several office bearers. [Jeaches jounal, New South Wales} Information was put in daily notices. All scores were on the SEPEP notice board. Writing articles was diffcute for the year 7s (Ceecher journal, Austalian Capital Tetitory} ‘My journalists did a great job. | just absotutely loved reading their articles. Two of them wanted to be sports journalists. They were very funny and they put in everything about who did what and who threw the goals. They wrote it ina way that anyone would like fo read it. ’d print it up and it became a feature of each week (Teacher teleconference, South Austalla} tried having Publicity Officers but the students seemed to need a lot of guidance in that. (Teacher journal, Queensland) STENTS I didn’t use to like physical education much, but as a team member and Publicity Officer, [ found myself actually looking forward to it (Student journal, New South Wales) Twas busy this lesson in between games and during them, writing up results and pinning them up on the notice board. Because I'ma Publicity Officer, I do a lot of work (Student journal, Austallan Capital Tertory] Twas elected as a Publicity Officer and will enjoy the role. Lam very handy with computers and I will create a Touch database (Student journal, Austraian Capital Festtony) They don't seem to post many results or anything on the board yet. Some kind of interesting information would be good, like the draw perhaps. (Student journal, Australian Capital Lerritory] 1 don't think the Publicity Officers are doing their jobs properly. None of this group's results have been put up and so we are not able to see how other teams are doing (Student journal, Australian Capital Texitory] WHAT YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT ‘Atrough many postive results regarding he role ofthe Publ Ocer were vepote, ‘number of teachers perceived the area to be either not essentia! or an excessive work load for too few students, Where Publicity Officers were used effectively the role proved to be a significant contributor to the overall success of the season. Many teachers did not see the relevance of introducing, persisting with and promoting this aspect of SEPEP. Publicity Officers were at times not effective in disseminating information to the cless and beyond. Despite this, teachers felt that awareness of SEPEP moved beyond the confines of the E clas as 2 consequence of word-of-mouth communication Many students talked about ‘what was happening in SEPEP in other classes. Given this background, teachers will necessarily be cautious about the choice, Implementation and development of this tole The potential outcornes that emanete from the successful performance of this role are very povverful, including the achievement of hizhet level student outcomes and an improved image for PE tt appears that students need 10 be socialised/nurtured in this role 2s indéed they do for most of the roles that go beyond the player. A tole car for the Publicity Officer has been included in Module 3. Ihe fact that a separate Iodule has been dedicated to this role attests tots importance. Tes important to remember that a Key characteristic of SEPEP is that record keeping and the publication of results are tasks which are routinely undertaken. These functions are important to the integrity of SEPEP. and its evaluation as 2 curriculum model ITPE isto become developmentally appropriate for students as they progress through school it will be important for teachers to arrange dlifeting tole demands that will promote the achlevement of higher order learning outcomes. The Publicity Officer in yeat 10 must perform more advanced tasks than the Publicity Officer in year 8 SEPEP cannot guarentee that this wil happen; reflective and innovative teachers working with SEPEP can PUBLICITY GETTING STARTED AS A PUBLICITY OFFICER Paautcity ortcers can be nominated from the Sports Board, elected as members ofa Sports Board publicity subcommittee ot individuals may volunteer for the role Alternatively, one Publicity Officer can represent each team. As many as five students have been known to share the role The Keeping of records is an important characteristic of SEPEP and these records are publicised in various ways. While the role can be structured to enable students to complete various components, itis impottant that the Sports Boar and the teacher ‘monitor their work carefully. The Publicity Officer's role in the eaily part ofthe season is very important because a good start can motivate and enthuse other students The Publicity Officers need to meet with the teacher and the Sports Board in the first or second week to decide on the types of information that can be generated and ‘communicated during the season, The teacher and Sports Board should be responsible for guiding the Publicity Officers in theit choice of content and style of wilting. Showing sensitivity and faimness when ‘ititing about others is important to the inclusivity goals of SEPEP. The main tasks ar Fixtures for the season need to be posted as soon as they ate formulated Photos and names ofthe tears should be displayed Results of each round’s matches should be posted on the SEPEP notice board the same day ‘Match and/or taining reports should be completed on a weekly basis and may include short match summaries, highlights and game stasis ‘When 2 team of Publicity Officers ate appointed they can also assume the roles of record keepers of statisticians. These roles could of course be independent roles in themselves. ‘While the collection ofthese data, on a session by-session basis, wil typically be a duty team responsibilty, the Publiciy Officers must assume responsiblity for communicating this information tothe class, year level, school and the wider community as deemed necessary Publicity Oificers have an opportunity to integrate thei: work with other schocl subjects. ‘These opportunites need to be planed for by the teachers concerned. If oral and writen Engish assignments, at work, computer projects and social studies tasks are to be linked ‘ith SEPEP, PE teachers must work closely with the teachers from these other areas well in advance of the SEPEP season, ves EE rain As with ail other soles, young ot inexpetienced SEPEP students should stat simply, izadually becoming more sophisticated in the kindof ecords kept and publicised This vite feature of SEPEP requites the development of easy-to use forms for students to Keep records diring the season While teachers could assume this responsibility, many student: developed record fous have been used in SEPEP and ate included throughout this manual as examples. Teachers, in conjunction with the Sports Boatd, need to ensure students are reliable in theit record keeping Remember that teaches’ assessment of students’ performance in the SEPEP season should include the degree to which they successfully full thei roles Performance of the toe ofa Publicity Ofer allows students to demonstrate higher order learning outcomes VAYS/IDEAS TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY Anotice board must be made available for publicising al information regarding SEPEP. All publicity matetial should be of a high quelity as this will contaibute tothe overall image created by the SEPEP progam. Communication stateges might include: © Obtaining posters ofthe sport chosen ftom the sporting association © Taking photographs of the teams in preseason training and posting early. This greatly helps team. affiation © Cutting and displaying photos and aiticles about the sport chosen fiom local newspapers ot sporting magazines ‘Making sure school newsleters nave e SEPEP section which can include photos, interviews, etc Integating work with other curriculum areas. English assignments (otal and waltten), art work, media, social studies ae all possibilities Publicising all matches in advance. Inchide names of veferees and scorers, Publicising results ofall games as soon as they have finished Interviewing selected students during the season, Remember to include referees, fst aiders and ‘aibunal members as well as players. An interview with the selection committee eaily in the season about their ctitetia for selecting evenly matched teams isa good topic first off Listening to students talking about the season outside of PE class time isa good source of materi for stonles Featuring the Sport Development Officer fot the chosen sport ot a parent/comrunity member ‘who is involved in the sport © Contacting the local community radio station ot newspaper to feature the season © Atempting alive broadcast of one of the games © Creating some humorous articles with accompanying cartoons to highight a special happening, These strategies should assist the Publicity Officer to establish integrated and cross-cutticulat activities luting the SEPEP season, SEPEP teachers have told us tat the profile of PE and the teaching of spot in PE has been gpeatly enhanced when other teachers and adiministtators see ot heat SEPEP publicty Then they can recognise the cognitive and social benefits of SEPEP.
