Assignment # 1

1) Discuss the properties (Linearity, Causality Time-Invariance) of the following

systems:
a) y(t) = 5 x (t-1) + 2 x(t-3) b) y(t) = 3 x2 (t-2) +3 x(t+2)
c ) y(t) = 3x (t-1)-3 x (t-2) d) T(x(t)) = 7(x(t-1))2
e) T(x(t) = t2 x(t+2) f ) y(t) = t x(t)
g) y(t) = 15x(t-1) + 10x(t-2)

2) Considers a system S with input x(t) and output y(t). This system is obtained through a
series interconnection of a system S1 followed by a system S1. The input-output
relationships for S1 and S2 are
S1 : y1(t) = 2x1(t) + 4x1(t-1)
S2 : y2(t) = x2(t-2) + x2(t-3)
Where x1(t) and x2 (t) denote input signals.

a) Determine the input output relationship for system S.

b) Does the input-output relationship of system S change if the order in which S1, and S2
are connected in series is reversed (i.e., if S2 follows S1) ?

3) Consider a discrete-time with input x(t) and output y(t). The input-output relationship
for this systems is

y(t) = x(t) x(t-2)

Determine the output of the system when the input is A (t), where A is any real
or complex number.

4) Consider the signal x(t) shown in Fig.1, illustrate the following :

a) Advance shift x(t +1) b) Delay x(t-1)
c) Timereversal x(-t ) d) Time Reversal and shift x(-t +1)
e) TimeScaling x(3/2t) f) TimeScaling and shift x (3/2 t + 1)
1 x(t)
1 2 t

6)The impulse response g(t) and the excitation x(t) for a certain CTLTI
system are shown in figure 3. Find the output y(t) by using the convolution
integral.

Figure 3.
7)The impulse response of a certain system is given by :
g(t)=0 for t<0
-2t
=e for t0
By means of convolution integral, determine the response y(t) due to the
ramp input:
x(t)=0 for t<0
=4t for t0
