ALPHABETICAL LIST OF GENERA

The genera mentioned in the keys are listed alphabetically with the addition of the family
name in brackets and also, where possible, a reference to a publication containing keys to
species; Catalogue stands for the Hopkins & Rothschild Catalogue of the Rothschild
collection of Fleas (1953-1971). Distribution and host data are summarily given, followed by
an enumeration of diseases and the fleas which, in the countries added, have been found to
be naturally infected with the pathogens. The number of deribed species indicates the
size of the genus (or subgenus); quite a number of flea species are divided into subspecies
(geographical races) and the collective word forms is used for the totals of species and
subspecies.

Distribution: South America; 2 subgenera: nominate subgenus with 3 species (5 forms),
subgenus Tritopsylla with 2 species (4 forms).
Hosts: Didelphine marsupials.

Distribution: Temperate and cold zones of Eurasia and North America; 5 species (14
forms).
Hosts: Microtine rodents.

Distribution: Eastern Asia and north-western North America; 3 species (4 forms).
Hosts: Picas (Ochotona spp.).

Vector: Erysipeloid: A. runatus runatus (Jordan & Rothschild), Asiatic Russia.

Amphipsylla (Leptopsyllidae) [vide Catalogue V].

Distribution: Mainly in colder regions of Eurasia but a few forms also in western North
America; 28 species (39 forms).
Hosts: Murid rodents, especially microtines.
Vectors: Plague: A. rossica Wagner, European Russia; A. primaris mitis Jordan, Asiatic
Russia and Mongolia. Erysipeloid and Salmonellosis: A. primaris mitis Jordan, Asiatic
Russia.

Distribution: North America; 13 species (15 forms).
Hosts: Wood rats (Neotoma spp.).
Vectors: Plague: A. hiemalis ssp., Texas; A. nudatus (Baker), western U.S.A.

Distribution: Mainly in North America, a few species also in northern and eastern Eurasia;
13 species (15 forms).
