MANAGERIAL EFFECTIVENESS OF SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS

AS PERCEIVED BY THE EMPLOYEES

ABSTRACT

La Salle University (LSU), formerly known as Immaculate Conception College-La Salle, is a


member school of De La Salle Philippines located in Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental, Philippines. The
managerial effectiveness of the school administrators of the said school is the main focus of the study.
This study primarily sought at finding out the 45 La University female staffs perception on the
managerial effectiveness of school administrators as measured using a 12-item survey questionnaire
presenting the indicators of managerial effectiveness that was adapted. The descriptive method of
research was used. To ensure validity of the analysis of the study, weighted mean was used as a statistical
tool. For analytical purposes, the researchers grouped the indicators (Planning, Efficient Use of
Resources, etc.) from the questionnaire in order to specify the strengths and weaknesses of the
management and to be able to construct more specific findings.
The results showed that the researchers conclude that the managerial effectiveness of school
administrators are slightly effective, in equivalent to the extent that the employees agree. The strength of
the school administration lies in the planning and setting of goals and has to work more in addressing job
and non-job related issues. Thus, school administrators need to improve more for the betterment of the
school.

INTRODUCTION

Managerial effectiveness plays a great role in the organization. It is the one of the key
aspects in an organization that is to be developed. Through it, productivity and coordination of
employees will then develop. An effective manager performs activities efficiently and
effectively. This means doing things right and doing the right thing.

In La Salle University, The schools administration is important in such a way that it


sustains the organization. Since that it is an educational institution, it needs close and tight
supervision. The administrative structure of the organization is complex, it is composed of the
Board of Trustees, President, Vice Chancellors, Deans, Program Heads, Coordinators, and
Directors of the different departments. The management is responsible for ensuring the
development, performance, and conduct of each employee working in the organizations they
direct, managing the activities of employees, maintaining safe working conditions, setting up of
policies, and many more.

The success and achievements of the institution is dependent on the well-implementation


of long-range plans, good internal control, and harmonious relationship of the people which in
fact are some of the functions of management. The study focuses on the managerial effectiveness
of the female staff on the said organization. The effectiveness of the management can be
evaluated on as to the perception of the employees. With that, the researchers seek to know the
effectiveness of the school administrators and be able to formulate possible ways in order to help
in developing the performance of school administrators.

RATIONALE OF THE STUDY

The effectiveness of the management will be a great contribution in achieving the goals
and objectives of the institution. The management plays a big role, from planning and delegation
to communication and motivation. But then, it must be put into consideration that it is not
enough to just perform the work, it must be done effectively and efficiently. The six most
common managerial success traits include communication, leadership, adaptability,
relationships, development of others, and personal development.

It might be disappointing to note that at times, in certain organizations, employees tend to


do the job only for compliance or even if they do work against their will because of poor
management. Employees are demotivated and not directed and acquainted well on the outcomes
of their work. In relation to that, the researchers find the importance of management
effectiveness in relation to aim for the betterment of administration in La Salle University. The
objective of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of administration and formulate
solutions to certain management weaknesses.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aims to find the perception of the employees of La Salle University about the
managerial effectiveness of school administrators. The study sought to answer the following
questions:

1. Is the management of the school effective in terms of :


A. Planning/Goal Setting;
B. Efficient use of resources;
C. Formulation and implementation of policies and rules;
D. Addressing of job and non-job related issues;
E. Employee Relations/Motivation;
METHOD

RESEARCH DESIGN

The research utilized the descriptive research method since study involved description,
recording, analysis, and interpretation of conditions that exist. With the aid of Qualitative Scale
of Measurement, the researchers would be able to be able to quantify on as to what extent the
participants agree to the given statements in the survey questionnaire. The researchers surveyed
the whole population of female staff of La Salle University-Ozamiz City.

RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT

This research was conducted in La Salle University-Ozamiz City premises, in the main
campus and in the heritage campus.

PARTICIPANTS

The participants of the study are the 45 female staff of La Salle University- Ozamiz City
both working in the main campus and in heritage campus (Birthing clinic, Nursing Office).

INSTRUMENTS USED

The study used a survey questionnaire to determine the effectiveness of school


administrators as perceived by the female staff. The indicators of effective management of
school administrators as perceived by the female staff were presented by employing a 12-item
test. He participants were asked to rate based on a four-point (4-Agree, 3-Satisfactorily Agree, 2-
Slightly Agree, 1-Disagree) scale.

As to the mean score, below are the verbal interpretations.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

The researchers were able to obtain the information needed to continue this study. The
weighted mean was utilized for analyzing the data that was gathered. For in-depth treatment of
data, Frequency Distribution was used to emphasize the variations of data gathered.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA


For analytical purposes, the researchers grouped the indicators (Planning, Efficient Use
of Resources, etc.) from the questionnaire in order to specify the strengths and weaknesses of the
management and to be able to construct more specific findings.

As reflected in the table above, the management is very effective in relation to planning ahead to
complete assignments, in relation to the extent the employees agreed to the statement. It can be noted that
among all, no. 1 obtained the highest mean which in fact would then be considered as the strength of the
school administrators.

As illustrated above, employees do believe that the administrators were able to take control on
the usage of resources in doing activities or jobs, they have proper budgeting, and proper
allocation of resources to perform the work efficiently.

As reflected in Table 3, though still it has a verbal interpretation of Satisfactorily Agree,


the management got a low rating on this in relation to others. This means that the rules and
policies may not be so clear that it may cause other employees to doubt about it when time
comes that it becomes questionable. Thus, it follows that if the policies are not clear enough, it
will not be consistently applied.

The table above signifies that the administrators need to formulate ways and develop attitude of
addressing job and non-job related issues. With that figures, it could be concluded that it is the weakness
of the administrators.

As shown in the illustration above, the ratings are not so high compared to the no. 1
indicators rating. It indicates that the manager-employee relationship should be developed. As to
the lowest rating, it is about the receptivity of the management to employee ideas. With that, the
management is more on autocratic style than being on a participative style of leadership. Thus, it
then affect the motivation level of employees.

As to the totally of the indicators, the weighted mean is 3.02 Satisfactorily Agree. This indicates
that the managerial effectiveness of the school administrators are moderate. With regards to the lowest
rating, it is on the addressing of job and non-job related issues. The management needs to develop in
handling the issues in the workplace to create establish a peaceful and harmonious working environment
and at the same time a good reputation.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS


FINDINGS
From the data obtained, the following are the findings:
1. Among the sub classifications of the indicators, the school administrators need to develop more
on addressing job and non-job related issues having a weighted mean of 2.81.
2. The administrators are doing well on planning/ goal setting.
3. Managerial effectiveness of school administrators are slightly effective.

CONCLUSION
As perceived by the 45 female staff of La Salle University, the researchers conclude that the
managerial effectiveness of school administrators are slightly effective. The strength of the school
administration lies in the planning and setting of goals and has to work more in addressing job and non-
job related issues. Thus, school administrators need to improve more for the betterment of the school.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the findings and conclusions made, the following are the recommendations:
(1) The administrators are doing well in the planning and setting of goals, and so, it must develop in
the implementation and evaluation process to get better results.
(2) The administrators should give chance to the employees to share their ideas. By that, employees
will be motivated and manager-employee relationship will improve.
(3) Addressing of job and non-job related activities should also be done. It improves the morale of
employees and organizes the working environment. These issues must be resolved for the easier
attainment of goals.
(4) The administrators should be stricter in implementing the rules and regulations by establishing
control. The secret of the success of an organization is the well-implementation of goals including
the rules.
