But before well proceed to

our poem for today I
want us to have a game.
I want the class to be
divided into two. I have 3
words in a box and all
you have to do is to look
for the meaning of the
word below the box.
Coveted., yes Group 1
yearn to possess or have
(something).

Very Good!

Next word, sepulchre

angelic being, regarded in
traditional Christian angelology
as belonging to the highest order
of the nine fold celestial
hierarchy, associated with light,
ardor, and purity

Excellent!

And for the last

one,seraphs Yes, Group
2?
-a small room or monument, cut
in rock or built of stone, in which
a dead person is laid or buried

You guys are all good!

So, I guess, youll surely

understand the story now
that we have already
unlocked some
unfamiliar words, right?
Yes!

Kindly read, Mr. Marquez?
Edgar Allan Poe, (born January 19,
1809, Boston, Massachusetts,
U.S.died October 7,
1849, Baltimore, Maryland),
American short-story writer, poet,
critic, and editor who is famous for
his cultivation of mystery and
the macabre. His tale The Murders
in the Rue Morgue (1841) initiated
the modern detective story, and the
atmosphere in his tales of horror is
unrivaled in American fiction.
His The Raven (1845) numbers
among the best-known poems in
the national literature.

Yes. And our story for today

is one of his famous works.

1.3. Making Connections

But before going on with the

story, I have this question for
all of you.

Have you ever loved

someone?
Yes!

Did he/she stay?

Yes!

How about this?

Are you ready to face the time

when you have to tell her/him
goodbye? What will you do if
you see her/him being laid on
the floor wearing white dress
and her eyes being closed?
Yes, Ms. Del Mundo

Im not yet ready sir to be on that

situation for it sounds to be so
painful.

Thank you Ms. Del Mundo.

For sure, it would really be
painful.

Let us now proceed to our

Poem which is might help us
answer all of those questions.
It is entitled Annabel Lee
2. Reading
This time let us the read the
poem.

Annabel Lee
It was many and many a
year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived
whom you may know
By the name of Annabel
Lee;
And this maiden she lived
with no other thought
Than to love and be
loved by me.

I was a child and she was a

child,
In this kingdom by the
sea,
But we loved with a love
that was more than
love
I and my Annabel Lee
With a love that the wingd
seraphs of Heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason

that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the
sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud,
chilling
My beautiful Annabel
Lee;
So that her highborn
kinsmen came
And bore her away from
me,
To shut her up in a
sepulchre
In this kingdom by the
sea.

The angels, not half so

happy in Heaven,
Went envying her and
me
Yes!that was the reason
(as all men know,
In this kingdom by the
sea)
That the wind came out of
the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my
Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger

by far than the love
Of those who were older
than we
Of many far wiser than
we
And neither the angels in
Heaven above
Nor the demons down
under the sea
Can ever dissever my soul
from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel
Lee;

For the moon never

beams, without bringing
me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel
Lee;
And the stars never rise,
but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel
Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I
lie down by the side
Of my darlingmy
darlingmy life and my
bride,
In her sepulchre there by
the sea

In her tomb by the

sounding sea.

3. Post-Reading
Did you guys enjoy the story?
Yes!

So what can you say about it?

Erwin
Its a very tragic story and a cruel
one especially for the girls fate.

Yes, thats right.

Any other answer? Yes, Ms.

Peru.
The people of that town are
somehow insensitive over the part
of the poor girl.

This piece is really a story of true

love. A love that was really
fought for behind all odds. It
really talks about 2 persons
who are very in love with each
other. The truth is that Annabel
Lee who in real life is really
named Virginia Clemm, who is
Edgar Allan Poes wife, who is
his 1st cousin. Thats why their
love has been forbidden. Also in
the line So that her highborn
kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
we can say that the Annabel
Lee was taken away from the
narrator, so the kinsmaen could
be interpreted as a
disapproving society which
Alabang-Zapote Road, Pamplona 3, Las Pias City, Metro Manila 1740, PHILIPPINES

does not accept the love that

the narrator and Annabel has.
Aside from the fact that they
were cousins. Poe also married
Clemm when the girl was just
13 and Poe was already 26.
And another thing is that, when
Annabel Lee died he was not
able to visit on her funeral and
was banned by her family to
attend it. But according to the
poem no one can separate from
the love that they have.
Something so painful right?

Yes sir.
This time I have here words coming
from the poem: May I ask you to read
Ms. Lecos
And neither the angels in Heaven
above
Nor the demons down under the
sea
Thank you Ms. Lecos, another Mr.
Torres
she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by
me.

What have you observed with those

words Mr. Marquez?
Those words are somehow hard to
understand and I think it doesnt
mean literally.
So what do you mean with those
statements that doesnt literally mean?
It is figures of speech.
Very Good, our topic for today is all
about Figures of Speech.
Alabang-Zapote Road, Pamplona 3, Las Pias City, Metro Manila 1740, PHILIPPINES

Very good, so do you have any idea

what figures of speech is? Mr. Yuson
Sir figures of speech are words or
statements that the writers used to
make their work more creative.

5 figures of speech which are:
-Personification
-Hyperbole
-Alliteration
-Repetition; and
-Metaphor

The flowers nodded
Thank you, next. Kindly read what
hyperbole means Ms. Martinez.

uses exaggeration for

emphasis or effect.

Kindly give examples Ms. Lintag

Ive told you a hundred
times.
It cost a billion dollars.
I could do this forever.
She is older than dirt.
Very Good, Kindly read what
Alliteration mean.

neighboring words.
Kindly read the examples Mr. Marquez

Next, what does Metaphor mean?

It compares two unlike
things or ideas.
Very Good, kindly read the examples
Ms. Dumlao.
Heart of stone
Time is money
The world is a
stage
She is a night owl
He is an ogre
Thank you Ms. Dumlao., Finally kindly
read the meaning and example of
Repetition.
is when words or
phrases are repeated in
a literary work.
For example:
"My conscience hath a
thousand several tongues,
And every tongue brings in a
several tale,
And every tale condemns me
for a villain."
--Shakespeare, Richard III
Very Good Class, have you understood
